North Karana is the "nexus" of the Karana Plains. Despite the dangers of the roaming lions, wolves, bears, griffons, and occasional hill giant, this place is quite the player-friendly area: Here, you'll find a few guard watch towers for aid, a gypsy camp with vendors, and a druid ring and wizard spires for porting.

Speaking of guard watch towers, North Karana is home to what may be the most active guards in all of Norrath. The tower in the center of the zone is in the path of many a wandering animal and keeps its guards fighting off trouble on a steady basis. They win most of their battles, but occasionally lose, particularly when the opponent is an upper level hill giant, griffon, or GrimFeather.

It took me the same time to gather 20 HQ lion skins as to complete the hunter achievement. If you have ever hunted for HQ lion skins in NK this should give you an estimated time, give or take. I just killed all over zone. Grimtooth was the rarest spawn for me. I Did not see any spawn cycles or pattern, just slaughter everything.

I set myself up west of the gypsys at approx. location neg 600 x pos 800. For 3 days I killed anything that came close. I ended up spawning Ashenpaw 5 times, Callowwing 4 times, Korvik 2 times and Swiftclaw 4 times. None of the other 4 showed up. So I moved to location neg 2020 x neg 340 (because I saw 3 mobs clumped there). After 6 hours I got Lt Midrain and Grimtooth. I cannot find a specific ph, just mass kill and hope.

Edit - another 18 hours at that spot (neg 2020 x neg 340). Got Timbur the Tiny twice and 2 more Ashenpaws and another Korvik. Went back to original spot (neg 600 x pos 800) and got 4 more Ashenpaws, 3 more Korvik, 2 Callowwing. Still no Bristletoe. So I moved to neg 1500 x pos 2225 ( saw 3 mobs congregated there) and got Bristletoe in 30 minutes.

Any zone other than Guild Lobby (currently) that is connected to the Guild Hall, is a one way connection from the Guild Hall Portal to that zone. North Karana is one of many of those one-way connections (You can go to NK from GH, but you can't go to the GH from NK).

I've been running around NK for some time today looking for Griffons, Griffawns and Griffennes. I'm looking for feathers to drop for a brewing recipe, but it seems to me that ALL of the Griffs have gone extinct in this zone. I have yet to see a single one after searching every corner over at least 45mins.

I'm not sure this has been fixed or not. But there are also Griffons and Griffawns in West Karana, the next zone over.

Last I recall, the guards in the zone weren't attacking lions (even after they had fixed the same problem in the Commonlands). If that's still the case, the mob population will always be way out of balance.

Transport crystals
# Feb 14 2006 at 8:39 PM Rating: Decent
2 of my characters are unable to get the crystals to transport back to the Nexus from the spires. One attack a tree while in the Druid circle, the other was grouped with that one and did not disband before the tree was killed. I don't know if that had anything at all to do with it, but any help will be appreciated! I can't think of anything else that could have caused this, as they were both able to obtain the crystals before this happened and have not been able to since that time.

Has anyone noticed how fast the Forage skill goes up in this zone? gained about 10 lvls in 15 min. Maybe there is skill bonus here, or maybe it's just luck.

HQ lion!?
# Feb 22 2004 at 5:31 AM Rating: Decent
Hiya gang,

I hear HQ lion skins drop here but have yet to find one or even know of where they spawn. Any suggestions will help. Is there a place holder for these or is it a random spawn? If so, what is it and I'll just kill them all till I see it :)

Thx for the help!

if you are looking for HQ lion skins they only drop in this zone from highland lions. be prepared for a long time hunting and killing them, I have spent many hours there and i think i may have avg. about 1 HQ lion pelt every 4 or 5 hours if i am lucky.

Is there a soul binder here? Some of the guides say you can bind here, do they mean you can ask a player caster to bind you or is there a NPC soul binder?

While selling to gypsies, watch out for griffawns. They will attack you from behind while you are selling. I learned this the hard way and lost 1 1/2 hrs of KEI. Afterwards, the other druid I was hunting with said it had happened to him twice. I only wish he had warned me in advance.
The Lion, The Griff and the Willowisp
# Nov 03 2002 at 3:18 PM Rating: Excellent
This zone is one of my favourite of the Karana's, WK an SK are just too big and the all the mobs, except for the contested camps, are a mile apart and EK is just plain weird! I spent many an hour here, as a young ranger, searching for the very elusive HQ Lionskin I still need for my fleeting quiver, and let me tell you lions run away really too fast, even when snared. Second, the griffawns/enes/ons are actually classed as animals (weird but true) and so from lvl 22 onwards fear kiting is an option, just make sure you 'con' it first and stick to the blues as they hit really hard and if you can't get a snare to stick sooner rather than later you ded. But my favourite part of this zone was the trick that finally got me out of leather armour, back in the day, the wisp trick, or exploiting the dumb gypsie traders. The full quest can be found under 'The Concordance of Research' but here is the bit you want to know about. Kill wisps (buy some magic weapons and boots, blackened iron boots are prolly the cheapest and widely avilable), they drop 3 types of lightstone, destroy the burntout, sell the small and collect the Greater. When you have a load saved up go see the gypsies. Give the GLS to Mrysila and she will give you a book (counts as a container so have a spare bag slot or two) and a little experience (basically if you are in the xp range for killing the wisps (11 - 20ish) then the xp from the hand in will be meaningful. Then sell the book to any of the other gypsies and you will get 8-10pp! You would have thought that the gypsies would know! Arent they all sisters? Maybe they just don't talk to each other!?!

Happy Hunting!

before killing wisps just go to the gypsy camp and see if they have any in stock bought a nice amount 100 plat worth traded them for books made 200 plat so that's 100 plat profit and experience in less then 10 minutes

Greater lightstones are pretty common. I have made 100pp an hour doing this. Also, you don't have to sell the concordance to a different gypsy, the one who gave it to you works just fine.

Greater Lightstones drop about 1 in 10 kills. Lightstones are about twice as common. Burned Out Lightstones are most common.

You can make a lot of cash doing the GLS turn in to the gypsy.

My bard spent most of his upper teens in this zone. Now he wears a full suit of fine steel plate, ornate gold chain bracers, and carries some nice mid level weapons.

Druid Faction

Can anyone tell me what faction the Druids in this zone work off of? I assumed it was the same as Commonland Druids, but that just got me a second body on a brutal corpse run. Also, any camps or quests that will improve the faction would be much appreciated. I'm just an Innoruuk worshipping Dark Elf Warrior, why would they want to hurt little ole me?

mate dont waste your time there like i did i have a 24 shammy and spent days running arouond karanas at your level.Get yourself a boatride to firiona vie and run up the stream to lake of ill omen get to the mill and bind yourself there.the mobs may be a little high for you but a group will snap you up and the exp is awesome. hang around mill till about 20 then with a good group hit the fort or really anywhere in zone you are capable of getting good exp.Best method is to get a tank and partner you buff him and heal then med while he smacks **** out of everything.Hope i helped

The Mother Swarmer drops in a random pattern of a Rubt crown , diamond and a Blue diamond.I/m a lvl 40 druid and she conned Blue to me . pretty easy kill even with all her little beetle kids trying to bite me.. I believe its an 8 Hr spawn from the 3 kills I had. Not really sure on the spawn time , I was logged during parts of that time but i asked people in zone when I got back on , You will hear a farmer say "A swarm is coming" and She came all 3 times over the hill near the gypsy camp , Hope any of the info helps

If he says he is busy, then someone probably did something and he moved from his spot. Was there a corpse lying around?

I've not known him to close during the night, myself. Hail him. If he says something rude, then your factions are fipped and you need to do some faction questing. He is human by hte look of him, so probably surefall faction.

If its a matter of he is closed for business then, like I said, he has probably been moved or something. Petition a GM. If he's been moved, they can fix him. Or, they can probably figure out what is wrong with him.

Strange Happenings
# May 13 2001 at 6:08 AM Rating: Decent
These occurences are a GM Event that is happening in all the Karanas. This has to do with the Plaguebringer God and The Mother Swarm is a huge Beetle. She drops a ruby when killed along with something else. I have a screenshot of her up close and personal and i will post a link to the picture as soon as I can get it up. The swarms are very aggressive and when they attack, they do so about ten at a time. I have seen bandits and scarecrows in WK running from them. Another side effect to this is that the geography warps a bit and NPCs you have conned warmly to or better can all of a sudden attack you. I do believe it is a precursor, but to the Expansion coming in December. More to come later!
