I did this quest on Agnarr today due to a guide somewhere saying any pet class can use the clicky on the mage focus/quest items from Sol Ro... NOT true. At least not for my necromancer.
The stein, torch, broom and shovel are all pretty high priced it seems on baz on Agnarr... and beware the other "shovel" that is also for a quest. Vira doesn't like that one --easy to tell as it is a 2hb with dmg/dly.
3 steins, 1 torch and 1 shovel dropped in less than 2 hours in Najena for me today. Mostly killed in the first darkbone skelly room (sort of near Bonecracker) and Trazdon room. Only did 1 kill of a magican past the stalag rooms before entering the main jail area (in other words I didn't clear half the skelly/mage spawns that could drop the items). Did this as a level 29 necro which was mostly safe, though lots of add potential thanks to the wandering guards.

I spent a couple of hours killing Magicians in Najena but never saw any of the drops they are supposed to drop.. no "a shovel"

was in mistmoore with my pally and got jumped by several gargoyles and the eye dropped off one of them.

They changed Mistmoore to level 65+ so now you can get the Gargoyle Eyes from Lower Guk or Ocean of Tears. If you take the translocator to OOT then swim to the island with the dead trees you will see skeletons and spectres. Someone said to kill the skeletons because they were PH's for the Gargoyles. None spawned. So I started killing spectres and walah! There be Gargoyles!! I had to kill all the spectres 3 times before a gargoyle dropped Gargoyle Eyes :)

I am trying go finish my epic, I have done the rest od the turn ins for these focus items but got some reason I can't seem to get her to accept my turn in for the Shovel of Ponz. Is there a special kind of ruby? Cause I am just using a store bought one. Is it gargoyle eye? or eyes? cause I have ounly found the one gargoly eye. Hill giant toes are pretty common, and the shovel I got in nanjena, my faction is excelent. any ideas? I asked a GM if it bugged and he said no it is working fine.

Since the Mistmoore Revamp did they move these Gargoyles out into LFay like the gnolls in Karana? Or are they just gone and if so where are the gargoyles in OOT? The only time I've been there is to buy my pet spells and for my druid's epic.

This requires HILL giant toes, not ICE giant toes.

I did the quest today with my level 2 Mage (with a little help from my main). Well, unfortunately the shovel appears to now have a level requirement of 20.
I discovered this because the latest patch added a display of level requirements on focus and spell effects. So it appears that the focus effect working on level 4 mobs was all in our heads.

[Black]Tiplo does drop "a shovel" and it IS the same used inthe quest.. i know this because i killed tiplo a while ago and kept his shovel for fun. it was in my bank.. and i was camping the Fjboots while killing magicians.. i droped "a shovel" the ones used in this quest and it said i have this lore item already. so it must be identical. and tiplo does drop it. just kill him without the guards seeing[/Black]

There are only 2 places I know for sure that the shovels can be picked up in. Never heard of the Shadow Haven guy, but they DO drop off of Alligators in Feerrott, and off of Magicians in Najena. The Magicians can be Goblin or DE, doesn't matter. Both drop the items. And the highest there level is is 25. Alligators in Feerrott can be up to lvl 33. Both of these mobs also drop the Pages of Elemental Mastery for the Mage Epic, so while you are there camping them for the Items for these focus quests, keep your eye out for them as well, since you probably are not going to enjoy going back there when you're in your 40s or 50s
I've heard that the shovel can be looted off Magicians in Najena. I did hunt them for several hours. I Looted the Broom, Torch and Stein for the other three pet items but not the shovel. I did get one though. In Shadowhaven. Tiplo the Gardener. Killed him a few times ( friends did the quest as well ) and he dropped the shovel each time. Warning though, you do take a faction hit to SOME of the houses in SH, but not enough to be KOS. Also, don't be tricked by SOE's stupid things, i ended up doing the quest twice because I bought "Shovel" in the bazaar. The quest didn't work because it required "A Shovel" so make sure you have the right one before turning them it or you might lose all your things.

I've killed Tiplo the Gardener a few times now. Although he shows a shovel equipped, he has no loot what so ever once you kill him. I then took my ranger to Feerott and tried tracking An Alligator. My ranger is 60 with max tracking and it kept point him to the zone in of the CT zone. So either the gators are bugged and are underneath the temple zone fascade or they are only found inside the level 55+ dungeon.
Tracking sometimes gets bugged, but if they were inside the dungeon, they wouldn't show up on radar out in the Feerott.

Okay, this is supposed to be about a 33 lvl quest, yet the "A Shovel" its linked to is the one that drops of the dino's in chardok. They're all 42+. I'm assuming this is really the simple Shovel off the Magicians in Najena.
Think they could fix that link?

I did these at level 15-17 solo, not twink. secres is to nab'm before they can get there Pets. Had to have help starting in. just Followed some Higher levels till I got where I wanted

Just a word of warning to anyone like me. You look up the area in EQAtlas, and the highest level magi listed is lvl 20. At lvl 31 thought I would go there and have a boaring time.....ended up dying.

Yes it is Magic and Lore.
I want to call attention back to a post I made waaaaay back when I first finished my set of Focus items. I have gone through it and altered it to fit the current changes in the game and I want to point out that if you are a 45+ Mage it is absolutely essential that you get the Torch (for the Rak'Ashiir raids in CoM), Broom (used to get Epic), and Shovel (used to get Epic).

Hail her and follow the prompts till she tells you the four items she needs for the quest you are doing. Give her the four items all at once in the order she asks for them. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST INDIFFRENT TO HER. She will give you faction, Experience, and the item you were questing for. Good Luck !!!
* Gornit is a Giant on an island in OOT near Sister Island. Just go to sister island and do a shout asking if anyone is camping Gornit, if someone is, ask them if you can get one of each toe from them. Gornit is almost always camped and the people camping him will usually give you the toes for free.

Anyone know what lvl the shovel stops working at? is it 44 or 49? or does it work till ur 60? :)
The Torch, Broom, Stein, and Shovel work for all the pets up to level 49 after that you need the Staves of Elemental Mastery. After 50 as you get each pet start banking each the Focus item except the Torch. As I mentioned in another post the Torch will still be needed for a while because the 49 Fire pet is the best pet to use in fights with mobs like Rak'Ashiir.

I looted a shovel from a dark-boned skeleton in Najena and I was wondering if this shovel is the same shovel needed for this quest or is there a magician in Najena that drops this shovel?

Yes. The magicians, Rathyl, Rathyl Reincarnate, and dark-boned skellies drop the focus pieces.

i for one am surely surprised that since all these are "focus" items that are supposedly usefull even at low levels ( which i gather they are from a few other mage.pages) that Verant did not add the focus effect text to the actual casting. anyone who has gotten ahold of any of the items that have new focus effects (i.e. PPB affliction efficiency 2) has witnessed the message that spams us when we cast a spell that said focus applies to. I for one am just a bit perturbed that these foci do not give me a message when i cast the appropriat pet. of course i have had these foci since before the recent focus items addition and therefore understand that these might be classified as a different type of focus; however if anyone important reads this post im sure there are a lot of us that would like to see these foci adjusted to actually list their effect (for example shovel : hightened summoning earth) and possibly a recommended level. this would certainly solve the long lasting debate over the actual effects of these foci pre-lvl34.
otherwise im temped to believe that these are merely a commodity at lower levels.
