The Bayle List

This a long and involved quest, and can be started in a number of different places, but revolves around Qeynos, Surefall Glade, and Freeport. It ultimately results in a high-powered Shadow Knight weapon.
There are four parts to this quest: The first three involve the collection of Bayle Lists, and the fourth involves turning in those items. Part One See Commander Kane in the Shrine of Bertoxxulous of the Qeynos Catecombs. If he doesn't talk to you at first, hail him and say "the disease is spreading". He asks you to deliver "Blackburrow Stout" to Barn Bloodstone who is outside the Golden Rooster building in Highpass Hold. Make sure your faction with Barn Bloodstone is at least indifferent (to raise it, you can do the "Letter to Janam" and "Letter to Rebby" quests in East Freeport). This results in "Bayle List I": Barn Bloodstone says 'Why thank you, kind citizen! Mutt, throw me the package! Here. This is for your boss. Do not return return to Kane without the other two lists. Some other bixie boy might just beat you to one of the other pieces. Go to Freeport. There you will find a woman called Opal. Quite a looker. I hear she works with the Arcane Scientists. Tell her the disease is spreading. She will help you.' Your faction standing with Coalition of Tradefolk Underground has been adjusted by 20. He asks you to find Frenway Marthank in the Druids' Guildtree of Surefall Glade. Ask him for "The Bayle List". When you do, you'll find Frenway is in a state of depression. His son -- who happened to be carrying the very list you're looking for -- was killed and devoured by the great grizzly bear Mammoth, which lives deep in the caves of Surefall Glade. As a Druid, Frenway is forbidden to harm the bears of the Glade, but he wants vengeance. If you can find and slay Mammoth, you will get the "Bayle list II". QRG Protected Animals: -300 Protectors of Pine: -60 Jaggedpine Treefolk: -60 Karana Bandits: 45 As an alternative, you can do the regurgatonic quest and feed Mammoth the regurgatonic to get the bear to cough up the list. Part Three This part begins with Raltur Caliskon in East Freeport (/loc -1430, 570, -50). The lead-in to this part of the quest happens at one of the possible endings of the Message Intercept quest: Raltur Caliskon says 'So the great Antonius Bayle wishes to ally himself with the mighty Knights of Truth. How pathetic. It would appear that the alliance has spawned infiltrators of sorts. Of course, we of the Dismal Rage are already aware of this, but I am sure Sir Lucan D'Lere knows nothing as usual. I have a [mission] for any evil shadowknight of Innoruuk.' You say, 'What mission?' Raltur Caliskon says 'Antonius Bayle has created a strong alliance with certain groups from four other cities. He and his allies are clearly up to no good, or rather, all good. We require more information. Visiting our fair city is a woman called Lady Shae. You must collect the other two pieces of the list and take them to a scribe by the name of Rathmana Allin. He can be found in the deserts of South Ro. First, you must go ask Venox Tarkog what the Bayle List is. He is here in the shrine and will fill you in on your mission.' You're going to need about 150 into Amiable to get Venox to reply. Without tthat he says: "You have not earned my rage, that is good. You have not earned enough trust from the Dismal Rage, that is bad. Go and find ways to serve us better." So found information regard opal darkbrair that can explain why she will NOT talk to anyone. some time in or before 2002 her conversation where changed by sony. It small change but more than likely this broke the first section of this quest where you are sent to talk to opal in freeport.
found a 2002 translation of old eq help file in the style of windows help file. It contains a lot of info on quest in original everquest , Npc conversation etc. here is the info on opal darkbrair:

So I got curious and finally finished Commander Kan portion of this quest. It does work but it is nothing special outside large faction adjustments.
Ok onto the Quest
1) After you tell commander kane in catacombs "the disease is spreading" he gives you the marked blackburrow stout.
2) Get the Bayle list portion from Barn Bloodstone in High pass by handing in the marked blackburrow stout. He tells you to got to Opal Dark Brair in Caster guild in Freeport. Tried many variation to get to talk to me but NO response. Key phrase "the disease is spreading."
3) Acquired the bayle list portion for starshine in high pass
5) Acquired the bayle list portion from mammoth in Surefall glade
6) turned in the 3 portions to Commander Kane in qeynos aquaducts. He gives the expierence and coin reward and returned the part 3 of the bayle list.
7) Have repeated the quest 3 times now. Apparently he only wants part I & II of bayle list, that is why he returned part III to me. I tried to give each portion of baylist one at time and quest completed when i handed part II. Not sure this make sense since Barn Bloodstone quest text say Commander kane want all 3 parts , but maybe the Opal Dark Brair Unknown portion of quest instructs to do differently.

I've read several posts here and under the actual weapon about how crappy the Rage War Maul is and why would anyone do this quest. Well I did it with my Troll Shadowknight not for the reward but for the challenge. Actually the only mistake I made was not getting my faction with Pietro Zarn up high enough the first time I handed it in. This can be done handing in Bone Chips to one of the other evil NPC's in the general area.
This quest was fun and challenging. I really hope someone finds a way to upgrade the maul or a use for another quest.

Anyone tried (or found) anyone else to turn this in to?
Look for a Mace of Shadowed Soul in bazaar. I just got one recently for 30PP. 19/29 1HB (you shadowknights do keep your 1HB up, don't you??) That's a better damage ratio than a Wurmslayer, for those that don't know and the delay is a lot more reasonable. You also don't need the STR and STA of a giant on steroids to use it like you do with the Wurmy, either.
If you were me and I were you, would we still be friends?

Wow remeber when the stats on this were good. Now adays if the damage isn't atleast half the delay on a 2hs weapon then it sucks. New BABS is awesome.
Finding Mammoth is a big pain. He pops up then disappears pretty quick. Was the hardest part of the quest. Camped the caves in Surefall on and off for a week. Logged in one day, sat down, and Mammoth was on me. Killed easily, got list, invised, and got port out of there. (Troll shadowknights not too popular in Surefall glade).

Just have someone group with you and keep you invisible while you find the darn bear, disband, kill it, reform, re-invis and jet.

Ok you get the Rage War Maul from Pietro Zarn, but what if you turn the list into Commander Kane? My Faction with Zarn is ok but my faction with Kane is Ally. I wonder what item Kane will give you.

I killed Dyllin the other night to get page 30 for the Testament of Vanear. I don't know about parts 1 and 2, but part 3 is definitely no drop.

So why the heck does Barn Bloodstone tell me to talk to Opal in the Academy of Arcane Science and tell her "the disease is spreading"? This must be a broken/forgotten link that was just never implemented, because she doesn't say a thing in response. What a crock.

Opal DarkBriar is also the name of a dark elf in the shine of innoruuk in East Freeport. this is probably the npc you need to give the password to, and not the one in the academy of arcane science. when i tried to tell Opal this phrase, i got no response, but my faction with OpalDarkBriar was only indifferent.

i am not sure if this should be a shadowknight quest because you are kos by bayle and in surefall even if they con indiffernt if anyone has actualy done this quest let me know how you did it please?

You can get a human ranger or druid to help you. Have them get the regurgatonic and turn in the list in SRo with this helper.
FWIW, with help as mentioned above, I completed this quest as a lvl13 DE SK. Weapon is heavy as hell - I get fatigued when soloing, but looks cool and does better damage for me than a BBC even though my 2hs skill is higher.

i have not done this quest yet, but i am puzzled that you would say a shadowknight is Kos to Bayle. i wonder do you know that the Bayle they refer to is Commander Kane Bayle, not Antonius Bayle? Kane Bayle is often found chillin with the Bloodsabers in the Shrine of Bertoxxulous.
Was this weapon recently upgraded? i thought i remembered it being something like a 36/9 2HB

My lvl 12 Erudite SK is threatening faction by Holly Winstalker. The only way I know to get better faction with Surefall Rangers is by going inside Surefall and doing the quests. Starting at threatening to Holly, there is no way you can go inside Surefall and live to complete anything. Maybe starting as a human would give you better starting faction, I dont know. Makes it hard to get inside Surefall to talk to anyone, though you may be able to sneak thru and kill the bear if you could get someone to invisi you (or wait till lvl 30 and do it yourself).

By lvl 30, this weapon is useless. To raise your faction with the treehuggers just kill gnolls (granted you'll have to kill a helluva a lot of em). This quest was basically made for human SKs as almost all others wouldn't have the faction with the FP guildleader to do it, except for DE maybe (he has some weird DE fetish and compares the Dismal Rage with Dark Elves a lot). Anyway, just my 2 cents. Easiest way to do the quest is make a human SK of the plaguebringer and one of Inny to get the **** you need. Give in the tomb of discord and kill the character with the stuff on em and have the other one loot until you get the sword and then give it to your main character. Or just say ***** it and have fun.

Actually, human SKs of Bertox (Qeynos SKs) are also KOS to the Protectors of the Jaggedpine (Surefall rangers). And no, killing gnolls doesn't help. Gnolls raise only your druid faction (Jaggedpine Treefolk), not your ranger faction (Protectors). I *am* a Qeynos SK, so just take my word for it. :)

Unsurprisingly this seems to be another of the evil aligned quests that has been made impossible to complete due to the faction problems with the NPCs involved.

I completed this quest yesterday as a 20 Level Human SK of Innoruuk. First I raised my highhold faction doing the rogue quests here and in Qeynos.
Then I met KANE BAYLE in the Shrine to Bertox, he sent me to Barn. That was easy, one list down.
While I was in HP, I did the murderous Dyllan Camp with a guy waiting for the Testament. I made friends with him, and let him kill Dyllan so he would take the faction hit. (I wasn't grouped with him so we had to wait so I could loot the corpse.) I was forced to do this because my Bard friend convinced me to get good and drunk while waiting and I could not speak straight to ask for the list. In any event, the Bayle list was on his corpse.
Next, I wandered into Surefall. Having killed hundreds of gnolls in my day I was not KOS to the rangers there, though no one would really talk to me. I tried hunting poachers in the caves to raise my druid faction, but in the end it was easier to just kill Mammoth and take the list. I had a 34 Lev Bard with me, so he was able to track mammoth, but I don't think he even had time to get involved with the fighting. A few double hits from my dark reaver (which I got on my way back from HP really cheaply, making the rage more or less useless) and a harm touch later the bear was toast.
Finally, the Bard tried to invis us for the run out of surefall, but he had song problems (thanks to the new exp bugs) so in the end we ran for our lives at top bard speed. The guards still con'd Dubious to me as I ran past them, but I do not know if word of my deeds had spread (i.e. I need to rezone to see the Faction change) or if they just dont care about that bear anymore.
Something I had done raised me to Amiable with my guild in Freeport, so the rest of the quest was quick and easy.
I still have the maul to work up my 2HB, and it hits for about 32-35 damage with my now 22 SK with 104 Strength. (Compared to the 40-45 I', getting with the Dark Reaver).
