Just wanted to post while this spell looks bad at first, it is really a great spell. Here's why.

The usefulness of this spell shines in large, outdoor zones especially. Using this and a ER item I can get nearly 3 bolts in the air in under 10 seconds. Usually they hit for max, which is raised by my focus items and specialization evo to around 520 so far.

520*3=1560 damage. This spell is great for agro kitting, as it allows you to get off this amount or a little less damage in a short duration of time.

Not only that but take a look at the cast time. 2 seconds, so this is also great for getting pesky light blue or green mobs off of you while you are getting beat on. The lower cast time means you have less of a chance of being interupted.

For a comparison of damage. Lava Bolt(Level 49) is 870 damage at base. Add to that spec in Evo and the bracelet, I usually end up hiting for 970 or so every time. But, it has a recast time of 7 seconds. Which means in the time it took me to cast just one Lava Bolt, I could have casted 2-3 SoS. If they both land for full damage, that means 1040 damage + compared to 970 or so.

Char, Level 52. I usually land this spell for around 770 damage, a little more or a little less dependant on partial resists. Casting time of 4.5 seconds. This means that in the time it takes me to do 700 or so damage, I can get off SoS twice for 1040 or so.

Another thing about this spell is the low mana cost. With my int at 199, I can get this spell off at only 5% mana. Char and Lava Bolt take near 10% or more, which means that if I am in trouble and need that last little push to kill a mob, Scars is not only faster but less mana as well.

There is only one problem with this spell, and that is it is a line of sight bolt. But this can also be seen as a good thing since you can hit the mobs from farther away, too. *shrug* all depends on your perspective of it.

The calculations here are innaccurate. Char does 974 base damage.

However, I aggree with its usefulness from the point of speed and therefore interruptability.

My understanding of specialization is that it makes spells in that category cost less mana to cast & slightly decreases your chance of fizzling.

I have never read anything saying specialization increases your damage output on spells.

Your other points about the usefulness of this spell are right on the money. One more benefit that wasn't mentioned is that because we're not doing as much mana per nuke, it's a great way to avoid pulling aggro off the tank. We can chain cast this with only a short pause between casts.
