This task begins with Skal Nethus (map) in the Plane of Knowledge. He's an Erudite found at location -320, 1200, -111 (close to Franklin Teek).

You must kill "Skal`s Waking Nightmare" (random spawn as you kill mobs the hot zones that were introduced on December 14, 2011).

You say, 'Hail, Skal Nethus'

Skal Nethus says 'Adventurer, you have not seen any strange apparitions in your [dreams] lately, have you?'

You say, 'What dreams?'

Skal Nethus says 'Thank the gods! Then it is not too late! After my last, uh, mishap with Dungeon Rot, I went on a walking journey across Norrath, to clear my head and think of my next venture. Eventually night found me in the Feerrott, and I laid my head down upon a mossy statue to [sleep].'

You say, 'To sleep?'

Skal Nethus says 'I have not been sleeping too well. Of late, I have been distracted by my dreams. That night, again I dreamed of the scaled beasts that torment my sleep, with their rough skin and sharp knives. I swatted them away and fought back to the morning light, but when I awoke, the [beasts] were still there, staring down at me, smiling!'

You say, 'What beasts?'

Skal Nethus says 'As I shooed them away, they sneered at me and cackled before running off in all directions. I saw one of them run right into a crocodile and disappear inside! That poor creature must be having the most [distressing] dreams now! '

You say, 'Distressing how?'

Skal Nethus says 'I am sure the nightmare beasts have run all over Norrath by now, invading the minds and dreams of the land's inhabitants. Surely this can only end in widespread, all-consuming madness and delirium. But...it could end in great [power and fortune] for you and me!'

You say, 'What great power and fortune?'

Skal Nethus says 'Do you think a man of my caliber has anything but the most virile, powerful dreams? Even a mind as expansive as mine could not contain them! But if I can somehow [harness] the power of my escaped nightmares, I could create an augment that would far surpass that failure of [Dungeon Rot]!'

You say, 'Harness how?'

Skal Nethus says 'Yes, will you [free] the creatures of Norrath from my nightmare? Only I should have had that burden. With your help, though, we can use my mind for good!'

You say, 'I will free them.'

You have been assigned the task 'Skal`s Waking Nightmare'.

Skal Nethus says 'Thank you!'

Skal's recurring nightmares have come to life and begun to infest the minds of creatures around Norrath. Search for the nightmares hiding inside creatures in Crescent Reach, Blightfire Moors, The Great Divide, Stone Hive, Dranik's Scar, Goru`kar Mesa, The Plane of Disease, Blackfeather Roost, Sunderock Springs, Vergalid Mines, Direwind Cliffs, Ashengate, Korascian Warrens, and the dreamscape of Feerrott.

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Crescent Reach)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Blightfire Moors)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Great Divide)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Stone Hive)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Direwind Cliffs)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Ashengate, Reliquary of the Scale)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (Korascian Warrens)

Kill 1 Skal`s Waking Nightmare 0/1 (The Feerrott)

This last step is in the "dream" Feerrott (House of Thule version).

3 days of trying to level in Cresent R1each and Blightfire with this stupid mob spawning over and over. It just spams mez and charm and you don't get to play the game. I had accepted it on my 70 SK, then bought the persona feature and rolled a wiz. This quest was still in my log, so this mob was still spawning. I didn't understand why until I read the comments below, then removed the quest. This actual waking nightmare for newb zones hasn't spawned again since.

If you're seeing this mob, it's because you have the quest. Drop it if you are not actively seeking this mob to finish the quest.

What an annoying problem to have I almost quit the game.

We were a group of lvl 12-15 killing in Cresent when this Skal's Walking Nightmare popped and killed all of us. With 400hp you dont last long with something hitting in the 5000 damage. I turned out one of our group had taken the quest believing it was just another newbie quest. I wonder why they allow a level 12 to get the quest?

Ahh well - DO NOT ACCEPT the Skals Walking Nightmare quest BEFORE you can take multiple 5000 damage hits.

Yesterday, I was grouped with a guildmate in the Mesa and this thing popped on every 4th to 5th kill. Killed me twice and my guildmate once. Neither of us had the quest. In the past two years I have seen this mob only a few times and it never attacked until attacked deliberately. Yesterday it spawned and attacked immediately making leveling a "nightmare".Smiley: lol

I have been killing alot in Ferrott the Dream, this mob pops up all the time. I have actually spawned her 3 times at once by just leaving her alone and moving down the zone. Not hard at all for a lvl 86 Mage, the pet eats her and I only remember her spells hittin me once or twice, no biggy

Mid March 2014 a change occured, now it spawns with threateningly state. Before it was indifferent state (so if you didn't touch it you could walk away).
Thus be prudent if you see one, do not approach it! When it spawns you have 1-2 seconds to run away before it aggroes. Sometimes you get caught in aoe mez right when it spawns but if you are far away enough you don't aggro.

a) What is it
It's an enchanter siren level 96+ in regard of spells, drop, and probably mana
It's a melee sword woman of your exact level (or highest level in group) in regard of consider color, hp, attack

So your magic resist won't help, it s probably considered an enchanter level 100. The nuke does 6k damage, even if it s level 15 (minimum observed) triggered by a level 9 toon, mez is long and annoying, have horrible stat debuff, etc... your worst nightmare, truly.

b) How to make it spawn
- Main damage dealer must have the quest
- Use melee or direct damage
- Do not abuse of damage over time or it won't spawn (probably to avoid a lower level to kill its last hp and obtain the kill and the spawn of skal's knightmare)
- Chain stun helps a lot, to prevent nasty spells.
- Root from far helps also, to stay out of nasty spells range.

Having a low level kill it, then use a higher level team to kill skal's knightmare works as long as you respect b)

Managed to kill 2 skals in feerrot the dream with an interval of 8h, so not sure about a skal respawn time lockup (activated only if skal gets killed), or if it exists can be as short as 8 hours. Was using melee and dots to make it spawn and aa virulent paralysis (or pestilent paralysis) to keep skal very far and dotted for ultra safe kill (these root aa's for shm and nec never break if only dot is used against target)
Details (erratum)
# Mar 19 2014 at 7:08 AM Rating: Decent
I might have been wrong with dots not working for making skal spawn

It might be a respawn time lockout that occured when i tried killing only with root+dots in feerrot

a 24h respawn time lockout in lv85 zone, and a few mn time lockout in crescent reach, so it may depend on zone level

Shaman with tank merc. Ate my merc then hit me for 2k at lvl 65. And was an even con mob. This was the first step in Crescent Reach. Ouchie.

Was on partially slowable with Balance of the Nihil.

This mob also uses the spell Gentle Nightmare.

Not sure, why she is not spawning for you, the dogs I killed were right at zone in. I am sure this does not help. It is only what i had done. Best of luck!
My experience.

This is what I can gather from doing the quest. I did with my 87 Nec with 3873 AC. The following is abbreviated but it lists: the zones, what I killed just before she spawned, and what she dropped or didn’t drop every time I killed her. She was always DB to me so I am going to assume she is level 85. One quick note, she seemed to get a little tougher, as far as, the duration of my root holding while I was in the upper level hot zones. But here we go:

Crescent Reach - killed a disease spiderling, she dropped immaculate larkspur

Blightfire Moor – killed an accursed lookout and respawned immediately after when I killed Eralynn the Shadow Witch, no drops

Great Divide – a furious tizmak warrior, no drop, had to clear most of caves

Stone Hive – a garden drone, a blossom tender and a flower tender, had 2 up at same time, no drops

Dranik’s Scar – a noc, no drop

Goru`kar Mesa – a mesa wolf, she dropped flawless animal pelt, raw amber nihilite

Plane of Disease – a tachian fly, no drop

Blackfeather Roost – a cunning mountain puma, she dropped urticaceae

Sunderock Springs – a stonefin basilisk, she dropped pristine oleander

Started getting a little tougher…

The Steppes – a crowned mamba, she quaded me for 5202, 4983, 3887, 3887, she dropped portal scrap

Vergalid Mines – a Kickpick miner, she dropped exquisite silk, distilled grade C gormar venom

Direwind Cliffs – a mountain griffon, she dropped immaculate caladium

In Ashengate, she was able to fear me. I don’t know if she casted fear in the earlier versions of her, but she landed it on me in here.

Ashengate – a reliquary’s guardian, she dropped rune binding powder and tantalum ore

Korascian Warren – Skal’s Nightmare popped twice in 3 a crystalline hulks, no drops

The Feerrott, The Dream – a rotdog scavenger , she dropped fantastic animal pelt

Nice aug and easy to complete. The quest took me 6 hours and 5 minutes to complete. I was having huge zoning issues and I died 3 times because of internet issues. Also did not read ahead in the quest, I could have saved A LOT time doing all the Crescent Reach zones together, instead of doing the quest in order. This quest is definitely doable in under 4 hours.

This is based on level. We had 3 in the group with the highest being level 30. Skal's Walking Nightmare popped for us about 3 times and each time was the same level as the highest member of the group. We decided to pick up the quest after this.

Ranger 86 was able to root and hit with arrows. Never broke root and kill was easy. Now off to try to find others.

Got one to pop from one of the gnoll miners in Crescent Reach. I was able to root it with Vinelash Cascade. I hammered it with arrows for several minutes barely making a dent in its life. I finally gave up because I didn't want to give up an hour to try to kill the stupid thing. Once root broke it turned around and walked back to the point where it spawned. Very weird.
