At the end of the previous quest, Loremaster Borannin told you to ask him how you could further advance your reputation with the coldain.

You say, 'How can I further advance my reputation with the coldain?'

Loremaster Borannin says '______! Thank Brell you're here. I was about to send one of my Lorekeepers looking for you. It appears that the information Tanik acquired is most perilous indeed. The Dain has called an emergency session of the council and I must attend. We don't have the luxury of waiting for an appropriate task to arise, you must advance as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I have neither the time, nor the components to fashion the next few shawls for you. Ask Rexx Frostweaver about the prayer shawl and follow his direction carefully.'

Rexx Frostweaver may be found in the Thurgadin Exchange, near the bank.

You say, 'Hail Rexx Frostweaver'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Hmmm, ye be one o them offlanders, don't ye? I've heard some strange tales o yer kind so don't be tryin' any funny business with me. I know the value of a platinum piece and I'll not get cheated by yer foreign coin.'

You say, 'I am here for the next prayer shawl.'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Gather five strands of crystalline silk thread and combine them in a sewing kit to make a crystalline silk fiber. Take this container and combine a glowing shardworm bile with three of the fibers to form a piece of glowing crystalline silk. Five pieces of glowing crystalline silk sewn to your fur-lined shawl will yield a beautiful silk shawl. Become a master in the art of tailoring before risking all you've worked for and be sure to let me inspect your work when it's complete.'

You receive a Glowing Bile Soaker.

Crystalline Silk Thread is an uncommon drop from various spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth. Glowing Worm Bile is a rare drop from various shardwurms in the Great Divide. You will need at least 75 threads and 5 biles, provided you don't fail at all. Combine 5 Crystalline Silk Threads in a sewing kit or loom to craft Crystalline Silk Fiber (trivial 51). Combine 3 Crystalline Silk Fibers and a Glowing Worm Bile in the Glowing Bile Soaker to craft a Glowing Crystalline Silk Piece (no-fail). Combine 5 Glowing Crystalline Silk Pieces with your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit or loom to craft a Silk Coldain Fur Shawl (trivial 115). If you fail the final combine, you will get your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl back.

Give the Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl to Rexx Frostweaver.

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Splendid, ______, this is beautiful workmanship! As the Grand Historian may have mentioned, our esteemed Dain Frostreaver the fourth is making some important plans with his council. These plans will doubtlessly include you if the Dain deems you worthy.'

You say, 'Am I worthy?'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'To ensure your worthiness you must continue to refine your prayer shawl. Speak with my wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl and listen carefully to her words. Hurry now, there seems to be a sense of urgency about.'

A couple of people have posted that upon failing their final combine they still got the shawl back. Can a few more people verify this?

My tailoring is not very good but I am slowly working on it. Just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel sometime soon.

Where is the connection from the completion of the 5th shawl to the start of 6th shawl? There seems to be a piece missing.
Hehe, I shoulda played the Lottery too!

Ok, I'm a coder and thus far from what I can deduce on everquests trade system is as follows:

Every item has a difficulty modifier. This is different but related to the items trivial. The difficulty modifier makes an item harder to create.

I have no clue to the numbers, but this is how I see the system working.

Let's say you have 100 point in tailoring.. Let's say verant made that a +35 to your roll on a 100 (just assuming, I have no clue).

Now let's assume the difficulty of the item is rated at 60. For 120 skill points.. The game would then roll some random number add your skill modifier and see if you are successfull.. This is why I have seen a person with 20 skill do work and CREATE an item that takes 140 skill to become trivial at.

So in a nutshell it's about the bonus you get from a high tailoring skill and a degree of luck on creating items.

'Periods' that people see are merely factors of srand and coincidental.. Often a rand() function can return several successes in a row and several failures in a row depending on the random seed that was chosen.
What happens after?

Ok,
I succeeded on my final combine, my Tailoring was at 128. I notice that Rexx Frostweaver says 'Be sure to let me inspect your work when its complete'. Has anyone actually handed over your shawl to this guy after making it? If so, what happens? I would expect just xp and faction, and maybe a lead in to the 6th quest. But I am reluctant to just hand it over without some confirmation, would really hate to get that 'Im not really sure what to do with this but thanks'.

Failed THREE times on the final shawl so far

Do I just have crap luck?

I think the key for you may lie in the 109 int factor :(

combining the silk and bile will never fail as it is a quest container and will not fail regardless of skill
Success!

Greetings,

I attempted this shawl tonight with a skill of 113. My wis was 123 and my int was 214 and my dex was 80 with no shawl in my shoulder slot. It's very nice. For others attempting this quest and working on their tailoring, here is my suggestion.

It seems apparent that people from 110+ can make this item. I've even heard of one fellow who made it at 95, lsob. So my question was how? How could some make it at such a low level and others not even at high levels. Is it totally luck? Is there a rand() blasting away in the background viscously ruining others and blessing a few? I thought not.

I htought not because I had made an observation of the trade skill engine ever since I started trade skills. Here are my observations and I hope that you all can use them in your efforts:

1) Skill advancement appears to consist of two time periods which repeat, one period in which you advance rather quickly, and another period in which you have many success or failures but no advancement.

2) The length and duration of each period, and the amount you advance is directly related to your highest int/wis value. So for me, I would generally advance 3 points at a time. The pattern when I was in the advancement period was like (advance, advance, no advance, no advance, advance). A troll then asked me why his pattern was only 1 advancement when he entered the advancement period, and I can only speculate that the pattern is based on his int, which was 56 at the time. So, the higher your int/wis, probably the more fruitful your advancement period will be.

3) My advancement profile was VERY STABLE. I speculate everyone is this way. Almost 95% of my advancement periods were like how I stated above. I expect others will have the same experience.

So given these things, I drew a speculation that I bet no matter WHAT I tried to combine on an advancment step in my advancement period, it would succeed. So, right before I tried my shawl combine, I made sure that I had just hit my first advancement slot by making wu armor. I hit 113 on my last wu armor combine, threw together my shawl items, hit combine, and sure enough, advanced to 114 and had a success.

So, this is speculation, I know, but I think it makes sense. Give it a try if you like, but be like me and have a backup of glowing swatches just in case. =)

This pattern will indicate exactly when you should try the combine once 110+ in tailoring.

I just did this quest. Made all the glowing crystalline silk without one failure.
With a tailoring skill of 122 I FAILED combining the 5 glowing crystalline silks and got my Fur-lined Shawl back!
Ugh! 75 more silk threads and 5 more biles again! I can't belive it! How high do you have to be in tailoring???

Made the 5th shawl today, got all 5 biles off Elders. Had 124 in Tailoring, 222 Wis, 119 Int.

0 Failures but the glowing crystalline silk and final combine were not trivial. :)

Now back to tailoring :)

Good luck all

I combined the 5 silk threads yesterday at a skill of 90 and it was trivial there. I will prolly work my tailoring skill all the way up to 158 before the final combine though. I am gonna need to have it high for the next shawl anyways so why risk it. BTW I got 2 biles yesterday going through like 10 wurms and got over half the threads I need from fighting in Velk's for 3 hours. I also can confir that the glowing wurms are definitely the ones that have the bile. I have absolutely no doubt in this. You can only really tell that they are glowing at night and the bile strangely enough looks like rabbit eat. ;)

Completed the quest, I can tell you that the fibers went trivial at 111 (they got me from 109 to 111). I got my skill to 116 before I had to try the final combine. It was a success and it was trivial. Hope this helps.

Just because you failed on them at 140 does not mean that they are not yet trivial. It is entirely possible to fail at something no matter how easy it is and how skilled you are. With a skill of 187 in brewing I still sometimes fail at heady kiolas, and they are trivial at 46. You do not get the message that says that the item is trivial if you fail, so there is no way to be certain whether or not it is trivial until you succeed and see if you get the trivial message. But, since they were trivial to me last night when I combined five threads with a skill of 127, it seems safe to say that they were trivial to you at 140 :)

Increasing you Dex will help getting a successfull result. Int will help skill get up faster.

That's a common misconception...actually your wis or int is the primary stat that determines whether or not you improve your skill with each attempt. For tailoring, dexterity provides a bonus to wis or int to give you a greater chance of gaining skill. (For smithing, strength does the same thing.) The ONLY thing that determines whether or not you actually succeed is your level of skill in whatever trade skill you are doing. In other words a tailor who is at 250 tailoring has absolutely no use whatsoever for dexterity or int/wis.

Wurms
# Aug 02 2001 at 9:23 AM Rating: Good
After spending 10 hours killing the wurms with a Mage ( she lvl 54 and im a lvl 58 wiz ) It seemed to be that the biles only dropped off of Elders, yes all 10 biles dropped off elders, young gave us claws and fangs or whatever they are but never bile, and Ancients gave claw and fangs and spells but no bile. Spells only dropped of the Ancients, and the Matriach, and Shardwurm popped 4 times and we got 3 14ac 35hp/mana tunic ( lore ) a 30hp/mana 10sv All priest 2nd hand only item, a shardwurm eye range 5int 3dex and some white scale pants 5ac 2int casters only and white scale tunic 8ac 3int 5sv cold caster only. Neither of us could see them doing the glowing thing.

Also failed twice combining threads at 43 (not trivial) but have 58 now so trying again.

I have gotten two biles from looting elder shardwurms killed by other people who didn't want them. The other two I got by running around Great Divide at night looking for glowing young shardwurms. They *do* glow if you have dynamic lighting turned on, and the ones that glow will always have the bile. You can see the glow as soon as you see the wurm. You do not see the effect during the day, but it is extremely obvious at night. It is very hard to see if you are hunting anything inside the shardwurm caves because of the light from the torches and the velium river. Those sometimes make it look like a wurm is glowing when it isn't really, or can hide the glow on a wurm that has a bile.

Any of the Gread Divide shardwurms wurms can drop bile, and the ones with it *will* glow.

Due to the graphic limitations on some video cards the ground glow affect given by the wurms carying the bile may not be seen on every computer. Although I grouped with a shaman the other day which was quite impressed that i could call the ones that were going to drop the bile.

I found the trivial of combining the threads to be around 75. (for the slower people out there... I'm talking Tailoring)

I believe there is no trivial for soaking the threads in bile.... As you do not see any trivial message.

Combining the threads to fibres is trivial at 129 tailoring, but 3 fibres and a bile IS NOT trivial at 129, so be careful all.

Hope this helps,

I started combining the fibers and the biles at a tailoring skill of 13. I was already hunting in Velks Lab and decided I'd work on my tailoring skill while doing the quest. Yes I faild ALOT at first making the fibers. But when I combined the 3 fibers and the biles in the soaker 5 out of 5 attempts I was successful. Now I'm not saying there isn't a trivial skill for those... But I doubt there is with my skill only being 13. Now as for combining the 5 bile silks with my shawl I'm sure there is a trivial skill for this because I failed making it but I did get my shawl back. I went out and got 5 more bile silks and now my tailor skill is somewhere around 35. I'm gonna wait till somewhere around 130 before I'll try combining my shawl with the bile silks again.
