This quest begins with Umvera Dekash in South Qeynos. He's in The Herb Jar (around the corner from the bank in South Qeynos). He may also spawn in Crow's Tavern in North Qeynos, but this is not confirmed.

You say, 'Hail, Umvera Dekash'

Umvera Dekash says 'What, _____? Do I look like a merchant to you? Just because all these merchants are in my library, it doesn't mean that I am one. If you are interested in something other than spell scrolls, then, we can talk.'

You say, 'I am interested in something other than spell scrolls'

Umvera Dekash says 'Ah, so you do have half a wit about you! Very well. As you can clearly see, I am the librarian here. I keep track of all of the mystic tomes that enter this divine building. I also take care of all of the purchasing. Have you something to offer?'

You say, 'I have something to offer'

Umvera Dekash says 'Excellent! You have no idea how difficult it is to get good help these days. Do you think you would have the time to gather some information for me?'

You say, 'I have the time to gather information for you'

Umvera Dekash says 'Even better! Well, it has been some time since the Tesch Val gnolls moved in on the Split Paw. That being said, we still know little to nothing of their origins. If you can bring me back the four scrolls that our diviners speak of, I believe I can reward you well.'

Head to South Karana and collect four different Tanned Split Paw Skin scrolls. These are LORE items and look like rolled up scrolls. When you right click you can read the message written on them if you are fluent in gnoll. But even those unversed in gnoll can notice the number on the page. Collect scroll Volume 1, 2, 3, and 4, and return them to Umvera in Qeynos:

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'It's about time. Let's see here. Right.. right.. right. Very good. Right. There you are! I translated the text. Now the scrolls need to be bound. Take these scrolls to Jheron Felkis in Freeport. I believe he is staying in one of the spare rooms in Velith and Bardo's establishment. He will ensure they are bound correctly. Return to me when the binding is complete.'

Receive Tesch Val Compilation from Umvera and then travel to East Freeport.

Jheron Felkis is located in East Freeport in the building "Velith and Bardo's" (third floor; you can CTRL+F Find "Innkeep Rastle" and go upstairs in the building the Innkeep is in). Hand him the compilation.

You say, 'Hail, Jheron Felkis'

Jheron Felkis says 'Ah, greetings, traveler! Settled into one of these rooms, have you? Well, this room is mine, so get out! Hey, wait! You aren't here to deliver a shipment of books to me, are you?'

You say, 'What shipment of books?'

Jheron Felkis says 'Oh, I typically receive monthly shipments of books from Umvera Dekash. I hear he has recently been promoted to senior librarian in Erudin. What a vaulted position! I could only aspire. I'm not going to be binding books forever, you know!

Jheron Felkis says 'So you are from Umvera! What is this? Oh my! Interesting! I'll bind them right away! A little snip here..a little snip there.. All done! That didn't take long, did it? I won't be doing this forever, you know. After the milita burned down my father's home, he could not afford to send me through proper schooling. Ah well, such is life!'

You receive a Pawbook. You can open it up and read it (8 pages of text). Take this back to Umvera in Qeynos.

Umvera Dekash says 'You have returned safely. That is wonderful! Where the heck is my book, child? In my hands, I see. Such a bright little twinkle you are! Well, let me scribble something down on this pad here. There you are. Take this note to Durkis Battlemore in the Butcherblock Mountains. He is a remarkable smith, but more importantly, he owes me for his smithing books.'

Durkis Battlemore is in the Butcherblock Mountains inside one of the guard buildings: location 2072, 400 (on the path leading from the dock, just before Kaladim).

You say, 'Hail, Durkis Battlemore'

Durkis Battlemore says 'What have ye got there, lad? Ack. I thought I would never hear from that crazy old man again. He wants me to give you a pair o' me gauntlets. I suppose I kin do that. Here you are, Southern. Wear them in good health.'

You receive Gem Inlaid Gauntlets.

These gloves work for any mid level melee class

If you look at the stats and the relative ease to acquire ( I grouped at the spire with 4 folks, I am lvl 24 Paladin, me and the lvl 27 Cleric both got all 4 in about an hour), these gloves are great! I am wearing SP gloves now which are AC4 +3dex,+2 wis, being a half elf I focus more on melee than casting as a Paladin anyway so Ill take the +4ac difference and save at least 8pp that banded would cost. For those fasion conscious they have a chain look, so casters and druids take note :).

I did the quest in about 2 hours, simply by running around looting corpses that people lay around. I had to buy the scroll #1 for 5pp just to save time. Oh yeah, with 8 AC I would think these gloves would be very nice for casters (especially enchanters, who tend to work on AC after getting intelligence to 200).
mmm

Casters should get manaitems when they reach 200 int to help us punchingbags and nuke the hell out of mobs. :)

And chanters need cha for mob control. :)

Just my oppinion though.
Kaladim Faction
# Nov 08 2000 at 2:05 PM Rating: Default
Well, I have been a bad Druid and destroyed my faction with Kaladim Citizens... So now in Paw I gather these four scrolls and do the quest. I port to BB, where my factions has gotten me killed before. The last item to turn in IS NO-DROP so I had to go. Durkis and the two gaurds outside his hut did not attack me and no other citizens are within Aggro range. So it is possible to still do thsi quest even with this faction hit.

I don't know if your faction is so bad you can't do it. All I can say is I did it with a Paladin mule, and he was dubious to Durkis, but was still able to complete the quest. Durkis wouldn't talk to me until after he gave me the gloves.

If you have already done the quest to the point that you have the no drop note, and if Durkis won't kill you (dubious or up /con) then you have nothing to lose trying it. You can't give the note away, and its only a single item so you can't use the 2 man quest trick.
Inside or Outside?
# Nov 08 2000 at 1:26 PM Rating: Default
I have found that the scrolls drop from the outside gnolls and have not found any inside gnolls with these lore-type scrolls. This true? Or just my luck?
Also, I am having trouble getting scroll number 3. This the rare one?

The Tesch Mas gnolls (as opposed to the other classes and ranks) inside and outside seem to drop the scrolls with about the same frequency, and I've camped both zones fairly extensively. I honestly can't remember if the other gnolls inside Paw drop the scrolls. I also seem to remember an Escaped Splitpaw dropping a scroll once, but then again I might have been hallucinating <g>.

A note for Barbarians
# Nov 07 2000 at 4:54 AM Rating: Good
I found out the hard way ... the letter to Battlemore you get is No Drop and Battlemore himself is located deep inside the guard hut with an entrance too small for a Barbarian. I couldn't reach him to give him the letter and I couldn't deliver the letter through a smaller char due to the No Drop status.
You either have to switch chars earlier in the quest (regretfully I didn't check the status of the other items) or do it my way :-)
I asked a lvl 1 cleric to cast Strike on Battlemore to pull him from the hut. That way I could give the letter to the dwarf outside the hut. Needless to say the newbie was killed in the process. I rewarded him well for this minor inconvenience ;-)
If anyone has a better suggestion let me know. I'm planning on redoing this quest.

Taunt a bat then RUN to the house. The dwarf will come out to kill it. Then hand him the note.
Easier than you might think!
# Nov 27 2000 at 3:54 PM Rating: Good
I was facing this same problem, unable to fit through the doorway, when all of a sudden ol' Durkis runs through the wall to attack a nearby snake. Then he decided to go wandering off, at which point I gave him the book and got my gauntlets. So if all else fails, pull some sort of critter to the back of the hut (not the front near the other guards) and he should come out to "save" you.

ok, I was having this problem with my Barbarian so I tried this idea and it worked well I just wanted to add one thing,Durkis came out the back and killed the creature but he went right back in. So have the note in your hand and as he walking back give him the note and hit the give button, don't worry if your to slow the note just goes back into your inventory and you can just try again.

Occasionally, I have been able to give items to NPCs through walls. If you haven't already, you might want to give this a try.

You could also use a shrink potion, works in every zone. That way you could fit through the entrance...
Just thought I would add some info

Hail.

I submitted this quest here on behalf of one of my members (Zadon Von Slaymaker), but first me and my brother did the complete quest to try it out. It is possible for a person to do this quest in less then 4 hours but they would need some teleports and maybe buy the scrolls they don't get right away.

Me and my brother were both level 24 when we did this quest. Him a DE Mage, me a DE Necro. We spent a whole 8 hour session killing gnolls outside of Paw. In that time we got 1 complete set of 4 skins and 2 skins for a second set. I ended up buying the last 2 skins from someone else outside paw. I am sure a high level could slaughter gnolls and get the skins faster, but outside paw is camped almost 24/7 so you would not be able to kill them that fast usually. You can also buy the skins, but I noticed since this quest was posted more people are buying and more people keeping them. I didn't mind the 8 hour camp as we did a level and a half of experience and made some good coin and loot. The quest was just a bonus.

After getting the skins, the most boring part for us was the travel between Qeynos to Freeport, back to Qeynos then to Butcherblock. Morell-Thule doesn't have a lot of high levels on early in the morning and we had to hoof it ourselves, with some donated SoW's, so that part alone took a few hours. Also, since we are both DE's, we created mules in Qeynos to do the quest. I used a Paladin of Rodcet Nife. His factions were as follows... to the librarian Umvera Dekash, my mule was indifferent, to Jheron Felkis in Freeport he was amiable, and finally to Durkis Battlemore in BB he was apprehensive, but was still able to complet the quest. Note that none of the completed parts of the quest gave any faction changes and only a little experience (I got a total of only about 2 bubbles on my level 4 mule) Also, the only item that is no drop is the note Umvera gives you to take to Durkis.

All in all, a pretty nice quest I though.

Well, since no one is mentioning this here, I have a question. Can you just hand in the 4 scrolls and get the quest started, or do you have to say something specific to start the quest, then hand him the pages? In Qeynos that is.
RE: Just thought I would add some info
# Dec 29 2000 at 1:47 PM Rating: Default
You can just hand the scrolls to him. I did it last night.
more than 4 hours
# Nov 02 2000 at 8:52 AM Rating: Default
At least for me it'll take more than 4 hours. I spent 3 hours yesterday deep inside with a friend (her and me are 55) and we killed TONS of gnolls. We only got 3 pages and all of them were the page number 3 =(.
Less then 4 hours
# Oct 31 2000 at 12:11 PM Rating: Decent
I went to split paw on a not so busy night and got all 4 skins in about an hour and a half.

Usually there are 4 or 5 groups in or around Paw, just ask the people there if you can have any skins or buy the skins off them, you can get them all in no time.

The only people that really need these gloves are monks, so there isnt a huge demand for them...yet
RE: Less then 4 hours
# Nov 28 2000 at 12:25 AM Rating: Default
With the stats these gaunts have and the relative ease with which you can obtain them, expect lore SP skins to be in high demand.
RE: Less then 4 hours
# Oct 31 2000 at 3:58 PM Rating: Default
Think of the difference between this glove and the Treant Fist.

Treant Fist AC 8 +3DEX +5HP 30 hours total camp-all parts no drop

Gem Inlaid Gauntlets AC 8 +3DEX +3STA (which is about 3 to 5 HP) 4-8 hours total camp.

Anyone see a problem here? Treants have to be upgraded because the camp time is not fair!

I am a 25th Season Monk and I just completed this quest, without buying any of the skins. A good group of 25 - 28's can take the gnolls. It will take longer than 4 hours, though.
true value
# Oct 31 2000 at 10:57 AM Rating: Default
You're missing the point here .. a MONK discovered and had verant fix this quest, because these gloves are awsome **monk** gloves. Sure, you can ponce off to Warslik's and leech a pair of Iksar gloves, but monks can't. They weigh too much.

The GIG's are equal in real stats to monk-only treant fists .. a quest which takes hundreds of real hours to complete; so .. now you know.
hehe

I guess people won't be destroying those lore skins anymore when killing gnolls.
Hmm
# Oct 31 2000 at 3:48 AM Rating: Default
Or you could just go to warslike woods and find people killing Graslik for his earring and leaving his gloves to rot...
some quick notes on this

frist off any lvl person may do this quest.
and it take a lot longer then 4 hour to fishen this quest.
RE: some quick notes on this
# Oct 30 2000 at 9:08 PM Rating: Default
Um, don't they have to be high enough to kill the gnolls?

If you're talking about just looting the skins off other kills, nearly any quest can be "done by any level" under those terms.
RE: some quick notes on this
# Dec 02 2000 at 1:20 AM Rating: Default
no, some quests have level limits imposed on them, because they know people will do what you describe, but as my friend says: you cant beat a level 30 paladin with a soulfire (if you have some high level friends you could probably get this at level 1(maybe not hehe)but at least at 30, talk about some serious twinking...)
