No one really spends time doing these newbie armor quests anymore from what I can tell, but in the event that someone decides to for the sake of nostalgia or whatever, the most common place to find these is in GFay off of the large widows and widow hatchlings. They are spread out so prepare to do a lot of walking, but they are easier to find in GFay than in Tox. The only mobs in Tox I have found that drop them currently are the widow hatchlings... only finding
  • Woven Widow Silk
  • on the large widows in Tox. Happy hunting!

Shhh! dont let SOE learn of this or they'll likely nerf it...in GFay go to coordinates 1733 x 1116 x -33. at this spot you will see a widow spawn every 30 sec. and every one in three will have the silk.
I just discovered this on my own, so chk it out and confirm please...

We've got spider silks, right? We've got looms, right? Wouldn't it make sense if you could make woven spider silks?? Just a thought.

Roamed and slaughtered in Tox, too. Horrible luck. Turns out you need to killt he Widows.. whether they're the little ones or the big ones, but the Widows, and only the Widows, drop this item. My best luck for finding them was in the North Eastern part of the Southern part of the zone. (Below the river, to the East), slightly West of a Kobold camp. Even there, it wasn't great, but I got about three inside of six minutes, so the ratio is about the same as your time in EC.

You might be thinking about Silk Cord which has the same graphic. The tailoring recipes using Spiderling Silk are:

2 Spiderling Silk = Silk Thread
2 Silk Threads = Silk Bandage
3 Silk Threads = Silk Cord

Been hunting for these in Tox for 5 levels now, haven't seen one drop yet off either spider species...
And we need how many for a complete Craftkeeper's set?! :\

(Sounds like the Kobold scalps in Steamfont before they started dropping almost every time)

I thought the same thing, and even sent a petition to that effect (the reply was to submit a bug report). However, while waiting for a reply, I decided to take on a Giant Widow Spider, rather than the Widow Hatchlings and Large Widows I was hunting before. These were only dropping non-woven silk and woven WIDOW's silk (which doesn't work in the recipe, I tried.)

At Level 7, the Giant Widow was yellow to me, and I don't think I could have killed it if I hadn't recently learned how to chain-cast earth elementalkins. The Giant DID drop a woven spider's silk. I was able to hunt two of these tonight and got two w.s.s.'s.

However, I also ventured into Greater Faydark, killed a couple Widow Hatchlings, (which are very green to me) and got a woven spider silk from the second one. Wierd.

With the silks I got, I built a bracer and a sleeves. Pretty decent, I guess.

Here's an update on the search for Woven Spider Silks. I ventured into East Commonlands, outside of Freeport, and found that the Large Spiders there do drop these. I killed three, got one W.S.S from only one of them. Took me a while to find them, too, I would say about an hour to get the three spiders.
HOWEVER, the merchants in this area carry this item! I bought six of them for 5G 5S 8C apiece, and the merchant had more to sell. Kinda pricey, but saved me the time of hunting :).
I just saw a post about the Erudin Robe that states that the creatures in the Warrens drop some stuff that Toxx creatures don't. Not sure if there are spiders in there, but I'm gonna try that area tomorrow and see.

    Good way to find these

Check the local venders, they sell for 2 gold and buy for about 5 usually, so people that dont need them will sell them. Also check the PoK merchants, mostly the building with various merchants surrounding the outside, half of which gnomes (or are those dwarves), sometimes people will have a few after coming back from a various zone, I think i found about 5 in the tailoring room in PoK. Various large spiders drop these also.

As far as East Commonlands, I have never seen woven silk drop off of them, though it is somewhat dropped from Large Spiders, probably 1/10, I think i even got about 5 of these one day with my enchanter, but I'm not planning on doing her armour anytime soon since High Elf enchanter armour is so hard to do.

And to clear up one misconception, you CANNOT make this, it is a drop only. No clue how spiders manage to weave their silk while you are killing them but whatever. Happy Hunting.

These are also found on the widow hatchlings in Greater Faydark.
