Can anyone tell me if this spell is still used for ... well what it is supposed to do?
I picked up Salil's Writ pg. 64, and looking it up online, they say there is a left and a right half. So I did what it stated and used Identify on myself (since I need a target) and nothing. I put it in a bag, in a top slot ... no way to tell. Nothing in the description of the writ that says it has been identified.
Is this spell used for anything anymore?

Just to clarify, you have to have the item on your pointer and have yourself targeted for it to work.

This spell is used in some different quests to identify different items that are called the same thing, but are actually different. I know that it is used in the Creator missions, and I know of another quest where you need to collect 10 staffs from 10 zones, but they are called the same thing. When you identify them they tell you which zone they are from. I'm sorry for the life of me I cannot remember what these items are called, but the drop from the DSP era of zones. I'm sure there are tons of other quests where you need to identify things as well. Plus, sometimes, items do say amusing things ^_^
For the non-mage there is a quick little quest to get an item called the Star of Eyes. It says mage only, but anyone can use it from inventory. Usefull, especially if you cannot get a mage in your Creators!

You are absolutely right in its usage. Maybe even a better explaination is quite a few of the Iksar quests involve looting "pages" and with this spell you can Identify which ones you have, therefore you know which ones you are missing and can then shout in the zone for them or head to the Bazaar. Either way this spell can become quite useful on the collection quests.
This is also true for the Parts for Bellfast quest in Corathus Creep, which requires obtaining items which otherwise appear identical.

If this is the spell I think it is, it's useful for identifying lucid shards for the key to Vex Thal. It can also be used to identify which quarters of the medallion for the PoTactics key.
I must be missunderstanding this spell because i thought you could target someone cast the spell and find the stats of the persons primary slot or something that's what it sounded like in the discription I'll take another look but will someone please tell me exactly how to use this spell and what it does............would be mist appreciated
This spell is used to retrieve the lore information from an item. You pick up an item on the cursor and cast identify, it will display any secret text that belongs to it. You can also cast this on anyone else while they have something on the cursor, and they will see the lore info.
An example would be the clay bracelet quest. You have to collect 4 different "runes" from 3 gnome necromancers throughout Norrath and 1 from an aqua goblin in OOT. Each of the runes says Rune of Clay, but when you cast identify it will say left, right, bottom, or top.
I've never found a good use for this spell.

I've been told it comes in very prominently in instanced zones. It can make the difference between life and death for your party when using the right object can easily beat a certain enemy and using the wrong one will wipe out your party.
I think the main purpose of this spell is for Instances.

Was just wondering how a caster can identify an item that is no-drop on another character. Any advise would be helpful.

The person with the item needs ot hold it on their cursor. You target the character and cast Identify, and THEY will see the item lore.

...if you cast identify, for example, on Shainai's Nightie from Shar Vahl, it says "You beat up a little girl to get this."

To make Identify work, you MUST have the item you want to identify "floating" on your cursor, after that, target yourself and click on the gem that is identify.
for the Mage focus items you need "a Torch"
which identifies as "Torch of Alna"
but you can get confused if you buy "a Torch" from a vendor since the names are the same

So i just got identify and i used it (by getting item and pretend to drop it then when drop message comes up cast spell)and it says exactly wat the name of the otem is woohooo kewl spell NOT !!!!!!! Please advise how this spell hlps me cos i never had it before and am wondering.

I'm a lvl 40 wiz and have yet to use this spell to tell me anything I didn't already know. As best I can tell, there is no point to this spell. I doesn't even tell you the difference between the two runes of fulguration.
Try identifying something that's a lore item, or some stuff from ToFS.

For example, I had a Black Acrylia Halberd, and when I cast Identify on it, I got the message: "Item lore: shadows swirl on the head of this halberd." Or when I cast Identify on a Shield of Shadows: "Item lore: the shield glares at you."
Sometimes it's just fun stuff like that, or sometimes you need to, for example, collect 10 runes all named the same thing. If you use Identify, you would get a different message for each one.
