You need the ingot and icon of Devout and 2 bars of vulcanized platinum (give enchanted platinum to Villisia for this). The Icon of Devout is looted from a Minotaur Sentry in the Minotaur caves found in Steamfont. The Ingot of Devout is found on a Glacier Bear in the caves under the river in Everfrost peaks.

You say, 'Hail, Gavel the Temperant'

Gavel the Temperant says, 'May the fires of Solusek Ro warm your innards! I am Gavel the Temperant. I work with Sister Blaize to forge the most elegant finery for clerics known to man or beast. Because we have no need for material wealth here in the temple, we ask that you retrieve [ingots and icons] from the lost or fallen brothers and sisters of our order. When mixed with some enchanted, [galvanized], [vulcanized], or [magnetized] platinum into an alloy, the items I can forge are splendid indeed!'

You say, 'ingots and icons'

Gavel the Temperant says, 'The ingots and icons are all named after the virtues of the cleric who held them. The virtues I require are those of the [reverent], the [constant], and the [devout].'

You say, 'devout'

Gavel the Temperant says, 'Nebbletob the Devout was once a slave in the mines of Meldrath. The Minotaur Sentry there was particularly cruel to him. He was in the expedition to Everfrost when Brother Theo drowned. When trying to rescue Theo, he came upon some caves under the river. He also narrowly escaped death when a great white beast attacked him. He never saw what the beast was, but it shredded his pack where he kept his icon. Bring me the ingot of the Devout, the icon of the Devout, and 2 vulcanized platinum bars and I will forge them into a reward for you.'

You say, 'vulcanized'

Gavel the Temperant says, 'Enchanted platinum bars can be galvanized by Genni, vulcanized by Vilissia, and magnetized by Ostorm. Just give them the enchanted platinum bar and they will do the rest.'

You say, 'Hail, Vilissia'

Vilissia says, 'I am Vilissia, chosen of Solusek Ro. I am a practitioner in the wizardly arts, and keeper of lore for the [runescale cloak], [Tishan's kilt] and the [acumen mask].'

You offered 1 Enchanted Platinum Bar to Vilissia.

I MQed this yesterday for an alt on the same account. My main(52 Paladin) has no trouble getting the ingredients for the quest, but my low level cleric cannot get them solo. So, what I did was aquire both ingot and icon with my paladin, turn them in to Gavel, log out of my paladin, log on to my cleric, which I already had in the temple of sol ro, and have her hand in the bars of vulcanized platinum, and recieved the shield.

My paladin has amiably faction, and my cleric has indifferent. The time frame between paladin log out and cleric log in is was short. I am not sure how long you would have before the quest resets, perhaps till someone else turns something in to Gavel.

Also, to find the Glacier Bear, I brought a low level ranger alt for tracking, which was fortunate, because the bear was up, but inside a wall, or below the world. It agroed on my paladin regardless though, so all worked out. Dropped both the pelt and the ingot.

Anyway, just thought I would share my experience. Good luck to all attempting this quest.

Take a second look at this shield

I did not fully appreciate the stats on this shield until I had actually completed the quest and received the shield. Why? This shield only has a WT of 0.5. And gives 5 STR to boot. As an Erudite cleric with 65 base STR, this is a big deal. For those of you who would rather have wisdom, get the Testament of Vaneer also. Keep this in your backpack. The beauty of this shield is that you can pull this out when you need AC, and use the Testament when you need wis. And since neither weigh anything, so you are not encumbered. And once you get to the level where you can do this quest, you can also get a Paw of Opalla. I normally use the Paw in primary and this in secondary for a total of 24AC. The 5 STR allows be to swap out my Orc fang earrings for Forest Loops, which gives me another 6 wis boost.

Give a copper to a minotaur, just like in 'CB' crush bone slaves.

The AC is great! The stats are nice too. What other shield can you actually obtain yourself in your 20s with 15AC and nice stats for any class? Sure you'll have plenty of oportunity to get somethign better once you hit 50

Wis isn't everything for a cleric. There's a reason you can wear plate and your defense skill goes up to 200. compare that to a druid's defensive ability or even worse, a pure caster's.

It's important for a cleric to stay alive, and healing can get you a lot of aggro, particularly if you dont have good crowd control (eg no chanters/necros to mez) so AC and hp are pretty useful too, especially in a crunch situation where you may have to rez people later.

Sentry Spawn
# Sep 24 2001 at 11:47 AM Rating: Decent
I've attempted to start this quest in Steamfont on 3 different occasions, but the sentry's have never spawned. Does anyone know what you have to do to get them to spawn, or how long their spawn rate is? I know Meldrath's rate is approx. 30 min. We cleared him 4 times in 1 night, but no sentry's. Any ideas? :)
worth it?

I think any cleric would be better off with a charred guardian. Str is always nice, but clerics dont really need it. The only thing better about this sheild is the ac. Id recomend the charred guardian over this.
