This is the Vah Shir Beastlord quest series. You must first do the citizenship quest.

    Part 1 - Handwraps

Animist Poren needs to see your Acrylia Slate.

Animist Poren says "I have much for you to do . There is a great need for capable Khati Sha in this new land. It is important that you progress speedily. We need to outfit you with the equipment that defines our chosen path. We'll start with your battleclaws, but be aware of the fact that it will take you some time.before you can use both sets in combat. Just keep them both with you while you learn.

Animist Poren says "Take this stitching pack and combine two shadeling silks from the xakra worms. Combine two of the threads to make a bandage. Take this pattern and sew together three of the bandages. With considerable practice this will produce the handwraps that will be a foundation for your first sacred weapon. When you have created them retuen to me the scrap material.

He then gives you a Khati Sha Handwrap Pattern and a Stitching Pack.

    To make the handwraps:

    (1) Combine two shadeling silks in the Stitching Pack to make a Shade Silk Thread. Silks are found on the Xakla Larvae in the pit (Shar Vahl) and on the Xakla Silkworms in Shadeweaver's Thicket.
    (2) Combine 2 Shade Silk Threads in the Stitching Pack to make a Shade Silk Bandage.
    (3) Combine 3 Shade Silk Bandages and the Khati Sha Handwrap Pattern to make Khati Sha Handwraps.

Successfully making the Handwraps (which is possible with a Tailoring skill of 4 - though unlikely!) also generates a Silk Scrap. Return the scrap to Animist Poren for part 2 of the quest

    Part 2 - Claws

Upon giving Animist Poren the Shade Silk Scraps:

Animist Poren says, 'That took quite some time considering the simplicity of the task. Please _______, work on becoming more efficient. We have much to do and time is of the essence. In your stitching pack, combine the handwraps, two young hopperclaws and forged fasteners. Return to me with the resulting claws and your [initiate's cloak.]'

    You gain experience!

    You say, 'What initiate's cloak?'

Animist Poren says, 'You should have received your initiate's cloak if you presented your acrylia slate and notarized application to Elder Animist Sahdi. You can give those two items to him if you have not already and receive your cloak.'

You say, 'What are forged fasteners?'

Animist Poren says, 'Perhaps one of our smiths can assist you with the forged fasteners. I'd check the armory.'

Ask Kagazz about "Forged Fasteners". He is behind the armoury by the forge at (/loc 254, -182, -189).

You say, 'Can you make forged fasteners?'

Kagazz squints as he reads your lips, 'Fasteners you say? Show me your slate and I'll make you a deal.

Give him your Acrylia Slate of Sharl Vahl. He returns it and says:

Kagazz says, 'My wife is making some jewelry. Not the sparkly stuff, mind you. She is nearly blind so appearance means little to her. She is intent on making jewelry with a more, uhh, natural feel. Currently she's constructing a special scorpion leg necklace, and is in need of more scorpion legs. I can't leave the shop so I need your help. Fill this box with scorpion legs and I'll pay you with metal fasteners that any merchant will gladly buy.'

Collect four NO TRADE "Scorpion Leg" or four "Scorpion Legs" (these latter are marked as QUEST ITEM and are stackable). Either will work but they cannot be mixed. Combine these in the box Kagazz gave you to receive Box of Scorpion Legs. Return this to him to receive one (1) Forged Fasteners. Also note that the fasteners are NO TRADE so any merchant will not, in fact, gladly buy them as he claimed.

    Upon Turn in:

Kagazz says, 'Ahh, _______! I thank you, my wife will be most grateful. Here are the fasteners I promised you. You know ______, there was a time that young, would-be smiths would seek my approval so that they could study the ways of the forge under my tutelage. That was back when I was Master Smith, before I named Barkhem my successor.'
    You gain experience!

    Combine:

    1x Forged Fastners,
    2x Young Hopperclaw,
    1x Khati Sha Handwraps,
    In the Stitching Pack

On successful combine, you receive Primary Silk Khati Sha Claw and Secondary Silk Khati Sha Claw. NOTE: the Handwraps are lost in the combine and are not returned in a later stage of the quest.

Return both Silk Khati Sha Claws AND your Initiate's Cloak of Shar Vahl to Animist Poren. Animist Poren is at 275, 47, -258. Enter the castle (west central district), descend the stairs, and turn right. Walk through the arch and turn right again. Descend the stairs at the end of the hallway. Enter the door and take the door on your left. Animist Poren is in this room.

    Upon Turn In:

Animist Poren says "Well, you're off to a slow start, but it is a start. You will do well to accomplish your tasks in a more timely fashion. You have chosen a path full of trials, . I say again, time is of the essence. Take my seal to Mahron Sood and prepare yourself for the upcoming challenges."

    You gain experience!

You recieve: Reinforced Primary/Secondary Claws as well as the Cloak of The Khati Sha Recruit and the Seal of Animist Poren

Animist Poren shouts " Friends, I have news to share! It has taken longer than it should, but at last has completed our initiatory tasks and will now be given the priveleges reserved for the Khati Sha recruits!. Soon we hope to have this citizen ready to aid in the exploring of this new land. Please give support in whatever ways you can and trouble this recruit as little as possible, for seems to be easily distracted."

Yeah...once you get the molars which I only found on Sonic Wolves not the smaller ones, you go to someone in a library type area and get 3 tomes of wolvesbane, and talk to a guy that says you need to go get young owlbear claws for him and he'll give you the dowels you need. Haven't finished that yet...wish I heard some more about this and above this.

is it just me or is this an insane quest? i went to everfrost to work on my tailoring because i failed 4 times in the first part of making the claws after getting the fasteners and hopper claws. in the process i completed all the barb BL quests. got tunic, kilt, bracers, helmet, and fighting claws in the process. all unuseable to me cause they are barb BL only, but i did this easily. here's whats after you give hopper tails back to Rittuh. she gives you an exagerrated repot to give to kery miann. kery wants you to kill glowing shell creatures in paludal caverns. she gives you a box. combine glowing heartstone with recruit cloak. give back to her. you get apprentice cloak. she says show your claws to kaam rahiir in library. he gives you a bag and wants you to get 2 sonic pup mol;ars and bring back to him. when done he gives you claw mounts and says seek out qua and jhimis. you need to get boooks from qua and weapon kit. each costs 5+pp. 3 books, 1 kit. 20+pp. (fyi- unless you have been given locs to drops of these items you better be at least lvl 16 at this point) from jhimis you need stretching dowels. for those jhimis want you to kill owl bear cubs for claws. when finished he gives you the dowels. guess what? at this point you need parts from all over and cooperation with other classes making their own parts to finish this quest. this is the info the books give you. put all this in weapon kit and tada......i have no idea. this is worse than a dang epic quest. i will dread to see what they have in store for the epic. and all this time .. by level 10 barb BL have all their stuff and are happy and continuing on playing the game. i have seen level 20+ vah shir BL out trying to just get the pup molars. good luck all. for me i am taking a break from this insane quest. hey in the process maybe one of those mobs will drop 100k pp so you can get a horse to get around on.

After the rockhopper tail quest there is another section. You are asked to get a glowing stone from beyond the thicket (plaudal caverns?) off a hard shelled bug. You are supposed to combine the stone and your cloak in the box given. I spent about 5 hours in plaudal caverns killing the bugs. I came across a pulsating stone (lore/no drop) but not sure if this is the correct stone. When I ask people about the quest they name a "glowing muck digger" as the mob that drops the stone. I have yet to see one. Any information from someone that has done this would be appreciated.

The glowing stone drops are in the caverns. To get to the spot where they drop: From zone line from Shar Vahl take the first 3 rights. You will eventually come into a large casm with Plerg Fiends. The glowing muck digger spawns in that area on the right. I found 4 stones within 30 minutes fighting there.

So I did the same thing and can't open the box now to combine. Did you ever figure it out or did you have to get 4 moe legs and a new box?

    # Dec 24 2001 at 12:33 PM Rating: Default
Ok, I managed to find 4 scorpian legs at various merchants, put them in his box (unstacked) and clicked combine. I got the 'You can't combine those items in this container type' message, so I tried stacking them all together, but that didn't work either. Just for fun, I also tried 2 stacks of 2, but no luck there. he only thing I can think of now is that you need 4 WHOLE STACKS of scorpian legs, but that seems too extreme for a quest like this.

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated :)

Which is better for hunting HQ hopper hides, the pit or the little valley just outside the city in Shadeweaver's Thicket? I've been running a a slash&burn campaign in both places for a little over a day now. Many hundreds of dead hoppers later, I've gotten 3 LQ hides and a single MQ. Advice? Anyone?

I found HQ Hopper Hides on the Frosted Hopper (4 out of 5 time) that is part of the Whisperlings quest. It was an easy way to keep getting hides until I had my 2 straps made.

I've found most of mine off of standard hoppers in shadeweavers. I think that hide drops are a little more uncommon off the needle clawed hoppers. At lvl 9 I can pretty much run amok killing hoppers, no real xp, but the hides drop often enough.

I was running around killing all the Saurek Hoppers that I could find at level 7 & 8, whether they were Green, Light Blue, or Blue cons. Got several HQ hides, and failed in making the straps every time.

Then I went off to collect Needle Claws while recovering HPs over in the Newbie section by the tents. An HQ hide dropped from two of the Needle Clawed, very Green, hoppers.

An HQ hide dropped from a Saurek Shredder, too. On the Bestiary page for the zone, several people posted that ALL hoppers in the zone can drop any quality of the hides, including the HQ hides, but I doubted it until I saw it for myself.

    I'm a believer now.

    Registrar Faction
    # Dec 20 2001 at 4:35 PM Rating: Good
Has anybody figured out what faction to raise so that the Registrar will give you a new slate? When She gives you the first one, she says she will replace it for you if asked. Well, I lost mine and have asked her repeatedly for a new one. I always get messages to the effect that she cannot yet trust me with that information and that I must prove my dedication to her cause.

My question if "What cause?" Of course, she doesn't answer that one.

I have been trying for about 5 levels to get a new slate so that I can get a new cloak and do the weapon quest for my BL. I have killed hundreds of hoppers and beetles. I have killed dozens of Briggands and Thugs. I have killed practically everything I can find in Shadeweaver's Thicket, all to no avail. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

    Thanks.

You need Ally faction with the Registrar to get another slate. For some reason, I had Warmly faction when I lost my slate, despite wearing a faction increasing cloak and being ally to everyone else. I had to have a friend start a new BL and multiquest my Slate back... suprise, suprise, with my slate in hand, I'm ally again... Stupid quest. They should really reduce the needed faction to warmly, seems i wasn't the only one who never harmed his faction and was warmly to her....

    # Dec 20 2001 at 3:49 PM Rating: Decent
If you want to get the rockhoppers to spawn, kill everything. I'm not certain, but it seems that the worms & the rock hoppers are alternates on a timed spawn cycle with the scorpions & beetles as the place holders.

Also, the straps don't trivial until around 40 (check www.eqtraders.com for an exact number) so push your tailoring as high as you can before using those precious HQ hides (took 9 at 30 to get both of mine).

You can make silk threads until 15 & get skillups.
Bandages will take you to 21 & silk cords take you to 31.
After that I think that tailored beltpouches takes you to mid 30s.
That at least gets you close to the trivial (trivials seem to be about a 50-60% success rate for tailoring.)
    RE: General suggestions
    # Dec 28 2001 at 3:06 AM Rating: Default
Wow, I read all these posts of people having trouble with the tailoring quests and I feel like I've been running on dumb luck since level 1. I made my claws on the first try with a 20 tailoring and both of the straps I made on the first try using only 2 HQ hides total. I thought they must be trivial from the start they were so easy. All I can say is someone was looking out for me :) Crossing my fingers and hoping my karma isn't used up for the next 48 levels ;)

First off if you are making BST and have a char around 40 or higher. go to Tenebrous zone. and right inside from grimling will be able to find grimling orefinders. Kill them and get a "sturdy grimling mining pick" everyone we killed had one. is a 12/29 wt0.4 pierce weap. awesome for BST

second as far as this quest is concerned. first part is relatively easy with tailoring around 10. but for second part is a pain. I went through 10 sets of required items. what I realized halfway through is I had lots of training pts. My advice is. gather 3-4 sets of required items. while getting exp. then go to BST trainer and put as many pts into tailoring as possible(up to 20-21) then try it. If I would have done that would have saved me a lot of time. However with that pick was able to get from lvl 3 to 7 in about 3-4 hours without highlvl buffs. also in Netherbian kill mature fungoids they drop a decent MNK/BST H2H weap. they are around lvl 30. this advice is mainly for those that either cant afford or dont want to uber twink a new BST. Have fun and enjoy the game. the guy with the forge fasteners is in entrance of building just to right of arena(with back to entrance)

I guess I should consider myself lucky on getting the claws. I spent about an hour hunting the young rockhoppers under the north bridge and killing scorpions in between. After around my 10th kill I had a pack full of hides for the hide quest and my final claw for the claw quest. With a lot of praying and a skill of 21 in tailoring I hit combine and got seriously lucky as my handwraps became claws. Got my first set at the young age of 5; dinged to 6 off the exp for handing them to Poren. Now I'm off to find the HQ pelts.

I finally managed to get my claws with my beastmaster on my 7th attempt, and these only took me about 3-4 good hours of hunting them. I see a lot of people just standing around waiting for the young hoppers to spawn, but I have noticed that all the other mobs seem to be place holders for them. The spawn rate for these little buggers was significantly higher when the group of people in my area killed everything that moved, compared to when they left and I was left to kill things on my own. So get out there and kill everything you can. At least you have the opportunity to level and increase skills.

Also, I was able to kill 2-3 of the hoppers at a time, as long as they spawned close together. After attacking one and having it try to attack you, target the other one and attack it also. You double your chances of getting the claws, and usually noone will KS you. Doing this, I was able to get 4-6 young rockhopper kills each spawn.

Finally, Ive noticed a lot of people run to the guards when they are about to get killed by these hoppers. I have to say that if you feel that you are about to die, suck it up and take it. These spawns are way too rare to give it to a guard.

Ok, I just killed 63 Young Rockhoppers in the pit today over 8 hours. For the last time. That has got to be about 200+ I have killed in 38 hours I've played the game.

    No claws.

I guess I'll just have to live with my 6/30 +10hp +10 mana Horns of the Beast. Oh wait, that weapon doesn't suck at all. Hmmm. Why do I even bother. If I need it for an epic I'll just auction for all the stuff I need at 100pp per pop.

Weird that you are having so much trouble with this. Believe me, I feel for your frustration, having been through some frustration over this myself.

Unfortunately, the Khati Sha Recruit Claws... as well as the components to make the claws... are NO DROP. So, IF these things do turn out to be part of an epic, you will be out of luck on auctioning for them at any price. And that means that you will just be going back into the pit to do it yourself anyway at a later time.

This is what I did: I parked my carcass at the loc -173, +906 area, where it seems that the scorpions and young rockhoppers spawned in waves. Hang out in the same area and do not run around any more than necessary except to snag one trying to get away, etc.

There must be quite a lot of luck involved in getting these drops. I reckon I got one claw per 8-10 young rockhopper kills. So it can be done.

    Good luck to all.

The Hopper claw drops are ridiculous. I spent 6 levels in the pit and found only one claw. Since then I've spent 1 hour per play session looking for them and HAVE NOT FOUND ONE. I am level 13. Talk about sad.

Furthermore, everytime I enter Sharvahl I offer 10pp for Hopper Claws and NEVER have I had a response.

I already have secondary claws from an NPC drop. And I've got two HTH weapons (claw of the beast and stone fist). So far the incentive to do this quest is nil considering the reward.
    RE: Rockhopper claws are stupid-rare.

Ummm... you won't get a response if offering to buy rockhopper claws.. at least not a legitimate response. The claws in question are no drop. You need to kill young rockhoppers (orangish in color) and NOT the needle claw hoppers in the pit (greyish in color). These are not the same thing.

I also can't understand why some people are having ridiculous dificulty with this. When I did this quest, I found both claws inside 30 minutes. When my RL sister did it, it took her about an hour total.

I am amazed at the horrible luck some folks are having at getting these stupid claws. There is a lot of competition for them most times I am on, but they can be found.

In fact, I was able to hang around the -173, +906 area and fill the box, my stitching kit, and a backpack and a half with rockhopper claws and scorpion legs over the course of roughly two hours.

Just kill young rockhoppers while they are up and about, switching to scorpions when they are not, and then to rhinobeetles when you run out of the other two. Bashing the beetles between scorpions and young rockhoppers, I kept a little extra experience coming in and dinged 7 while still gathering the stuff for the claws quest.

I can tell you that they seem to roll through there in waves and you have to keep around that area, more or less, to see them as they "change shifts," so to speak. I have looked up from one fight to see a whole line of scorpions or young rockhoppers trooping across the pit floor before they separated off towards their individual destinations.

By the way, the young rockhopper claws and scorpion legs are NO DROP, so we have no choice but to keep slogging through the pit to get them. Sucks, I know, but what can you do?

    /shrugs

    Good luck to you all.

I went to more or less the area Warric said and got them all, but I still had to kill just about everything that moved to get them to spawn fast enough to suit me. I did not run around too much, but stayed mostly close to that area. It still took a little time, about three hours for me, but I got enough to make several tries with at the claws without having to run back into the pit more than one additional time.

I found the best way to get lot's of Young Rockhoppers to spawn to speed things up, is kill EVERYTHING that even looks like it might think about moving. Once I started a general slaughter of every scorp and beetle, I got both claws in under 20 minutes.

    Good luck
    Wolfs Bane Portion

Finished the sonic wolf pup molars portion today, and after thumbing through the tomes have realized I either got very ambitious to get this far or there is a substantial gap between the pup molar portion and the next portion of the quest as the majority of the mobs are 30'ish for the next portion (finished the molars portion at level 16)...
    Lost Animist Poren seal

I gave my Seal of Animist Poren to the wrong person. Is there anyway I can get another one without having to redo that part of the quest? I got lucky and made the claws on the first attempt and I don't think I will be that lucky again.

I gave the two straps and the two claws to Kery Miann and she kept them.

I was able to petition and get them back... but what now? If I give them back to her she will just keep them again!!

You have to give the straps along with both your starter claws. She will upgrade them.

I killed 23 young rockhoppers before the first one dropped a claw, and the second dropped within a few kills after that. Keep plugging at those young rockhoppers, they do indeed drop the claws, just not very often.
    Tailoring Skill Overrated
    # Dec 18 2001 at 10:18 AM Rating: Default
On the topic of Tailoring skill level and the (non)ease of making the parts up to the 7/28 +1+1 claws. My tailoring skill was 39 before I even started the combining for the handwraps even. Failed the handwraps the first time (obviously not trivial), and failed the rockhopper claw forged fasteners the first time too. By the time I had wasted 5 HQ Rockhopper hides I was up to tailoring 42 and finally got my second strap on 7 total hides. As I have seen stated elsewhere the trivial for any and all of these parts is incredible. And I am not sure that having a higher then (seemingly) normal tailoring skill to start off with helped to incredibly much. Luck I think is probably the greatest factor. Good Luck
