TImer

I just wanted to throw out there that I recently made a toon on the 6-7 year old PoP locked Agnarr server, and the timer there is 9 Minutes 20 Seconds. I have played since 99 and have done 5 TLP seasons, including the first. I don't count Agnarr obviously, and EQ does alter things all the time. This trivial difference in the spawn timer is so small it could just be an Agnarr thing, but Yelinak was my last TLP and it could well be 10:40:00 like it says on fresh TLP servers.

P.S. After all my years of playing EQ since the beginning I finally made a Zam account just to post this XD. That's how much I love being a main Bard. There, I've contributed to the community that has done so much for all of us!

P.P.S. Just do the Highsun if you are 56+ lol. Unless it is highly contested like on most TLPs, my success with the DZ thing has been zero and a lot of wasted hours to boot. Most likely both PH's are locked down if it's contested and you can just take over at that point, group up and sit in line. You know, the nice way to do things? If it's dead like on Agnarr, Highsun is very reliable. Took me about 8 PH tonight and it was my final piece so I was super happy!

Cheers!

Using a DZ to spawn -
# Mar 02 2023 at 10:23 AM Rating: Decent
I can confirm that using a DZ to get him to spawn - Once you spawn the DZ - zone in - run up the east wall and if he is not up - drop DZ and wait your 30 minutes and get another DZ. Took me 5 or 6 tries to get him to spawn.

HOWEVER - do NOT loot any thing or kill anything if he is not up.

I was ******** around in one of the DZ - killed something that jumped me when my Invs dropped and had looted some wurm meat for tradeskills, which then put me on a 7 day loot lockout timer :(

I thought this was just for trash mobs, however Eldrig does not count as a mini and when I did get him to spawn - no loot because of the lockout timer. Now I get to wait a week and try it again.

However the method does work, and the 4 or 5 hours you spend doing this, mostly AFK - is much better than running around casting highsun on everything trying to find the PH.

Doesn't work. Tried it tonight and got a 2.5 day replay timer

That's because the 2.5 day respawn timer went into effect last patch ... way after this person wrote this.
Different Spawn site (between volcano and lava lake)

For me he spawned between the volcano with the lava in it and the big lava lake.

He spawned after a short time killing "OLD wurms".

I thought maybe he was old and they were old, so maybe they were old mates or something.

I was the only one in the zone so maybe I just got lucky.

Get some friends that are doing other things and don't mind eating a 7day lockout of skyfire. Spawn a DZ, zone in, check for Eldrig. If not up, drop dz, wait 31 mins for replay timer to expire, and repeat. Eldrig is either up on DZ spawn (at one of his spawn points) or not. You've got about a ~10% chance to get him, so you're looking at within a few hours, and you can be mostly AFK or playing another toon during this.

If you're needing to solo Eldrig at low levels, use your fear song. Good luck.
If you have a ranger, use it for this!

At first I was just killing the SE portion of the zone, and then branched up to the NE. But after about 2 hours I just started mass killing in a giant circle with my ranger since the range on his bow is major for this zone, things are so spread out. Was nice with the bard in tow doing selos. Took about 3 hours or so I was going to known spawn locations and just killing distance to that spot, but I found just killing anything that moved was faster than tracking to different random mobs since there are so many that can be the ph. I dunno if this is related or not but I would go into the lava lakes under the lava and kill everything in the 2 bigger lakes. After I started doing that he spawned, could just be a coincidence but thought I would share.

So this was a rough one, like many others I spent countless hours killing in the zone trying to spawn Eldrig the Old. After the 5th evening I decided to park a friends account at the northern spawn point and then began the murder-fiesta. I sat them there to ensure the PH didn't accidentally wander by for good measure while I wasnt looking. If you have a good group of people with you, I recommend standing on top of the ledge over the raised up lava pool just west of the northern Eldrig spawn (About -1500,1500 on the NE corner). There is something about this area that just draws enemies to you and you will end up with a near non-stop grind. When we would get low I would run around the lava mountain and bring back mobs to the group at the top ledge. It probably took an hour and I finally got the place holder to spawn. Initially the norther PH was killed, eventually while farming mobs for xp the southern one did as well. At this point after killing the PH I started a 10 minute timer, ran back to the group and helped burn mobs for xp while the timer counted down. And every 10 minutes I'd treck back and kill the PH. Took about 10+ PHs before Eldrig himself spawned. If your high enough level and solo I recommend just pulling mobs from around the side of the mountain otherwise you tend to get overran pretty bad. Best of luck.
How to trigger spawn cycle in 15-20 minutes (+1552,-390)

The lengths you need to go to in 2022 to get this guy to spawn makes this section of the Epic quest nearly broken. After reading through so many of the comments below and trying all the different variations over many days*, this is what worked for me:

*If you follow this, you should hopefully complete this in a few hours or less if you're lucky with Eldrig's spawn (6.5% spawn rate).

Essential Songs memorized: Song of HighSun, Selo's Accelerating Chorus, and Selo's Song of Travel. Also a healing song such as Chorus of Replenishment to deal with damage taken while getting HighSun going.
Non-essential songs: Any songs that will help with fighting.

1. You'll need Song of Highsun as mentioned in many of the posts below, or a group with sufficient DPS that you can clear many mobs within minutes. HighSun is what I used.

2. Camp an alternate character, or one of your group at the bottom of the ramp to The Overthere. (This is one of the reasons I think this quest is 'broken'. You shouldn't need alts to effectively complete a quest, and the 'triggered spawn location' is beyond track range of the area you run around to generate it.) Alternative option is to place two characters at the two known spawn points referred to below. 'South': +550,-4020, and 'North': +1770, -3850. My view is that two is unnecessary as the spawns are well documented as travelling south the the OT ramp regardless of their origin.

3. With a mercenary (and/or a group with good DPS) head across to +811,+166. This is at the top right of the large, central lava pool. Use this as the bottom of your 'base camp' and run around the plateau north of that point. You shouldn't need to go any further East that -1000, or any further North than 3200, any further West than 1322. (Essentially allow yourself to be bounded to the plateau defined by the lava river that flows from the Northern part of the central lava pool.) Optimal location +1552,-390 I had a melody of Song of Highsun, Chorus of Replenishment, and Selo's Accelerating Chorus. I used Selo's Accelerating Chorus (SAC) over Selo's Song of Travel as the SAC has a two minute timer on it whereas SSoT drops immediately. This will make running between mobs much faster for you.

***Optimal Spot***+1552,-390 This spot intersects two pathing routes that one of the spawns from the 'South' Eldrig spawn point took in its very long journey around the map. Assuming that the placeholder follows one or both of these paths (not guaranteed) this seems the optimal place to Highsun/Kill mobs.

Once I got the technique down, it actually only took 15 or so minutes to trigger the spawn cycle for Eldrig. After running around and Highsunning/killing mobs on that plateau, a mob had spawned and attacked my alt on the OT ramp. I then got Selo's Song of Travel going. This invises and levitates in addition to run-fast, so you won't train mobs back to the OT ramp which would complicate things.

When you get to the ramp get Track going (distance based) and start tracking the mob before you engage it (top of the list if you're standing next to it). Then Highsun the mob and track it North until you get to one of the two spawn points. For me it was the south point +550,-4020. Fight and kill the mob there, and then set up camp. Spawn cycle is 10 minutes, 30 seconds. If the mob has killed your alt, run due south to locate it.

Spawn was rate 5 in 77 (6.5%)

(I got so much data as I had to head out for dinner Smiley: smile ) The bold logged data is when I actually got the drop item.

Following the kill, I tracked the next mob that spawned. It heads south and passed by the bottom of OT ramp confirming that is a good place to put an alt/group member when trying to trigger the mob. It then heads clock-wise following the zone wall, typically at the base of the wall. Heading West, it skirts around the south side of the Druid portal before heading north at loc -3395,+3030. It heads due north to -1600,+3100 which seems to be an inflection point for many mobs' paths. It then tracked NE to -40,1500 (in the lava lake) before doing a 180 and heading back to -1600,+3100. From there it went to -2095,+3075 (due south) and then headed to -2755,+315 where it stopped for the first time (near Vellendoor Dumont).
At this point I got aggro as I tried to update the map and un-invised myself. I reset the mob (Highsun) and followed him back to 'South Eldrig'. I lost him briefly again and found him later tracking out of the main lava pool heading NE stopping at 2066,-670. I got aggro again at that point and reset him again. He followed the previous path South, but then turned NW from the bottom of the OT ramp. I followed him to +1552,-390 where he stopped and turned around. This intersection is the best place to camp

-2755,+300

Killed around the lava pools until the PH spawned.

This was the rotation that I had:
550, -4085, -159 - a Wyvern
1770, -3850, -167- a Wyvern
1770, -3850, -167 - a mature wurm
550, -4085, -159 - Eldrig the Old

Eldrig the Old dropped the guts and nothing else today

I had a guild bard come and slaughter the zone and port back mobs. Never once in 7 hours did I see a respawn at the southern location. I did get spawns at the northern location. Once that ph was identified I killed it and sat there. The respawn time was 10 min 30 sec. Pretty much every mob type in the zone is a PH. It’s just a nightmare trying to find the right one. At level 51 I don’t have the port song and my group couldn’t slaughter the zone fast enough to find the PH. Find a higher level friend to help and then sit on it. Eldrig was only moderately more difficult than other like level mobs in the zone. Good luck out there!

Thanks to all the others that posted some tips. I decided to try to narrow down some of the details, so I focused on Btil's known pathing points and noted them on my map. I parked myself at the NW location of +5260 / +1645 for over an hour and did not see a single mob path by or even near. At most there were 5-6 mobs on tracking, too far away to path nearby.

So, I scrapped that idea and just went to the other two locations mentioned (+1290 / +355, +816 / +171) and drew a small triangle there on my map. Basically, this is the NE "corner" of the giant lava lake in the center of the zone. I killed anything/everything there while I had a druid parked at both of the known spawn points. Killing at this location got the PH to pop at the southern spawn point (+570 / -4020) closest to the OT zone line.

I then started to kill the PHs and stayed there, while watching the other spawn spot. Nothing ever spawned there (I continued to kill anything around the NE lake area just in case). After 3 PHs (a wurm, a mature wyvern, and a bottomless feeder), Eldrig spawned. I followed him for a bit to see his path, but ended up getting aggro and killing him. He made a direct path towards OT, eventually getting fairly high on the wall. He dropped the guts as expected.

Additional info:

I decided to map out the southern spawn's path. I noted some points where they stop and change direction, each time pausing for about 45-60 seconds. Unfortunately at one point I crossed paths with another mature wurm (my PH) so I think I lost track, but up to that point, here's what I can confirm:

@ +570, -4020 PH spawns and turns toward OT zone. Makes an almost straight line and halts at bottom of OT ramp
@ OT ramp, he turns west and makes a straight line to an interesting coordinate
@ 0, +2245 he stops for about 45 seconds before turning NE
@ +730, +250 he seems to cross this point twice - once going NE coming out of the lava lake, and then returning to it a few minutes later after making a triangle path through the aforementioned points from Btil ( +1290 / +355, +816 / +171 roughly)

It's after this that I lost track while taking notes. It took about 15 minutes for him to get from his starting point, to NE corner of the lava lake, where I had been killing earlier.

So, between the known killing areas south and NE of the big lava lake, the two known spawns path through each area respectively but not likely through each others. While the southern guy did enter the lake at the south shore, he didn't go beyond it (entered the lake around -311, +524). It may also make sense just to stand at 0, +2245 and wait for something to pause there.

Good Luck!

Thanks to the other posters here my wife and I were able to get Eldrig in about 6 hours. We had mage alts camped at the two spawn points and killed mobs south of the main lava pit. Eventually a chromodrac spawned at the northern point (1770, -3850) and we sat up camp killing PHs
  • a chromodrac
  • a bottomless gnawer
  • a wyvern
  • a chromodrac
  • a wurm
  • a bottomless gnawer
  • a wyvern
  • a chromodrac
  • a skyash drake
  • a chromodrac
  • a skycinder drake
  • a wurm
  • a mature wurm
  • a wyvern
  • a chromodrac
  • a mature wurm

and then Eldrig the old who dropped only his guts.

For anyone wondering if Eldrig can spawn in a dz, I can confirm that yes he can. I got him today on Agnarr after a few weeks of pulling dzs. He spawned at the northern most spawn point of the two listed below. For anyone who wants to get him this way, spam “ready” at the AoC so you can get in the second the dz is available. Eldrig or his ph will idle at the two spawn points for only about 30 seconds before they wander off. If you have patience to pull dzs every three days and not do the needle in a haystack ow hunt, I recommend this method.

On a live server, I ended up finding Eldrig essentially stuck in the large lava lake towards the middle of the zone. I could not cast on him where he was, but I did manage to aggro him and get him to follow me to land. If you're going with the mass killing method it might be worth starting with any mobs in the lake.

All the information is great here. I got him at the 550 -4000 spawn location

I highsun songed mobs until the ph popped there. I found the PH just south of the giant lava lake in middle of zone, just west of the lava river that comes out of the south side of the lava lake.

PHs:
a wyvern
a mature wurm
a wyvern
a mature wurm
a skyash drake
a wyvern
a wyvern
a wyvern
a chromodrac
Eldrig The Old

55 necro helped me 59 bard kill him, it was kind of rough barely victorious. I suggest a shaman and necro for safety in killing him.

Parked two high level pet classes at both spawn points today and then started killing everything that wandered around with a ranger. Managed to kill the PH for spawn location (1770, -3850, -167). Set audio trigger for Eldrig and kept killing to see if I could get the other PH as well.

Never did find the second spawn site PH. However after four PH at 1770, -3850, -167 Eldrig did pop.

PH that spawned were:

A Wyvern
A Wyvern
A wurm
A chromadrac
Eldrig the Old

Please remove that the skyash drake is the only placeholder as it is not.

Here is my experience of the past few days.

First off, I parked a character at both the spawn locations listed above. I had my ranger kill every skyash drake he could find. - Nothing ever repopped.
Next, I tried killing everything in the area just west of the spawns - Nothing.

Today, I did the trick of using Highsun with my bard. - After Highsun'ing probably 30-40 mobs, I got one to warp back to its spawn location around 587, -4008. It was a skycinder drake.

Every 10-11 minutes, another one would pop at this location. Here is the mob list I went through.
a skycinder drake (the one I warped back)
a wyvern
a bottomless gnawer
a skycinder drake
a mature wurm
a skycinder drake
a mature wurm
a chromodrac
a mature wurm
a wurm
a chromodrac
Eldrig the Old (only dropped the guts for me)

So, the placeholder could be pretty much any mob in the zone. It's all a matter of luck to find the right one.

Killed the PH 75 times now and no Eldrig the Old....FYI :)
Hope this helps with Killing the Place Holder or PH
# Aug 09 2017 at 12:10 AM Rating: Decent
After camping one character at the location +570, -4020 as recommended, I then set out to kill all the Skyash Drakes I could track. Eventually the entire zone was absent of any Skyash Drake. So this told me that other things needed to be killed. So went into a free for all, of killing anything that moved. Which worked and eventually the PH appeared in front of my camped character at the location +570, -4020.

Killed the PH for a while and then Eldrig the Old appeared and died at my feet. Upon its death, I stuck around in the zone and waited for the PH to appear and then I followed it to learn the path it took.

The PH will travel all over from point to point in a straight line. While it does this, it went across one area 5 times in an hour. The area is just to the north east side of one of the fire lakes. In the general area between +1290, +355 and +816, +171.

In addition the PH will do a walk around the west side of the map, up into the North West corner along the wall and then across the north side of the wall, like several other mobs. Could also just camp at +5260, +1645 on the north wall and just wait for the PH to walk by. The PH will go past this spot twice as it makes a walk in a large hook around the west and north wall, once going clockwise in direction, then comes back to +5260, +1645 as it reverses its walk in a counter clockwise direction. Obviously the programmers wanted to make things a pain, by having the PH walk in a path avoiding the middle area for a while. You will see several other zone mobs making the same path, kill them all. Could just walk the wall from +5260, +1645 in a counter clockwise direction, killing all and may get lucky if it is on this 30 plus minute walk avoiding the middle.

While camping the PH spot the following mods spawned as place holders;
a mature wurm
a old wurm
a wurm
a Skycinder
a Chromadrac
a Wyvern

While I was killing at the camp spot +570, -4020, it never once appeared as a Skyash drake, but would not say it does not, as this is Everquest.

I parked some box characters at loc +570, -4020 (north of the OT ramp), then went around with another character mass-killing mobs primarily in the Eastern and Southern part of the zone until "a chromadrac" popped at the camp. You can also do the Highsun (Bard song that force-Gates a mob) method, but due to its low range, and particular my Bard's low Wind skill, it was easier for me to run around sniping mobs with my high-level Ranger instead. I dare say the latter method is really the easiest. Almost all mobs in Skyfire are KoS and will attack even a level 100 character, so your characters at the camp will get aggro. Just remove all damage shields so you don't accidentially kill and poof the corpse while you're running around sniping.

For statistical purposes, I stayed there for a while, here is the data:

PH respawn time: 10 min 40 secs
Total mobs: 68
Total Eldrig spawns: 5
The Gut is a 100% drop rate

Can be Pretty Frustrating

So like many other Bards before me, I decided to finally try and get my 1.0 epic, because I wanna own one for collection.

One thing to note, this can be pretty frustrating to do solo, so my advice is either do with a box or a friend. What you want to do is have the box/friend to camp right at the bottom ramp of the OT zone tunnel, while the bard go around with Song of Highsun memmed. Initially I was running around like a headless chicken randomly Highsunning mobs. Just when I was about to give up, one of the posters here below mentioned something about pathing (thank you, you saved my life).

So I did abit more searching around and figured out a way to do it. I had the bard camp around loc -500, -1900. What I did was basically just Highsunning everything that came along close to this spot, because word has it that this spot is part of the path of Eldrig/PH. Your friend/box basically just needs to keep a close eye on anything that jumps on him/her. Because nothing passes by that OT ramp spot except for Eldrig/PH. However when you encounter the mob there, don't kill it right away.

Instead, have your Bard quickly load Selo's and run back to the OT ramp and then, open your Tracking skill and get the mob in your tracks. Once done, use Highsun on it and follow it back to its spawn point via track. When you run into it, keep repeating Highsun until you can physically see it spawning at its spawn point. Then take down the mob and voila, you're on your way to camping Eldrig for the rest of the day. I believe the previous posters have mentioned that there's two possible spawn points, but just getting one of the PH should suffice.

Anyway, here's a picture of Eldrig spawning at one of the confirmed spawn points:

Eldrig the Old Spawn Points

Enjoy camping!

What a miserable camp. I'm about 10 hours in at the spawn point and no Eldrig! Cleared the zone of almost everything with help of a friend, and no PH at the second location, either. I am AFKing overnight and hoping to wake up to those guts in my bags. Terrible terrible terrible.

EDIT: 70+ PHS. Finally got the drop.

Previous posters really had this down. Set a char at the +1770, -3850 spawn point, and wander around the rest of the zone killing or Highsun'ing everything you come across. As soon as you see a mob at that spawn point, kill it and then sit back and roast marshmallows. I got very lucky, Eldrig spawned on the next pop at that spot after I dropped the PH. Good luck.

Agreed!
....After camping for nearly a week!
However, This needs to be done with a box or 2 toons; park 1 at the PH spot (I got him to spawn after the 20th+ PH) north of Overthere zoneline before you get to the wizard spire (loc listed and it's accurate); 2nd toon either Highsuns or destroys zone until the PH spawns on your toon parked at the loc. The spawn takes about 10 minutes and, like I said, it took me 20+ spawns. Nightmarish of a spawn to get!!
