Yes I often carried a spit around as a lower level (pre 45ish) ranger. Even though I have the gift of forage, I did not learn how to hot key forage for a long time, plus it is one of those skills I have even yet to master.
One solution was to carry around a spit and bake my food as i went along. Carring spices and sauce while hunting mammies in everfrost during my 20s and 30s was a smart idea for me. Depending on where you hunt, and what you are hunting, using a spit can greatly reduce your down time traveling to and fro to the local town to replenish supplies.
It is also a nice way to make friends by passing them a unique food item. Numbuk the Ogre for example loves baked gnome parts :-)
As a note, the spit is a gargantuen sized item and is to large for any bag that I have found as of yet. This means that for you to carry one you must give up one of your main inventory slots in order to lug it around.
Unless, of course, you dont like to return to the city all the time to either use the oven there, or to buy more food which cost more money. I carried a spit around with me for a long time, keeping only water, stacks of sauces and spices and a spit. Eating only chunks of meat and steaks made from animal parts, I almost never went back to the city, which is most of a waste consider the time you spend running back and forth where you can't do anything.
