I my self have been guilty of givving usless items to orcs and such to mess with newbs, and to make em earn the item. It especially fun when you give the crature about 10pp and a FS weap, and when you hear the Noob shout accross the zone about his fine discovery.
Any cash and nodrop items given to an NPC are just eaten. You wasted any money that you gave to NPCs for newbies to find. Duplicate items would be removed from an NPC, (for instance if you gave an NPC 3 fire beetle eyes and killed him, he'd only have 1).
On a side note - at one time (may still work, I don't know), quest items that were not nodrop remained on the NPC after you gave the item to them. This made an easy way to manufacture as much medium and small crafted armor as you wanted, once you had one full sized piece. You give it to the quest guy, he gives you back a smaller piece, you kill him (or have your buddy kill him) and take back the piece you gave him. They may now remove quest items from NPCs when you give them, I'm not sure. Similarly, you want that bearskin cloak, but also want the HQ pelt back to make a backpack, no problem.

someone probably jusy gave a bronze collar to a orc. Sence EC is the auction capital of the world (at least on Luclin), someone probably bought a new collar, and gave their old bronze one to a orc for a newbie to loot.
