The purpose of this guide is to help players understand the difference between all the different Tech2 and capital ship types. For a basic understanding of ship types, visit the Ship Class Hierarchy Guide.
Tech2 Ships
Tech 2 ships are powerful ships. They require a large amount of skill points to fly and even more to fly well. They have bonuses based on not only the skill required to fly them but their base ship as well.
Tech2 Frigates
Covert Ops
There are two types of covert ops frigates per race.
The first type can use the Covert Ops Cloak. It's main function is not combat, but instead it's function is to act as a scout. With the Covert Ops Cloak, the ship is able to warp while cloaked.
The second type is a stealth bomber. Although it cannot use a covert ops cloak it does recieve some bonuses while cloaked. Covert ops ships have a reduced delay from the time they decloak to the time they can lock a target. They can also travel faster while cloaked and even though they are frigates, they can mount cruise missle launchers.
Assault Frigates
Assault frigates are geared for nothing else than combat. All of the bonues from the frigate and assault frigate skills on these ships increase their damage output in some way. Although they are a bit slower than their T1 frigate counterparts, they make up for it in resists and damage. These are excellent ships for running level 3 missions in when you have the proper skills.
Intercepters
Although intercepters can deal quite a bit of damage, their main role is to lock down a target. They are fast. There have been some reports of Intercepters being able to achieve 5,000m/s or more! This speed makes them very difficult to hit.
Tech2 Destroyers
Interdictors
The interdictor was created for one sole purpose. The use of the interdictor sphere launcher. An interdiction sphere is capable of pulling other vessels out of warp.
Tech2 Cruisers
Recon Ships
Like Covert Ops, Recon ships have two different types.
The first type, a Force Recon ship can use a covert ops cloak as well. They fit a bit of a different role. Instead of having a bonus to the use of scan probes, they have a bonus to some sort of electronic warfare. They also are built to use less liquid ozone when generating a cynosural field.
The second type is a Combat Recon ship. It's geared towards both damage dealing and electronic warfare. It cannot fit a covert ops cloak.
Heavy Assault Ship
Heavy Assault Ships are the big brothers to Assault Frigates. They have the same concept for for cruisers instead of frigates.
Logistics
Logistic ships augment other ships via armor/shield repairers and other support modules. They can't deal a lot of damage but they can keep the ships that do going for a lot longer.
Tech2 Battlecruisers
Command Ships
Command ships can fit up to 3 gang assist modules which really is what they're all about. They also have increased damage output.
Capital Ships
All capital ships are unable to use jump gates. They must jump from system to system using their own jump drive by locking on to a cynosural field.
Carriers
Each race has two types of carriers. One is refered to as a carrier. The larger version is referred to as a mothership. Motherships are unable to dock in stations.
Both types are powerful weapons. They are the only class of ship can that field fighter drones. Fighter drones can be assigned to other gang members who can control them. Fighter drones can also warp with whoever they are assigned to. This allows the carrier to be far away or even in an entirely different area of the system that the fighting is taking place.
Dreadnaughts
Dreadnaughts were designed soley for the siege of stations. They are the only ship that can use
Siege Module.
Titans
Titans are titans. They are quite simply, massive. They cannot dock in stations. Titans can create a jump bridge that is rumored to allow a fleet to follow it through a cynosural field. The thing that sets them apart from anything else is the doomsday device. It is capable of demolishing entire fleets all on it's own.
