This raid expedition begins with The Butler in the House of Thule. He's a zombie located inside the front doors of the house.

Pre-requisites for requesting this raid:
- Scholar Kintorom's task arc (Interview with a Scholar; History of the World, Part 2; Book of Secrets)
- The Stuff of Dreams (group mission)
- Completion of the "Tick Tock" and "Ritual of Terror" raids

Pre-requisites for participating in this raid:
- Completion of at least one of the Tier 1 raids ("Tick Tock"; "Ritual of Terror")

You say, 'Hail, The Butler'

The Butler says 'Ah, well, hello there. Is there anything I can do for you? As the butler here it is my duty to make certain that your time here is enjoyable. I'm afraid that I may not be able to do much for you, for I am [unable to leave], but I am willing to do what I can.'

You say, 'You're unable to leave?'

The Butler says 'I must remain here. Not just inside this house, but here, near the library, in case I am needed. I have no story that I can tell you, for I don't remember it. All I know it that I am bound here for reasons that seem important. Perhaps I could better serve you if you were to investigate the library. I would dearly love to know why I feel compelled to stay here. Can you please [assist] me?'

You say, 'We can assist you'

The Butler says 'Thank you. I shall meet you inside the library when you are [ready].'

You say, 'Ready!'

The Butler says 'Good.'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered The Librarian's Nightmare.

Summary

- Have someone pick up the ground spawns in the lower level of the zone, then click them one at a time to spawn book dervishes. Kill the dervishes until one drops a "Words of Opening" and then go up to the next level to the Butler.

- Hail the Butler, give him the Words, say to him "Love is the consumption of self" and then say "prepared" to trigger the next phase.

- The raid will be intermittently silenced while animated books spawn. Keep killing these. Four minutes after saying "prepared" to the Butler, you'll see an emote about reading the librarian's books.

- Have someone on the second level of the spiral staircase click the stone pedestals one at a time. For each click, you'll get either a spawn of 2-4 book dervishes (the same as the ones from the first part of the event), or one of three different stories (an emote will indicate if it's a story). Which pedestals spawn which mobs, is random.

- The three stories are Miss Muffet (kill "a spider"), the Seven Dwarves (kill 7 dwarves + 2 nameds), and the Pied Piper (kill Billy the Piper and his rats). Each story spawns in a different area of the library and can be pulled to the raid.

- The Librarian will need to be kited or offtanked while the rest of the raid kills the stories. She'll port herself to different parts of the zone, taking with her the top six players on her hatelist at the time.

- After the third story is killed, the librarian's defenses drop and she can be killed. You may need to kill her next to the Butler's location or you chance the raid getting bugged. You only need to take her to 10% to win.

Phase 1: Ground Spawns

There are eight ground spawns. These appear as books in the lower level of the library (as they appear in "The Stuff of Dreams" mission). There are two of each book:

Adventures of The Broken Skull Pirates
Journeys of Adventure
The Adventurer Vanishes
Vampire Diary

(Locations for ground spawns needed.)

There are no mobs up, so you can move around freely. You will, however, want your raid in a central location before you start spawning mobs.

Phase 1: The Book Dervishes

Right-clicking one of these books spawns 1-2 book dervishes at the clicker's location. They instantly aggro the raid. Upon spawning a set, you see the emote:

As the pages of the book are turned it begins to rip apart. Each page becomes an entire book. All those books begin to swim around with a life of their own.

Which spawns you get with which books are random. The possible nameds:

Gront Facebreak, a Sailors Life
Kingdom of the Crystalline Men
Lines of Blood
Lost on Luclin
M is for Mystery
Of Darkness and Blood
Raiders of the Last Spark
Shatterskull, a Pirates Life
Tales of Treasure
Tales of Trizza, Blood of Mayong
Temple of Doors
The Hardley Boys Mystery
The Lost Crusade
The Lost Man
Veins of the Mother
Yar a Tale of Scurvy and Gold

While some book dervishes are higher level than the others, they seem to be similar in terms of abilities. They hit for a max ~18,000 and are immune to crowd control methods. Some of them use AEs. Some of them are pure melee. If it casts a spell, it'll be one of these AEs:

Ale Belch: Directional 350', Poison (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 28000 per tick
2: Decrease Attack Speed by 150%
3: Increase Poison Counter by 30

Blood Soak: Targeted AE, Tap 0', Magic (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 30000

Flying Knife: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 30000

One of the spawns will drop a "Words of Opening" which needs to be looted. Upon looting it, you see the emote:

A warm breeze passes down the aisles of the library, like a long held breath released with a great, sad, sigh.

Once you've picked up this item, the raid should make its way up to the upper level of the library where you'll find The Butler.

Phase 2: The Turn-In & Trigger

Hand The Butler the "Words of Opening":

The Butler says 'Ah, yes. Ink from her hand. Words from her mind.'

He respawns as "Latarien, The Butler" and gives the Words back.

You say, 'Love is the consumption of self.'

Latarien, The Butler says 'Those... Those are her words. Yes, I remember now. We were together for a while. I was young. She was younger. We were promised to be married. I was happy enough, until I met Andrea. It was then I knew what love was. Like a fool, I came back here to tell her that I found another. It was the last thing I ever said to her. She, understandably, was enraged. A dark power overtook her, using her rage and dispair as fuel to its power. She trapped me here, afraid to approach me and unwilling to destroy me. You need to find her, help her. She is behind this door at the moment. I shall open it whenever you are [prepared].'

You say, 'We are prepared!

Latarien, The Butler says 'Enter at your own risk.'

A whispery voice floats through the library, "Hush!"

You can now move into the room. It's recommended you stay at the bottom of the spiral staircase, just inside the doorway.

The same cold voice says, "Unless you are here to read quietly, you should remove yourselves from the library."

The voice, now hot with outrage, shouts, "Then I shall force you to leave!"

Phase 2: The Animated Books & Silence Aura

Saying "prepared" to Latarien, the Butler, begins a 4-minute timer and causes the raid to be silenced with two auras. These are unavoidable:

Librarian's Geas: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Amnesia (Silence vs Melee Effect)

Librarian's Hush: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Silence

During this time, mobs called "an animated book" will spawn one at a time and attack the raid (they hit for a max ~18,000 and are immune to root/mez/stun). The silence aura will drop in between these spawns.

NOTE: The animated book spawns are timed. If you don't DPS them fast enough, the next one will spawn regardless if the previous one is still alive. They spawn approximately every 60 seconds.

At the end of the 4-minute timer, you'll see this emote:

The butler's voice, frail and cracking, comes wafting weakly across the library, "Do what she wants... Read her books..."

After this emote, and after any remaining animated books are killed, the silence aura drops and doesn't come back. The animated books, however, will keep spawning until the first triggered Story event in the next phase is defeated (it doesn't matter which of the three Story events you get from your pedestal clicks). It's not known what determines how many animated books will spawn. Sometimes you'll only get a total of 6-7; sometimes you'll get 15 or more.

Phase 2: Spawning the Stories & Keeping the Librarian Distracted

After you see the "Read her books" emote from the Butler, you can start spawning "stories". Do this by having someone click on the pedestals on the second floor of the spiral staircase. Make sure the raid is prepared for mobs before clicking these, as each pedestal spawns a set of mobs.

Your goal is to kill three of these stories (more details about this in the section below).

NOTE: There is a timer. Only so much time (what specific time is unknown, but a lot of time is allowed) can pass before you have to click another pedestal. If you don't keep within this timer, the event resets.

Which pedestal spawns which stories, is random. Upon clicking the first pedestal, you see:

The Chief Librarian sighs and says, 'Ah, that's nice. Good to see young people reading the classics.'

This is a tale that you have already read.

Enough of your fooling around! If you are not gone from my library in a few minutes, I shall come and remove you myself.

Chief Librarian La`Frere says 'You all, hush! You're too loud. I'll have to take you off and punish you.'

At this point, the Chief Librarian (spawned on the top floor of the library) becomes active. She doesn't aggro yet, but if you leave her idle for more than 1-2 minutes, she'll aggro on her own and attack the raid.

She must be kept pre-occupied while the raid handles the three stories. You can either keep her kited or offtank her. You can't kill her until the three stories have been handled as she is buffed with "Shield of Scrolls":

Shield of Scrolls: Self 0', Unresistable (0)
1: Increase Hitpoints by 1000000 per tick
2: Increase Chance to Reflect Spell by 100%
3: Increase Damage Shield by 500

Until the three stories are killed, she'll occasionally port herself around the zone, taking with her the top six people on her hatelist (note: she does NOT drop aggro when she does this).

The Librarian hits for a max ~22,000 (doesn't flurry or rampage). She also casts, throughout the entire encounter, the spells "Shadow of Loss", "Swirl of Pages", "Shared Pain", and "Don't Look At Me":

Shadow of Loss: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Summon Pets: HLBRaidBossSwarmPet x 1 for 15 sec

Swirl of Pages: PB AE 1000', Magic (-670)
1: Decrease HP when cast by 35000
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 6000 per tick
3: Increase corruption counter by 10

Shared Pain: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Balance Party Health (0% penalty)

Don't Look at Me: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Add Proc: Don't Look at Me rate mod 20000 (causes you to spin away from the librarian)

The Stories

The three stories you need to handle are Miss Muffet (kill "a spider"); the Piper (kill "Billy the Piper" and his rats); and the Dwarves (kill the seven dwarves, "Whiteshoals", and "Lost Love").

NOTE: The story spawn order will be random. The order presented here is just an example.

Miss Muffet

Upon Miss Muffet's spawn, you see this emote:

A muffled scream permeates the library. When it is suddenly cut short, the silence becomes loud.

"a spider" spawns in the lower level and can be pulled to your raid. It hits for a max ~20,000 and casts "Web Tether", "Snicker-Snack", "Web Tangle", and "Curds and Whey Spray":

Web Tether: Single Target, Magic (-670)
1: Slow Push (-300)

Snicker-Snack: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 40000

Web Tangle: Directional 250', Magic (-670)
1: Root
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 12000 per tick

Curds and Whey Spray: Directional 250', Poison (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 10000 per tick
2: Decrease Attack Speed by 35%
3: Decrease Movement by 45%
4: Increase Poison Counter by 30

It occasionally warps to its target (emote):

a spider leaps on its most hated foe!

a spider has been slain by _____!

The Piper

Upon the Piper's spawn, you see this emote:

The sound of reedy piping sweeps through the stacks. Distant squeeking noises can be heard shortly after the pipe sounds fade.

Billy the Piper spawns in one of the dead-ends in the lower area of the zone. He should be killed quickly, as the longer he remains alive, the more rats you'll have spawning.

Billy the Piper hits for a max ~16,000 and casts "Call of the Pipes", "Piper's Dance", and "Dark Plague":

Call of the Pipes: Single Target, Magic (-670)
1: Charm up to level 200

Piper's Dance: Targeted AE 200', Magic (-670)
1: Mesmerize (1)

Dark Plague: Area - PC Only 300', Disease (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 10000 per tick
2: Increase Disease Counter by 30

Billy the Piper says 'You look like you have some moves, _____'

Billy the Piper pipes a song that sounds like squeeks and chirps.

The rot rats are unmezzable and unstunnable. The book rats are mezzable and stunnable. The rats hit for a max ~10,000.

Billy the Piper has been slain by _____!

As a second story comes to an end, the librarian's power wanes and her defensive shield of pages falls away.

The Dwarves

Upon the dwarves' spawn, you see these emotes:

A deep voice rumbles, 'I guess it's off to work we go. I'd rather just stay here and rest.'

Another gruff voice replies, 'Aye, but then the pay is good an' we don't have to listen to 'er complainin' all day. Get off yer arse and let's go.'

Ha, ha! He, he! It's off to work for me!

This story's 9 mobs (seven dwarves + two nameds) spawn in the room immediately west of the spiral staircase. NOTE: All mobs can be split from one another. They are not tethered, leashed, or aggro-linked.

The dwarves hit for a max ~18,000 and have unique AEs. None of the mobs in this phase are susceptible to crowd control, except Leth, who is mezzable (but not stunnable):

Bones casts "Bone Rattle":

Bone Rattle: Targeted AE 300', Magic (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 32000

Chirpy casts "Happy Place":

Happy Place: Targeted AE 250', Magic (-670)
1: Mesmerize (1) (5 ticks)

Leth casts "Aura of Why Bother":

Aura of Why Bother: PB AE 200', Magic (-670)
1: Decrease Movement by 50%
2: Decrease Attack Speed by 65%
3: Increase corruption counter by 15

Mut the Mute casts "Say Nothing":

Say Nothing: Single Target, Magic (-670)

2: Decrease Hitpoints by 27000

Verecund casts "Too Shy":

Too Shy: Self 0', Unresistable (0)
1: Increase Chance to Reflect Spell by 100%

Lost Love hits for a max ~18,000 and appears to be pure melee.

Whiteshoals hits for a max ~18,000; and casts "Kiss of Sleep" and "Whistle":

Kiss of Sleep: Single Target, Magic (-670)
1: Stun (7.00 sec)
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 25000

Whistle: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Charm up to level 0

Whiteshoals has been slain by _____!

Extra Spawns

In addition to the three "stories" listed above, some pedestal clicks will spawn a set of 1-4 book dervishes (the same mob spawn table and abilities as the first phase of the event). This spawn type does NOT count as one of the three stories you need to kill.

Phase 3: The Librarian

Once the mobs involved in the three stories are all dead, you can proceed with the Librarian, whose defenses will now be down.

NOTE: The event may get bugged if you don't kill her in proximity to the Butler. To keep this from happening, fight her next to the Butler's location in the hallway.

Her abilities as mentioned above remain the same. She spawns one add at each health interval: 80%, 65%, 50%, 35%, and 20%. Adds are in the form of a random book dervish from this spawn table:

Black Blart, Pirate Legend
Cherista, Princess of the Dead
Da Shell of Hamlett
Dead Pirate Roberts
Grimbon, Agent of Scale
Heratius Grolden, Why The Wings?
Lives of Mayong Mistmoore
Ray and the Moldy Chandelier
Tales from the Island of Monkeys
Teuta, Woman or Demon
The Dread Tale, Xenithen Sterbla
The Faydwer Express
True Tales of Wendle Wizzbiggle
Valdanov Zevfeer, Blood Music

Adds hit for a max ~15,000. Most of them are pure melee, but some may cast "Blood Soak" or "Unseen Poison":

Blood Soak: Targeted AE, Tap 0', Magic (-670)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 30000

Unseen Poison: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Viral if Not Cured: Poison Revealed
2: Increase Poison Counter by 20

Poison Revealed: Area - PC Only 300', Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 15000 per tick (8 ticks)

Event Completion

Once the Librarian reaches 10%, you've won the event. She stops attacking and you'll see this unfold via script:

Librarian La`Frere, voice sounding young and vibrant, says, 'Come with me, my dearest. It is time for us to seal the bond of love we share.'

Latarien Daville, the one you knew as the butler, says, 'I... That seems best, my dear.'

They walk up to the top floor of the library where a wedding scene is set up:

a priest shouts 'Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to witness the joining of these two Norrathians in marriage. The bride has asked that the couple have a chance to say a few words before the ceremony begins.'

Librarian Dauphine La`Frere shouts 'I met Latarien here, in this very library, so it is only fitting that we be married here. I knew our love was true the moment our eyes met. This ceremony is to be the physical display of the love that we share. I thank you all for coming and offering your blessing to our joining. May Erollisi bless us and keep our love safe.'

Latarien Daville shouts 'Um... It should be clear to all present that Dauphine is a lovely woman. What man, upon seeing her would not desire her? I certainly did...'

Latarien Daville shouts 'Dauphine, I don't know if I can...'

Librarian Dauphine La`Frere shouts 'What is it, my love?'

Latarien Daville shouts 'It's just that we've only known each other for a short while, and there are things about me that you don't know. If you knew you would certainly leave me.'

Librarian Dauphine La`Frere shouts 'That's not true... why do you bring this up now?'

Latarien Daville shouts 'You... you never allowed me to speak of it before. And if I wait any longer it will be too late. You must know that, well, that I never truly loved you. I wanted you, certainly, but only for a while. I met another woman, a strong, capable woman who does not need me, but surely wants me. You are too needy, too cloistered. I can't marry you, Dauphine.'

The bride wails in grief. Gasps of shock and sobs of grief echo from ghosts in the library. Faces appear before you, hands over their eyes, mouths open in shock.

Latarien Daville shouts 'Shut up! All of you. You have no idea who I am! Or who she is! She is a harpy, a monstrosity in the garb of beauty. A vampire of the soul! She drains my life. Every moment she wants, she needs, she takes. I can't stand this anymore!'

Suddenly you see blood flying in an arc following Latarien's blade as it swipes through the air. Even as he cuts Dauphine down, you see him collapse.

A golden voice sighs through the library, 'She swore on my name, but held no love in her heart, only need. I cannot give you reprise, Latarien, for fault lies with you as well. But I can allow you to forget. Such grace, however, is not for her.'

The two would-be newlyweds are slain...

The current text regarding animated book spawns reads as follows:

At the end of the 4-minute timer, you'll see this emote:

The butler's voice, frail and cracking, comes wafting weakly across the library, "Do what she wants... Read her books..."

After this emote, and after any remaining animated books are killed, the silence aura drops and doesn't come back. The animated books, however, may keep spawning. It's not known what determines how many animated books will spawn. Sometimes you'll only get a total of 6-7; sometimes you'll get 15 or more.

After a few tests and successful runs, it was identified that animated books will continue spawning until the first triggered Story event in the next phase is defeated (it doesn't matter which of the three Story events you get from your pedestal clicks).

1. Slight delay in Librarian agroing allowed me to knock out the dwarves story without having to deal with the Librarian, so that was nice.

2. Librarian becomes damageable after 2 stories. It will let you kill the Librarian at this point, doing so will reset the event because the 3rd story wasn't killed first.

3. Would probably be worthwhile to leave a character that can solo Billy the Piper down at his spawn point ahead of time. The rats that spawn aren't a big deal, but they agro and summon, which makes running clear across the zone while off-tanking the Librarian not ideal. The rats do spawn fairly quickly too. Billy spawns at the bottom of the first dead end from the zone-in - off the "U" shaped room then down the stairs.
