In the Fish Ale pub in South Qeynos there is a man named Micc Koter standing at the bar. His companion (whose name I forget) will occasionally mumble about someone "foolish going after the Paw of Opolla". When you ask the companion about it, he tells you to mind your own business, but Micc will tell him to behave. Ask Micc about the Paw of Opolla and he will tell you it is a magical item and it belongs to "some gnoll bitch". He will offer to tell you where to find it if you buy him a brandy. I had to buy 2 to get him to talk. He then says that someone calling himself Caninel went to find it in the Plains of Karana.

Caninel is located in West Karana, along with two named gnolls, along the mountains near the border with North Karana. When you talk to Caninel, he will demand 3 gems (a Moonstone, a Bloodstone, and a Star Rose Quartz) before telling you about the Paw of Opolla. He will then tell you about how when the humans from Everfrost first met the Blackburrow Gnolls, the Shaman Opolla greeted them warmly and had her hand cut off by Gynok Moltor. She placed a curse upon the Moltor descendants, the last of which can be found in under Qeynos. He tells you to ask him about the paw and also about the rings on the paw.

When you find him (Vin Moltor), he will demand 3 Bottle of Kalish and a Rat Ear Pie for the paw. He will deny any knowledge of the rings and say that his father probably sold them, mentioning his father's travels in Odus. You can get the pie through a quest in Qeynos Hills, or you can kill him to get the Severed Paw. This is not the actual item, since it seems it is the rings that activate its magic.

There are four rings that need to be put in the paw container and combined to get the true paw: Platinum Ring, Gold Ring, Silver Ring and Copper Ring. Look for rings with a XXX: +1 CHA: -1 stat.

All four rings are known to drop from a mummy named Gynok Moltor in Befallen.

The Copper, Silver, and Gold Rings can be obtained through the Shiny Rings quest in Toxxulia Forest which involves camping a fungus mutant in Upper Guk.

The Silver Ring also appears in the lake in Blackburrow.

Need all dialogues, /loc of quest mobs, missing quest items, faction hits if any, any other missing information.

Based on the last comment in 2016, and the lack of information on Caninel (see my link), I'm guessing that this quest is no more.

Brandy is now tagged as a quest item. I noticed that Micc Koter takes 2 brandy to get him talking about the Paw of Opolla and maybe possibly this is what spawns Caninel out in West Karana for the rest of the info, which means that Bloodstone, Moonstone and Star Rose Quartz along with the Brandy should be listed as quest items for completion. There is no quest tag on the Paw that would indicate you need to hand it in to anyone else. Working on finding Caninel...
Can the Paw be gotten?

So if the guy in Karana isnt there, can you still do the quest? I am starting it now at lvl 15, but I know I will have to wait to do certain parts. Is it even worth putting the effort in or is it just broken now? I found a loc of 1397, n13541 for Caniel but I didnt see him there when I went.
I also tried the talking to Micc and gating to where Caniel should be. I waited about 20 mintues and he never showed.
So I wonder if it can still be done?

It can still be done.
It was fun doing it the long way though. I found it by accident when I was hanging out in the tavern where it starts.

You can just go get the drops and combine for the reward.

I don't believe Caninel exists any more. I wanted to run through this quest completely - start in the pub, find Caninel, find Vin, get the rings, get the Paw. I've wandered through the Karanas off and on for weeks (level 40 druid, so searching the place is fairly easy), and have never seen Caninel. Used /bug and /feedback many times over that time. The only other thing I can think of that I've not really tried seriously is that he spawns when you talk to Micc Koter. If not, then oh well, yet another old-world quest that's broken and ignored.

My freind a 40 warrior and a 43 cleric have been camping the Fungus Mutant for about 1 week.Since the cleric has a better item than this and warrior doesnt need it they would have told me if they looted the degenrated guk.So I went to camp it myself i camped it for a week and no degenarted guk!So I gave up here and went to try Gynok Molter. He spawned about 4 times while I was there. All 4 times some other person came and KS him.So for the degenrated guk I have just figured it doesnt drop at all.
losing it

I have been camping the Fungus Mutant for 2 straight days now - probably close to 20 hours and I have only come across the Bracket Mildew about 5 times. I am so close to forgetting about this whole quest except you all have said the Degenerated Guk Weed WILL COME, I don't know if I believe it at this point. I have to say if I ever see another fungus NPC after this quest I will totally lose my sanity. I was lucky with Gynok Molter - I waited for him for about 2 hours but the first spawn had the platinum ring. Someone tried to KS him but didn't succeed.

I feel your pain. I got what I needed from the Fungus Mutant in one evening, about three or four hours. However, I camped the mummy three or four hours a day for days and days and days and days. When he finally did spawn it was when I’d stepped out for a few minutes to help a friend with a transfer. Thankfully those that killed him traded me the ring for buffing their characters. The Paw isn’t usually very expensive when you can find it in the bazaar, but I must say that I’m very glad I quested for mine. It means a lot more to me than if I’d just bought it.
Aw gee Paw

I started this quest by going to Qeynos and killed all but beggars and the investigator who was lying on the ground moaning about his shorts being too tight. After about 25 minutes Vin Molter showed up on track a short distance from the zone(dark blue to my 31 Druid). Grasping and 2 Combusts made the paw fall out of his eyepatch! Then to Befallen and within 20 minutes Gynok spawned on top of me and farted dust til he croaked! Got the Platinum ring and now I am off to Guk to camp the Mutant Liberty Cap!

Vin Moltor seems to be a triggered spawn. I killed a dread corpse twice and twice i got the spawn adn the paw. The first time i dropped it and a gelatinous thingy took it tho, so i had to start over! Just kill everything in the area, he will spawn!

They simplest way to get the the Paw Container from Vin Molter is just to kill him and loot it. No need to bother with making the Rat meat pie.

The rat ear pie is trivial to me with a baking skill of 53. But baking the pie is harder. I still have not succeeded after 5 attempts. Keep getting message "You lack the skills to make this item".

I have tried to make the rat ear pie with a skill of 20. I succeded 1 out of 5 time to get the uncooked pie but it was not possible to get it cooked. so i trained up my skill to 125 in 3 hours by making bat wing crunchies, fish filets and finally fish rolls. Then i gave it another try, and it worked for me the first time. I was a bit curious abut it and so i made more. I found out that about 4 out of 5 tries were successful. So i think you might need a skill of at least 90 to craft the rat ear pie successfully needing less then 15 attempts.

The Shiny Rings Quest
# Jul 19 2002 at 1:12 PM Rating: Default
I'm a lvl 30 Druid so mostly everything in Upper Guk cons green to me. I usually camo myself and sit at the entrance that leads out to the area and set my watch to ding in 16 minutes so I know when he spawns. More often then not there is another blue drone or Breeder(rarely the breeder). So all I do is snare the Fungus Mutant which pulls the Drone who never runs away. the Fungus Mutant is so concerned with snaring me, that I can nuke the hell out of the Drone and I rarely ever get interrupted. Then after the Drone is dead, I start to work on the Mutant, nuking as usually. If I ever find myself low on hp, I am always able to cast Greater Healing on myself and start fighting again. All in all, I get one blue bubble of xp, so even if they don't drop what I need, it's still not a complete waste. I am usually drained to one bub of mana with 183 wisdom after taking on these guys, so if you have less then that, you might want to conserve it a little better. Anyway, hope that helped anybody who's thinking of starting this quest and what lvl it should be done at. Good luck to all who try. (I'm only doing this quest for money though, I'm gonna buy myself a Bone Handled Scimitar soon.)

Could i do it?

Could a 34 druid do this quest himself maybe with a lvl 40 rogue friend ? just wondering. Paw of Opolla seems like a much better item than Skull of Jhen'Tra ( 20+mana +3 sv magic )
RE: Could i do it?

Its possible to do this quest solo at lvl32 and wis > 130. I started camping the fungus mutant wich is the most difficult part of the quest at lvl29 with a lvl27 war friend and it was very easy. I didn't get lucky with loots and spawns so it took me about 10 hours of camping the fungus and 12 hours for gynok moltor so you should calculate a lot of time of just sitting and waiting when you decide to do this quest. Thats the main difficulty of this quest: "Not to get rid of it before it is finished" .

can you just kill the guy, get the container, drop the rings in, and poof, you have the paw? It seems as though you can, and considering the firepower of a 46 wizard and 46 druid... he would probably go down quickly.

I have checked the Sewers around the investigator and Bait Masterson at least ten times with no joy. Have run around killing all the trash in the immediate area in the hopes of getting him to spawn for aprox. 45 mins at least 10 times. Is he that ultra rare or am I just that unlucky, Rat ear pie is starting to look tasty to me.

I fear I too am having problems finding Vin Moltor. This has been my first true quest in EQ. I could have bought the Paw, but I thought it would be more fun doing the quest. And it certainly has been a learning experience. Days and days of camping Gynok, two days of killing the Mutant Fungus and the frustration of looking for Melixis on the wrong island. But with all my items in hand, including the three bottles of Khalish and the rat ear pie, I headed into the Qeynos aqueducts. Two days later and I still haven’t found Vin. I had thought this would be the easy part of the quest. Obviously I was wrong. Hopefully one of last patches hasn’t broken his spawn. I spoke with someone else who’s been searching for him and she hasn’t had any luck for many days. *shrugs* I’ll continue killing the critters that spawn in the same area and hope for the best. At least I don’t have to fight the specters that are also down in the aqueducts; they con yellow and red to me at 33.

Just a short update. I finished my quest last night and now have my Paw. Vin is indeed a triggered spawn. I spent about an hour killing rats, bats, spiders, cubes and other low level critters that spawn right around Vin’s spawn spot, as listed on the map from EQAtlas, and he finally appeared. The first thing that spawned was a beggar, which I’d not seen before. I left him alone and continued killing the vermin. About fifteen minutes later Vin spawned. I didn’t see him at first, but he spoke and I saw his dialog on my screen. A quick search and a hail later and I was giving him his rat ear pie and bottles of booze. He gave me the paw container and we were both very happy. So though you may think Vin’s spawn is broken, just keep killing things in that one area and he’ll eventually spawn.
