You say, 'Hail, Hager Sureshot'

Hager Sureshot says 'Greetings, ______. Feel free to rest here in Surefall Glade. Just be sure you do no hunting whilst here. If so, then you shall pay the punishment of death. I trust you [will abide by the laws]?'

You say, 'I will abide by the laws.'

Hager Sureshot says 'That is wise. Your health, for now, is assured. A plague of hunters has infested our land heavily in recent weeks. The word is out that [Mammoth] still lives. Hunters have flocked here in search of a trophy or profit and glory. Instead, they find the deadly accuracy of my arrows.'

You say, 'Who is Mammoth?'

Hager Sureshot says 'Mammoth is the great bear of the caves. [Tunare] has blessed our home with Mammoth's presence. It is said that when the great bear dies, so too shall the Jaggedpine. He would be quite a trophy to some hunter. And quite profitable to a poacher. Even the infamous [Talym Shoontar] has tried his hand at the hunt.'

You say, 'Who is Talym Shoontar?'

Hager Sureshot says 'Talym Shoontar is a poacher. He has eluded us for quite some time. He has organized parties of poachers to plague our forest as well as others. He hails from Halas, but I have heard he now calls the Plains of Karana home. I have placed a bounty upon his head. Do you [wish to collect the bounty]?'

You say, 'I wish to collect the bounty.'

Hager Sureshot says 'That's the spirit!! Spoken like a true Protector of the Pine! Last I heard, Talym Shoontar was hunting in the Plains of Karana. He has also been spotted running to and from Qeynos. No doubt he is selling hides to some merchant. End his life of hunting. Bring me his head to collect the bounty.'

Talym Shoontar appears in Qeynos Hills by the West Karana border and heads down the road toward Qeynos, pathing past the guard tower. If attacked in Qeynos Hills, the guards will assist him and attack you. Shoontar will also appear in Freeport at the docks, in place of the dwarf you give the Tumpy Tonics. When he appears here, he is often killed by someone wanting to force the dwarf to spawn, so you can sometimes loot his corpse by asking the person who killed him for the head (called a barbarian head). He appears in Surefall as well.

Hand in the head:

Hager Sureshot says 'His days of hunting are over. In the name of the Protectors of the Pine, I offer you this reward. If you are unable to make use of it, you may sell it. I suggest you hold onto it. If you are a ranger it will come in handy.'

Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine has been adjusted by 20.
Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow has been adjusted by -3.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 5.
You gain experience!!
You receive 11 silver from Hager Sureshot.
You receive 6 gold from Hager Sureshot.

Need /loc of quest mobs, list of quest rewards.

he was easy to find in Freeport but randomly I saw him walking in Qeynos Hills from the merchant house towards the city of Qeynos.

I've only seen him in Qeynos Hills once, when I was way too low a level to fight him.
However, now that I'm at his level, I'm camping him out by the guard tower.
So far, I've worked out that Isabella Cellus (level 38) is probably his placeholder, as she paths exactly as described here.
EDIT: Same for Sir Edwin Motte (level 33).

Klling Talym in Qeynos Hills
# Sep 17 2002 at 11:13 AM Rating: Decent
Killing Talym Shoontar in Qeynos Hills results in the following negative faction adjustments:

-Karana Residents
-Guards of Qeynos
-Priests of Life
-Knights of Thunder

Although this is one of relatively few quests that raises Protectors of Pine ( on turning the head in ), the only faction 'corrected' by turning the head in is Guards of Qeynos.

Aha!
# Jun 19 2002 at 5:36 PM Rating: Default
Aha! Found the quest at last-I had a barbarian head rotting in my bank for quite a while.

I was sitting in the tavern of east freeport once with my pally friend for company, yammering on about the freeport militia (and waiting for one of her soulfire quest mobs to spawn so she could do the turn in)

Anyway, I got bored, and decided to see what quests were possible in that dank, deary place. So I hailed just about every patron, barkeep and potted flower in the area-then I meet this guy.

I knew it was a ranger-ish quest at once, since he mentioned someone from surefall glade, but I wasn't sure what it was for, exactly. Then he made some comment about my fur.(ooc: was in WF) Now, NOBODY makes comments about my fur, especially how much it would sell for. So I bit his head off and kept it in my bank with my collection of 'people who admire my fur too much'

Took great pleasure in removing one of the dregs of society, for a while at least.

Roleplay Demands It
# Feb 26 2002 at 12:46 PM Rating: Excellent
I enjoy the roleplay aspect of this game more than simply gaining levels and loot. So, when I was helping a young pally find her way back to qeynos after venturing too far into the Karanas, I was thrilled to see this foul poacher's name on my track. Me being a lvl 19 ranger, with a lvl 8 pally in tow, caught up with him near the marker in QH. Short fight, but a great feeling of success after slaying one who is responsible for the needless murder of so many of Norath's gentler creatures. It is a great pleasure to know that I have made a small, and I'm sure temporary, contribution to the world.

Elianore,
Ranger of Surefall Glade

-May Karana ever rain gently upon your head-
RE: Roleplay Demands It
# Mar 08 2002 at 9:11 PM Rating: Default
It is good to see one who plays her role as a ranger. I decided that I wanted to hunt poachers simply because I wanted to BE a bonified ranger, and hunting poachers is something that Rangers do. I could have gotten much better XP from hunting gnolls in BB (I gained 2.5 blues at lvl8 through handing in 32 fangs to Tillin ;) ), but hunting these guys I thought would be more fun than having a whole zoneful of gnolls being trained on my poor ranger's @$$. I think it is fun to play a role. I remember in Blackburrow one time, one of my group members got attacked by a black bear, and he killed it. I freaked out over my poor friend and started crying over his body. I thought about disbanding, but good groups are SO hard to find in BB, so I forgave him (after all, as Karana's rain falls to the earth from the great skies, we all sometimes fall from grace) and continued to hunt with them.

Well, that is my two cp, and one word to those who are like myself and friend Elianore; keep it up, my fair Guardians!

Human Ranger of the 9th promotion,

Ferna
You're sort of right
# Sep 12 2001 at 1:26 PM Rating: Excellent
You gain most of your faction back by turning it in, my ranger faction jumped a con level after I turned the head in, and the loss of faction is fairly low. He isn't all that hard to beat, actually. The loot sucks, but the exp isn't bad and it's a good way to get ranger faction. Lysithea, he said to tell hager hello because he knows hager is after him and he is trying to antagonize hager.
Not a useless quest
# Aug 23 2001 at 9:43 AM Rating: Default
This quest is not useless, as so many people seem to think. It is one of the few ways to raise faction with ProtectorsOfPine. What I'm wondering is, how good does your faction have to be in the first place in order to turn the head in?
#Anonymous, Posted: Oct 20 2001 at 6:28 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It is useless if you already have good faction.

In Freeport
# Jul 17 2001 at 12:44 PM Rating: Default
I killed him yesterday in Freeport at level 20. Somewhat pathetic actually; single hits for only 30 damage? Made me laugh, and wonder if all barbarian NPCs are this weak, given the nature of Puntar Sandfisher. Eh, whatever. I may end up turning in his head, but its such a long ways away, I think I'll just keep it and say I'm carrying a barbarian's head around. Anyways, my point is this: killing him in Freeport is most likely MUCH easier than killing him elsewhere. I noticed first of all that the pathing is not great there, I ran through the little building before the docks and had to wait a bit for him to show up (was SOWed). I proceeded to smack him around in front of the guards (many guards, at least 4) and there was no ill effect. I then trained him over to the front of Ikthar's Armor so I could show a guildmate this barbarian that had so offended me. I finished clubbing him to death, and got experience, 10 silver, and his head. Good experience, actually, I was surprised. Anyways, hope that helps someone out here.

I was a level 5 Ranger, talking with a friend of mine who was a level 30 Ranger behind the waterfall in Surefall. We happened to track Taylm, and figured we would see what the quest is like. He let me turn in the head, the exp was good (at level 5) and I got a wooden shield. Now, this parhaps is good for a level 5 ranger, but if you have to be level 15+ to kill him, it doesn't seem worth the time.
Sureshot's a cheep SOB
# Apr 16 2001 at 8:59 PM Rating: Default
I managed to kill Talym halfway through my 15th level. He con'd yellow to me. (He's allways kindly to druids and rangers as far as I can tell. Thinks it's funny to tell you to mention that you met him to Hagar Sureshot.) I took him down by snareing and shooting with my bow. It took 93 arrows and a bit of sword work. I only took a few damage and it healed by the time I finished the fight. I wasn't near any guards so I don't know if they try to help Talym or not. I killed him a second time in the caves behind the waterfall in Surefall with help from a friend.

The first time I got 6 gold, 6 silver and a large sack. (Not even a weight reducing sack, damnit!) The second time I turned in the head I got 4 gold and a low level spell. (Minor healing I think it was.) The experience I got for turning the head in didn't even show up.

Not an easy kill, not much exp for killing him either. (A gnoll guardsman gives more exp at 15th level) Maybe if he was mobed by a group of 9-12th level characters it would be worth it.

I killed thi guy at 16th in some bar in Qeynos. I was so excited to find him, thought "finally I'll be able to do Hager's quest and get something cool!" Yeah, right! Almost died killing the freak, dragged my broken body back to Surefall, reached into my pack, handed the bloody head to Hager, and what do I get? "Thanks! Have a RUSTY SPEAR!" What crap!

Four good guilds went down, some of them are priests of life, knights of truth, and the other two were Surefall glade ones! I believe they went down a whole con point, from indifferent to apprehensive.
