Korah Kai is located at +1001,+1948,+32.88 in Hollowshade Moor. She's on Find (Ctrl+F).
You say, 'Hail, Korah Kai'
Korah Kai's ears perk up as you greet her. 'Oh! An adventurer! Just the type of person I could use for my work. Tell me, what do you know about [conservation]?'
You say, 'As in, the conservation of mana? I've heard of it.'
Korah Kai snickers at your response, 'No, silly! While that is also an important study, I'm talking about the conservation of our lands. Nature conservation falls within the realms of the gods, but even they can use some help from time to time. We only have one Norrath and we need to make sure it remains here for future generations. Part of this effort involves basically, well, stalking animals without them spotting you and seeing what they do. Recently, I discovered during my last outing that the [owlbears] that I have been documenting have decreased in numbers greatly from their nest. I believe that they have started a migration.'
You say, 'Owlbears you say?'
Korah Kai gives you a wink. 'Yes! Owlbears! Everybody loves owlbears. Two things that I have observed with owlbears is that they primarily nest on Luclin, and they almost have a supernatural charisma about them. Nobody hates owlbears. Even poachers who have endangered their existence in the past have a strange respect for them that you wouldn't see with any other exotic creature. Because of this, owlbears nest in extremely secluded places. Their packs also excel in obfuscation, which is what makes them so elusive. There have been events on Luclin that have unearthed an ancient owlbear spirit. Ever since then, the owlbears of Luclin have grown [restless].'
You say, 'Restless? Do you think they changed their behavior because of this event?'
Korah Kai gives a nod. 'I do. I think with this release of this spirit, their temperament shifted from being very docile to-' she pauses to try to find the right words, '-well I can't say "aggressive," but they seem more ambitious. Owlbears are also considered a "capstone species" as they are an indicator of what is happening to the wildlife around them. If things are becoming unsustainable for the area, they are one of the first species to find a new place for food and shelter. Luckily, not all of them seem to have migrated this time. This being the [first migration], I suspect they understood that sending everyone to find a new home may not be a good idea. Fascinating creatures!'
You say, 'If this is their first migration, where are they going?'
Korah Kai smiles. It is clear this is something she loves to talk about, especially with new people. 'I'm so glad you asked! That is a wonderful question. Some avian species have a sort of [magical compass] that causes them to migrate to other locations far away from their home even without having been there before. It's a natural instinct. Typically they do it to take advantage of changes in climate and food resources. Some even migrate just like one would to a vacation home or how adventurers "migrate" because they do not like being in one place for too long.' She chuckles.
You say, 'Magical compass?'
Korah Kai says, 'With this being Norrath, there can be a multitude of reasons for why creatures do what they do. It's important to understand our actions can cause great peril to some creatures. For instance, there was a strange blast of energy that blasted off of Norrath some time ago, and it caused entire shrieker populations in the Paludal Caverns to start crying out for days. This made it easier for their natural predators to find them and many colonies were wiped out. This upset the natural [balance] and had devastating consequences.'
You say, 'What happened after the balance was upset?'
You have been assigned the task 'Owlbear with Me for a Moment'.
Korah Kai says, 'There simply wasn't enough food and many of those predators who gorged themselves ended up starving to death. It took some time and the work of many druids to restore the balance there lest the problem spread. With all this being said, I implore you to track down the pack of owlbears and find out where their new nest is. I would suggest that you search the paths leading to nearby locations for any clues for which way they could have went.'
The moonquake that shook Luclin has caused more than just a ruckus for the inhabitants of Shadow Haven. The owlbears have started a migration that they have never done before. Korah Kai has been observing the owlbears in their natural habitat and this behavior is new to her research. She has tasked you with tracking the owlbear migration across Luclin and locating where they could have gone.
1. Locate which way the owlbear's migration went first 0/1 Hollowshade Moor
Norah Kai has asked that you attempt to locate which direction the owlbears started their journey. Look near this area's entrances and exits for any clues as to which way they could have gone.
Head toward the northeast cave leading to Grimling Forest. Right before the cave entrance are patches of fur, click one of them.
You located a piece of owlbear tuft near the direction of the Grimling Forest. Bring this to Korah Kai for inspection.
2. Return to Korah Kai and give her what you found 0/1 Hollowshade Moor
Give the Cold Owlbear Tuft to Korah Kai.
You offered 1 Cold Owlbear Tuft to Korah Kai.
You have been given: Owlbear Migration Samples Pouch
Korah Kai smiles warmly as you hand her the tuft. 'This dander is what the owlbears leave behind when they are going through various stages of their molting. Many avian species also have a "winter coat' that they have to deal with every season. In this case though, they are still doing that even while migrating. That is fascinating to know. So we know that they will leave their debris near the exits/entrances of different locations along the way of their migration.' She thinks for a moment before continuing. 'Well, where did they go after the Grimling Forest? Oh adventurer, I must ask you to continue your search and see if you can find where they ended up. Here, take this pouch so you can gather any more dander you may find. I will need you to collect all sorts of gross things. Conservation can be a bit disgusting at times but worth it for understanding our world.'
3. Locate the next leg of the owlbear migration 0/1 Grimling Forest
Clearly the path shows that the owlbears went to the Grimling Forest, but where did they go after that? Look for clues for which way the went next.
Head toward the northeast cave in Grimling Forest leading to Tenebrous Mountains. Right before the cave entrance are feathers, pick one of them.
4. Track where the owlbears went next 0/1 The Tenebrous Mountains
You realized that there is only one direction the owlbears could have gone from this location, and that would be toward Katta Castellum.
Head toward the Katta Castellum entrance in the center west part of the Tenebrous Mountains. Wizards and druids may want to use their evac spell to get there faster.
You can almost smell the owlbears. They have gone into this area but clearly they could not have gone the same path you are following. They must have found a different path around Katta Castellum, but still went in that direction. Follow them through and see if you can catch up with them on the other side of Katta Castellum.
5. Continue to follow the owlbears 0/1 The Twilight Sea
The owlbears seemed to have gone to the Twilight Sea. From there, find out the next leg of their migration.
Head toward the castle where the portal to Fungus Grove is. Before the castle, around /way -1065,+228,-22 you'll find Warm Owlbear Droppings, pick one of them.
The droppings you found are very fresh. The owlbear migration must be close by. You are thankful that Korah gave you a pouch for this. It's clear they couldn't have gone this way, but they somehow may have gone to the Fungus Grove. Follow their trail.
6. Discover the next stop for the owlbears 0/1 The Fungus Grove
Head to Fungus Grove through the portal at the top of the castle. Once inside, go straight away, down, and a pick a Moist Owlbear Down on the bridge around /way 1977, 1728, -122.
You pick up the pinions and they are not only warm but still damp with the oils that owlbears use to waterproof their bodies. You look up to see in the distance that there is a nest of owlbears settling in, unbothered by the surrounding creatures. You feel it best to keep your distance and return to Korah Kai with your findings.
7. Return to Korah Kai and tell her where the migration ended 0/1 Hollowshade Moor
You say, 'Hail, Korah Kai'
Korah Kai says, 'Conservation is everyone's responsibility. There is only one Norrath. I intend to remind people of that.'
You say, 'The migration ended in the Fungus Grove'
You have been given: Cold Owlbear Tuft
Korah Kai says, 'Of course they would choose that place for their final nesting spot! It's safe, secluded, and they already have a relationship with the critters who call that cave home. Thank you for tracking their migration pattern. I can use that information for my own further studies. Speaking of which, let me give you back this tuft and if you could secure it with everything else inside that pouch I gave you, I would be grateful.'
8. Secure the pouch for Korah 0/1 ALL
Inside the Owlbear Migration Samples Pouch, combine Fresh Owlbear Pinions, Warm Owlbear Droppings, Moist Owlbear Down and Cold Owlbear Tuft.
You have learned the recipe Secure the Owlbear Samples pouch!
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Secured Migration Samples Pouch.
You secure the collections in the pouch. Much to your delight, there was a small container with cleaner to wash your hands afterwards. Everything is in place now. Return the pouch to Korah.
9. Give Korah Kai the pouch 0/1 Hollowshade Moor
The migration pattern of the Luclin owlbear has been documented for future years. This information is useful for remembering our actions can alter conservation. Though it seems that Korah has another task for you.
Korah Kai takes the pouch and examines its contents, ensuring everything is in order before speaking. 'Perfect! Thank you adventurer! You don't realize now, but the work you did here today will help shade the understanding of these wonderful creatures for centuries to come. I will continue my observations into their changing behavior.' She has the largest grin you've ever seen someone have while talking about owlbears. 'I can't wait to get this documented! I may have more work for you if you think yourself brave enough.'
The next task in this series is Rathe Day: Softer than Othmir Fur
