We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

One evening

I did the whole quest in one evening with my 46 druid(don't worry, I love to do this sort of quests, and I am going to give it away for free), it was fun to visit all those old places again.

I was very lucky in the Keep and Najena, both items on the first drop. In Unrest the 4th Crazed Ghoul dropped his, and they spawn like mad there. I was in the backyard, indeed there is one spawning in the wall(you can just see him) but there were also two spawning on the ledge outside along the little river there.
Butcherblock, about 1 in 6 Goblins drops the Blade of nobility(both normal and crazed gobbies). In Najena I went to the room behind the room where you encounter the first Ogre Guard sitting on his butt. Walk past him, and you'll come to a dead end room with a Skeleton (and a terror) in it. Bingo first time.
The Keep, I went to the Lookout room(see map) and a normal Goblin dropped the scroll! SO they drop em also. Very easy kill also, I'd say about 700-800 hp.

Good luck!
ok its not broken but bugged

This quest is bugged not broken.I just finished it.This is what I found out. There is a bug with the npc to the quest aka multiple spawns and the fact that they will despawn. Also noted in another post the npc have a hard time giving what you need to go to the next npc.The way around these buges are as follows the true spawn of kanthuk is the farthest west as the shore turnes into a hill the true spawn of Llara is in the water on a rock out side of unrest zone (loc neg 1500,neg 800)the true spawn of Ruathey is at the end of the cave that leads to nek in lava(coming from nek)any of the spawn will take the item and start the dialoge but the fake spawn will despawn at that moment you can then finish it with the true spawn(that will spawn a soon as the fake despawns)also if you are at the end of the dialoge and they will not finish after you ask the last question move as close as you can to them. seems as if they will not give up the goods unless the can smell your breath.I asked both kanthuk and llara there last phrase need like 10 or more times and it did not work till I steped closer to them.I had no trouble with ruathey as when i spoke to here i stayed right on top of her HEHE kind of liked those boobs in my face HEHE and yes a non pally can do this quest i finished it with a druid
Not Broken
# Jun 02 2001 at 4:45 AM Rating: Decent
Just helped my Paladin friend finish it. Each item was won with a small group of 2 to 3 low-30's characters. We got experience, and it didn't take too long for any of them.

First ButcherBlock goblin dropped it, and the 6 or so did also.

In High Keep we found crazed goblins in the War Room and the 2nd or 3rd dropped it. Combined to get the GB right there in the room!

GB proc'd 152 against a skeleton in BB when we ported back later to test... Nice!

Has anyone managed to complete the quest as a non-paladin???

I hope no non-paladins go after this quest! Enough farming goes on as it is. Tried three times to get ghoulbane in Guk but found it camped each time. Once was by a group that didn't even have a paladin in it. Talk about being angry...

Since this quest consists of mostly very common drops (most of which aren't needed by people who are killing those things anyway), non-Paladins doing the quest doesn't take away from any Paladins who also wish to do the quest or camp Guk for it. My enchanter is doing the quest for a Paladin friend (who is level 38 btw, not like he couldn't do it himself, he just doesn't have the time for it), and anyway, I enjoy doing quests regardless of their reward or "Best Class" because of the storylines behind them, and I Roleplay when possible.
Also, the relative ease of this quest [especially for druids/wizards who can just gate around] means the price on Ghoulbane will come WAY down for Paladins who are too lazy to quest it themselves. Either way, it's a Paladin-only sword, Paladins can only benefit from people doing this quest.

Man I soo hate it when people farm that thing, I was in Guk with my pally and an entire group of warriors...I didn't even get the ghoulbane they made me roll for it. And the rest of the group didn't even want to camp it for a second drop.

Well now it is another paladin quest. That is it is broken already. I gave the note to ogrebane and he answered all the questions untill the very last one where he was supposed to give the pendent. Silence. I did it 3 times to make sure. There was also a visual anomoly that a gm fixed as a result of my petition. But of course the petition resulted in the standard "I will make a note of it and it will be looked into. I am warmly faction to ogrebane. Ps what is kinda funny is ogrebane stands next to the guy with the broken chalice of conquest quest. haha twin broken paladin quests. also isn't it interesting that so much travel is inviolved, making this yet another quest that a caster class can do faster and easier so all us paladins can buy our equipment form them at infalted prices in EC

Were you targeting Ogrebane? I noticed that he responded to all of my queries when I spoke to him without having him targeted except for the statement which results in him giving the pendant to you. When I targeted him and tried again, it worked fine.

I managed to get the hilt from Najena before I went to work today, and camped in the basement in Highpass. I logged in tonight, and found that my guild leader was fighting goblins with her group.

Not thirty seconds later she yells for help over guildsay because she and her group were in trouble. I rush down there, and one of the mobs beating on them was a crazed goblin! I saved her and her group by killing the goblin, and he had the scroll! The last piece I needed. :) It literally was not five minutes from the time I logged in to the time I got the scroll. :)

Now I have my own honorably quested GB that wasn't either a gift, a purchase, or pried from the flippers of a froggy paladin. :)

BTW, the Ghoulbane is the same as the dropped one, and all four quest items are NO DROP.

A few notes
# Jun 01 2001 at 1:58 PM Rating: Good
This is an awesome quest. I helped a friend with the first part last night.

We have the idea that some of the story will not be told to non-paladins. I personally received the note from Ryshon, but couldn't get the pendant. A warrior in our group got both the note and pendant, but couldn't get the 2nd note.

BTW, the note from Ryshon is LORE NODROP, as is the pendant from Kunthuk. I believe the note from Llara is also, but I didn't see it for myself.

Don't let more than one member of your group do the quest, and try to do it quickly. We found that for each letter given by Ryshon there was a new pop of Kanthuk Ogrebane.

When we first found Kanthuk, there were two of him. We tried everything we could think of, and finally determined that the northmost one would respond and take the note, but he would then go no further; no speech or responses to hails.

Then another appeared, and there were 3 Kanthuk's standing as one, arms waving in different directions.

So since he was obviously demonized, we killed him. No faction hits; no aggro from the "other" Kanthuk who was standing right with him; some exp. Lots of hitpoints, but fairly easy fight for a 30 Paladin.

No luck. Killed another one. Finally the last remaining one starts talking and tells us what we need to know, and gives us the pendant.

BTW, I later learned that just talking to Ryshon doesn't spawn Kanthuk. You have to actually receive the letter. Since the letter is LORE NODROP, make sure you don't already have the letter if you're trying to make him spawn.

We found Llara swimming (!) beside the small pointy rock island just off the coast next to the Unrest entrance. Gave her the pendant under the water, and she popped up onto the rock. Tried to talk to her and got no response for a long time.

Finally out of the blue she started talking, and we went through the story and gave us the amulet. Afterwards, she wouldn't respond.

We found Rauthey way up high on the wall to the right of the zone entrance as you come into lavasotrm from Nektulos. As soon as we gave him the note, he vanished and appeared on the ground on the left side of the canyon just past where it opens up. Finished his side of the story and got the bag without further incident.

That's what I know.
My friends why not solve it completely?

Hi there. I know vert is knows most of us are power hungry loot hungry people and would only care about a quest to it's reward. While Ghoulbane is obviusly a ojective, and central in this quest... I've read the Quest lines, and therse ohhh so juicy. Most Paladins know that us Paladins LOVE Deep involved Quests, and I care not for the Ghoulbane But I must know! What happend to Amstaf? Sure ok, maybe the Lord in Upper guk found his holy blade in the ruins there. But what about Amstaf? I must know, I know he gave up himself for the young lady love of his, who wouldint. But What happend to her after? and what happend to him? *Roleplay* I swear by all the Spell and Blade of Marr that I shall find those robed Beings and Chop them to peices if they have brought harm to a brother Paladin. *Roleplay/off*. And what of the young lady? I bet you'll find at least two new spawns in the lands or planes if this quest does continue. The lady, and the lost Amstaf. Hey i've herd the Amstaf name from before the path long long ago. Dont remember where though. Humms and humms. Perhapse well find the spawns in the up coming Expansion, or in the suposid new plane that will connect to NK. Humm i'd do the quest, just to turn in the ghoulbane to the lady barb that gives you the bag. Of course this will not do anything since in the start of the quest it says "Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhapsa you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man." I've learned abit of tragic outcomes of the NPCS involved in Quests. It's no dout that our friend the Paladin Amstaf is long since dead. His demise is a sad loss to all those who share his storie. But As Paladins we would be proud to hold his blade and continue to Wage the war against Evil... And i'm sure ShadowKnights will be more than happy to laugh on Amstafs grave as they turn in his blade to be corrupted for there epic.

I am impressed if this quest works Verant actually managed to put together a balanced quest that is do-able at an appropriate level. When I was first told that GB was now questable I dispaired figuring it was like too many other quests, especially for paladins, ridicoulously difficult, requiring level 50+ to do solo or major guild raids and what not. I hope I'm wrong, and I get to save 1kpp!

Not that hard to raise pally faction. Orcs in EC, goblins to get into Kala, bandits for their sashes in WK. Dunno about the erudites, but the rest can be raised.

Just a few questions...

1) Do you have to do the rest of the quest, first? Or can you cut to the chase?

2) What faction is the NPC that gives you the bag?

3) For the Shadowknights that need a Ghoulbane, will she drop the bag if killed?

The loc of Ryshon in WK is neg 4200, neg 15100.Tried it on Bert and when i gave the letter to Kanthurk Ogrebane he said his part I got exp and then he despawned. So I did it again. This time he stayed around so i could ask what i needed to got the pendent and again he despawned.Ran into a 36 Pally camping the goblins in BB who was nice enough to let me loot the blade. He didnt know what it was for so I gave him the lowdown on it.Said he thought the goblins were under conned and that the blade droped every 3 kills or so.Sure enough the third kill had it.I hung around and buffed and healed him for letting me loot.Everybody loves a druid HEHE,and before i get flamed I sarted this quest with my pally and when i had to get the note again I changed to my druid(he can make the trip faster than my pally if you know what i mean)I am afraid to turn the pendant in fear that Llara will despawn to then I have to do it all again. So to all that try this quest bewarned it maybe bugged

Just a comment on the frequency of the drop... we killed about 15 goblins, (5 full spawns) before the blade dropped. So it is an uncommon drop... congratulations on getting it on the third kill though!

Additionally, I did not have Kanthuk Ogrebane despawn until he gave me the pendant. He and the subsequent two NPCs, Llara and Ruathey, all despawn when they give you their respective items (note and/or bag).

The goblin camp is actually around neg 1200, POS 1500, not -1200/-1500 as previously posted. There are three spawns here which are randomly 'a goblin' or 'a crazed goblin.' All generally drop ringmail (mantles or boots) or finesteel daggers, and either the normal goblin or crazed goblin can drop the blade (which looks like the stem of a candlestick from the Sarnak fortress).

There are 3 crazed ghoul spawn-points in Unrest... two to either side just inside the double doors on the porch, (on the mansion's side), and one near the back door. The latter actually spawns -inside- the wall, but you can see him enough to target and pull if you go outside towards the water, and look back at the entryway. Normal ghouls can also spawn in these locales ('normal' meaning they are not called crazed... they are still higher level than the ghouls found elsewhere), and the heart drops off of both normal and crazed ghouls, as far as I know. All ghouls (crazed or otherwise) dropped a piece of small bronze armour.

In Najena, I know of at least 3 spawns of 'a skeleton', the skeletons which drop the hilt; one is near the entryway, one is in the small 'back room' where a tentacle terror spawns, and one spawns in the room one door past the room which has a secret wall. (ie., instead of going through the archway into the room which has the illusory wall, go into the next room). The skeletons are on a much faster spawn timer than the rest of Najena. The skeletons generally dropped only cloth items, (mostly cloth shoes).

I have not been to HK yet, so have little to offer on that. The thing I was happy to note is that none of these spawns have placeholders, so you won't be taking away from other people's normal kills in an effort to spawn them. Additionally, the spawn rates are very reasonable... ~10 mins or less for each.

Oh, one other thing.. the NPC which starts this quest is found in the SE corner of WK, along the water.

Hope that helps,
Xsi Kal

I started this quest tonight so I could give my Ghoulbane back to the person who gave it to me.

I actually got my blade of Nobility off a "a goblin" in the BB goblin camp, and my "A Ghoul's Heart" off a "a ghoul" in Unrest. The ghoul conned green to me at 41, but some of the goblins and crazed goblins were blue.

So, you don;t necessarily have to look for "crazed".... I haven't been to Najena or HighKeep yet for those two parts... that'll be tomorrow...

This defintely answers the question of what the hilt I picked up in Najena is for....

I think that for those Pally's that aren't part of a guild, this is an excellent way of getting Ghoulbane. Sends you around the world, sort of, but travelling to exotic places, meeting new and interesting peoples... and killing them, hey it is all a part of the game!

Be warned tho, those Skellies in Najena try to whup up on a level 39/40 (keep getting caught between a rock and a grinder) Ranger with full self defense/attack buffs going. They are still blue to me at 40, and worth half a blue bub at 39, so they ain't easy by any means. You guys are gonna earn that hilt.

Good luck!

The loc for the crazed goblins in BB is way off. They are close to Kaladim. Search the area near the first Guard post from Kaladim to the cross roads.

Also they should be lvl 28-29 mobs that drop cloth and small ringmail as common drops.

In all the stories about honourable knights, that is all that they do ... go on quests. Course, Verant still doesn't have the paladin community saving fair damsels ... maybe in Luclin.
This is wonderful!

Hooray! Finally, a way to get a Ghoulbane without having to kill Frogloks!

I had hoped that the final thing to do would be go see the Shin Lord and get the resulting Ghoulbane from him... but this is plenty good enough!
