We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

Facing the Estate of Unrest tunnel she is to the left (east) and up on a ledge, not a rock.

Also just completed it with level 1 Paladin (with level 100 mage escort). I just said the last words to get the item and advance the quest to the next npc and had no problems. The combine went off without a hitch. Only pain was the camping of the items.

This quest works just fine, and I think was quicker than trying to camp one, even during Kunark when everyone has moved on from Guk. My only comment is on the end of this walk though. You combine the items and get Ghoulbane on the spot. There's nothing more to do.

This Dwarf is no longer AWOL. After the last patch they moved him to location 2202.38, 2996.74

He is no longer by the docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side ; the same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. Quest seems to be working fine. No issues with the dialog. All appears to be [bracketed and linked] now.

There are three locations where crazed ghouls spawn in Unrest. The first is the "closet" at the top of the right-hand staircase (turn left when you reach the top of the stairs, and it's right next to the stairway leading to the Priest of Najena tower; location 4 on the EQAtlas map) It's placeholder is a regular ghoul. The second is the "tower room" identified as "5" on the EQAtlas map near the top of the left-hand staircase. It's placeholder is also a regular ghoul. The placeholder CAN drop the Ghoul's Heart (got mine yesterday from the placeholder). The third place the crazed ghoul can spawn is in the loft in the "Back Room" where the Reclusive Ghoul Magi spawns. A crazed ghoul, or a regular ghoul, is sometimes the RGM's placeholder.

Today I got "Amstafs scroll" from "a goblin" in highkeep. Not a crazed goblin.
Updated Quest Information
# Feb 25 2015 at 11:35 AM Rating: Decent
I just completed this quest last night on the Erollisi Marr/Nameless server. My character was a level 34 Human Paladin of Erollisi Marr.

First off, there was nothing broken about this quest at all. All of the NPCs were located where they were supposed to be. Just as importantly, all of the dialogue prompts with every one of the Quest NPCs involved worked just fine when I clicked on them, so the continuity is complete. The only thing that could be considered an exception is the dialogue with Llara. When you hand Llara the Pendant, she doesn't give any prompts. She simply says, "Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?" - The answer to which is pretty obvious. So simply respond with, "I got it from Kanthuk Ogrebane." or something similar. From there on the dialogue includes prompts which work just fine. So if having to answer a question that the player couldn't possibly be asked without knowing the answer to amounts to a "broken quest" just because there are no prompts to click, then "broken quest" means absurdly lazy gameplay.

Ryshon Hunsti is still located where he is listed on his page, in West Karana: -4240, -15170.
Kanthuk Ogrebane is still located in the area where he is cited to be (sorry, I didn't confirm the exact location), in Butcherblock Mountains near the docks. Facing the dock area from outside the dock walls, he is on the beach to the right outside the walls close to where the ship is in the bay.
Llara is still located where she is listed on her page, in Dagnor's Cauldron: -1748, -940, +150.
Ruathey is still located where she is listed on her page, in Lavastorm Mountains: 603, -7, 103.

An item conspicuously missing from the information listed here (under Quest Items) is the container that Ruathey gives to collect and combine contents to form Ghoulbane (unless you don't typically list the container items for quests, in which case, disregard my mentioning of it here). The name of the container is "Nobleman's Bag". It is a Large item with a 4 item capacity and a Large size cap. It includes a combine button to combine the Ghoul's Heart, Amstaf's Scroll, Blade of Nobility, and the Nobleman's Hilt to form Ghoulbane. I believe the bag is listed here on Allakhazam, although it has almost no description to it. I will post this information in the comments to the Nobleman's Bag item page.

I have yet to seek out the items to combine in the bag. I may update this comment when I have. Good questing all!

Works!
# May 09 2014 at 12:34 AM Rating: Decent
Quest works. I did it on the Vox Server and now I have Ghoulbane. Took about 3 four hour sessions, give or take.

You can find the info places and faces you need in this thread but what you need to do to make this work is use oldschool /say commands to forward the dialogue with the NPCs. The NPCs don't all automatically give you all the prompts so you have to manually type them instead of always clicking. Some of the lines prompt correctly and others need you to /say.

If you use the the script typed out above here on the quest page you can advance the dialogue. For example when you find Kanthuk you do this:

Hail Kanthuk.

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?' (If the prompt doesn't come up type "/say Who is Amstaf Trunolis?"

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?' (If prompt is missing: "/say What Battle?")

You say, 'What courage?' (/say What Courage?)

It's glitchy but if you use those /say commands if prompts don't work when talking to the NPCs (Ryshon Hunsti, Kanthuk Ogrebane and Llara,Ruathey) in the first stages of the quests it should advance the dialogue. I don't remember every line where there were problems with the prompts but sometimes you can click the prompt and it will advance and sometimes you have to do it manually.

The camping portion went fine- got all the drops. Most of the zones were deserted.

--------------------
Quick notes on the camps:

I started the quest at level 28 and the camps were a breeze Moloing. I figured I'd start out with Goblins because there's good undead pali spells at level 30. Sure enough it worked very well.

I did the High Keep first. Get to the basement with the goblins. For me the Goblin Thief in the first room dropped Amstaf's Scroll. The gaurds will help kill Goblins so after I pulled the crazed goblin and the thief I pulled the rest into mini train. It took the guards a bit to finish them off but it worked out great spawn wise. Took About 1.5 hours.

Then it was off to Butcherblock. For me the Blade of Nobility dropped off a Crazed Goblin at the camp around the ruins near the PoK book. You can see the camp from the book. It's a group of 3 Goblins. I'd bring something to do while you sit. I was able to suspend my merc in between spawns. Took about 2 hours to get the drop.

Bu this point I had leveled to 30 so I went and bought the spells and it was all downhill from there.

Najena-
Hilt of the Nobleman dropped from "A skeleton". There was a staircase were 2 "a skeleton"s were. This was the easiest drop for me. The MOBs in the dungeon were dropping in like 4 hits.

Estate:
Got the ghouls heart from a room on the second floor at the front of the house. If you enter the house and go up the steps to the left corner the crazed ghoul was just hanging out. Took like 3 hours though. Ugh.

The combination of the items worked perfectly.

It's fun doing like 300+ to undead.

This quest appears to currently be broken. When you follow through the dialog to the point of "I seek the sword of nobility", it loops back to the FIRST time you said What sword to him. I think this was likely broken when they turned some of the quest dialog into links you can click to progress.

Not a bad quest
# Jun 28 2008 at 2:12 PM Rating: Decent
I started the quest at lvl 25, got two levels in Najena alone hunting the skeletons (good level to get those in Najena as the rest will be pretty much greyed out, apart from the terror and the occasional guard and the Froglok Ghoul), almost two levels fighting the crazed goblins in Butcherblock before I gave up for the day. The drops are pretty hard to get, but at least the drops and xp are worth doing it at that level. (over 150 pp and about four levels so far, not even halfway)

Edited to add: I got my Amstaff's scroll from the first crazed goblin I killed in the Highkeep. Considering the previous timesinks in Najena and especially Butcherblock, I'm quite pleased with that!

The Quest is Still Working

The quest is still working with all for items dropping in the following manner:

Blade of Nobility: Location in Butcher Block Mountains is still 1330, -1500 with the three goblins around the dwarven tombstones. The item dropped off "a crazed" goblin. Total time camped: 12 hours.

Ghoul's Heart: Location was Unrest and the item dropped off "a ghoul." I simply kept clearing the house and within 4 hours the item dropped.

Amstaf's scroll: Location is Highpass Keep in the lower levels of an old mine area filled with goblins. The item dropped off "a goblin thief" of which only two appeared in the mines at fixed positions. One in the corner of the main larger room and one in the second largest room attached to the main larger room (you see what I'm talking about when you get there). Total time camped was 2 hours and, again, I just kept clearing the area of all the goblins.

Hilt of Nobility: Location is Najena lower levels around the pool where the goblin and black widow spiders are found. The item dropped off "a skeleton" within 4 hours. I only cleared out the "a skeleton" monsters for this drop.

It may take some time getting the drops, but as of the date of this post the quest was working perfectly.

Why bother?
# Feb 08 2006 at 2:30 PM Rating: Decent
I msut say this is a pointless quest. You can get it sooo much faster by killing shin lord or if u have a lvl 60+ toon u kill Joren nobleheart.
(see: http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=5228 )

he is cake to kill. Soloed him on my lvl 62 Sk with wunshi, kei, conv. i duoed him unbuffed with a lvl 55 pally friend for him. I soloed on my Sk then logged out and went on my paladin and looted on him. his corpse has 30 mins on it and the only NPC that will aggro is 1 guard that wanders nearby and hes an easy kill. Took me a total of 30 minutes from preparing to looting on my pally.

So i say why bother with the quest?

Because by doing the quest, you could get it with your 31 pally, without having to use the 62 SK to do the kills.

The big thing is, the game is supposed ot be fun, and if someone enjoys doing this quest, why not?

I mean realistically, I could throw it back at you, and say why bother to even do it your way, since you can get a better weapon than ghoulbane from the bazaar (and better than epic 1.0 for that matter). Since the epic 1.5 prequest is faster than doing the whole 1.0, that can't be given as a reason either.

The only reason to quest OR loot a ghoulbane, is because it's fun. So, if someone finds questing it more fun that logging on their mid-level SK to kill the shin lord, more power to them.

Because it's Everquest, not Everloot. Many people find more joy in being involoved in a story more than they do in reducing some random mob's hp to zero.

Im just saying its easier this way.. The ghoulbane quest when i did it on my SK for epic was enough times for me. was very boring.. and not much of a storyline... now Soulfire for my pally that was a blast! Loved that quest... I would gladly do it again.

Way to go, flame the level FOURTEEN pally for thinking ghoulbane is good. Guess what, at level 14, the massive dragonclaw shard is not that much better due to damage cap.

Ghoulbane is a very nice sword for someone that level.

Also, as Soulgrinder pointed out, at your level, MDS isn't really all that good any more.

And, as this is a pet peeve of mine, calling someone a "newb" when you yourself aren't even close to level 70, is kind of a pot/kettle thing.

I'm in an Anguish flagged guild, and you know what. I Don't call people "newbs". I have no need to insult some new player, just to make myself feel good. Its people like you that chase off the new players, and lead to server mergers, etc.

Grats Rokko on a ghoulbane at level 14. That's a decent accomplishment, and worthy of feeling good about. Keep going, and ignore anyone who flames you for the sole purpose of trying to make themselves feel better.

The MDS might be fine for pre-40 twinks, but at higher levels there're far better bazaar-bought weapons that're substantially cheaper and have countless more stats.

Me and pal Gomatt got 3/4 of the ghoulbane went to HHK got the scroll in about 40 mins. Went to BBM got the blade off the 3rd goblin we killed. Went to Unrest got the heart in about 50 mins. With all the traveling and other delays took me about 3 hours so far going to get the last piece today. For all you people that think this sword sucks well nuts to you. This sword is awesome for undead with Instrument of Nife spell your undead killing machine. I'm thinking about getting a Improve damage item as well to make the sword and spell even nastier. Well good luck brother pallies.

Indeed it does. One of my very fondest memories was loading Instr. of Nife for the first time and walking into the Estate of the Unrest with my freshly aquired Ghoulbane.

Go get 'em Sir Rokko !

Does anyone have any new information on this quest? I've been farming the goblins in BB for about 7 hours now and I still haven't gotten the blade. Has the drop rate changed or has the loot table been completely revamped? Yes, I'm at the right goblins. Has anyone had luck killing them in a specific order, looting things in a specific order, anything? I'm pretty frustrated by this *supposedly* simple quest.

The other drops I've gotten fairly quickly. The scroll took a bit of time, but I hunted in HighKeep when I was a lowbie, so not much of a problem there.

The Unrest drop took a good while too. There are 3 locations where the crazed and higher leveled goblins spawn. Go in the front door, go to the main room, then up the stairs on either side of the back of the room. there is another set of stairs going up again on both sides. one crazed goblin sits at the top of the stairs on one side and another sits in a little room with a door at the bottom of the stairs on the other. the 3rd spawn is on a platform overlooking another room. go past the zombie Undead Nobles room. there is another set of stairs. you can find a ghoul magus at the top sometimes, so be careful at lower levels.

There are also 3 spawns of "a skeleton" in Najena. if you look around, they are the only skeletons standing up and the only skeles with a name above their heads. One is in a small dead-end room near the entrance, the other 2 are in/near the first large room you come to.

As for Ruathey, since the recent DoN release and the overhaul of Lavastorm, Ruathey has been relocated. (big surprise, right?) If you head straight from the tunnel (the zoneline to Nektulos), there is a small mountain proabably a 15-30 second run from the end of the cave. Cross the mountain. on the other side at the base is where Ruathey spanws. You should see a number of fire drakes/fire imps around. That's a good indication that you are in the right place. took me a good bit of searching to find her.

Hope this helps, especially those who are working on this for the SK epic like I am

Edit: When all else fails, go to PoK for a change of scenery. When you get back, kill the goblin by the tree for your Blade of Nobility. Murphy's Law: as soon as you leave a camp, the drop you've been camping for 7 hours will drop. =)

Fun/Frustrating

I only really started this quest as I looted an Amstalf's scroll. I think that it's a great quest if you're around lvl 30 as it gets you to level in places that you might not consider.

Having said that, the drop rates are an absolute killer! Still, all part of the game I suppose ;-)
finished

Finished the sword today. It only took me a few hours, duoing my mid-30's palading and low-30's druid. I'd had the BB drop for months now - killed a goblin while just running through and stored the loot in the bank. Saw it in there yesterday and decided to finish the quest. Unrest was fairly easy, definitely less than 30 minutes. HHK was more of a pain. Temperance faded once, and a second cast of it was almost gone before I got the drop there. I'd disagree with the person above who said not to kill the other goblins - I found that the crazed would spawn on just about any of the spots on the floor just below the miners, so I basically killed everything in sight (lots of the goblins were light blue and green at 37). Najena was the most boring of the camps. There are three static spawns for "a skeleton" and everything else left me alone, other than the widow mistress which attacked me when I got bored and went exploring.

A nice bonus was that I made between 300 and 350pp between the HHK and Najena camps. Not bad at all for the level.

Crazed Camp in BB

For those of you trying to find this camp, it's not on the in-game maps. The LOC to the camp is 1304, -1481 and it east of the PoK book, not to be confused with the NE goblin camp on the in-game maps.
