I've bee in Velk's camping for Lute of the Howler. Been here 11 hours plus 4 last night. I've seen lots of named spawn including ALL of Khalkar's brothers (several times each). Why its it such a pain having to wait on one mob.He must have deserted us.
Killed him dozen's of times, gotten lute 5-6 times. Seems to be 1 loot every 6 kills or so (got two in a row, and none for 20 str8 kills= 36 hours str8). Horrible drop and spawn rate, but it beats paying for it. Normal price (when available) is 50k on E-marr. I normally sell mine for 5-10k...just b/c...... I CAN DO THAT!!!!!! quick cash, guaranteed to sell. Neat graphix for my bard, too. Bards are all kick @$$ w/ the warewolfness.... love it.
PH spawn time is exactly 20 minutes. PH's are "an Icepaw cleric" or "An Icepaw Champion" (notice the capital 'A' and 'C'). The cleric seems to be as rare as the named. I have noticed 9/10 times i have killed the cleric, Khelkar spawns. Maybe a fluke, but something to think about.
Spawn time was 20 minutes on this guy (or his PH I assume). I had him spawn, left something on his corpse, which had a 30 minute decay timer and he spawned again when the corpse decay timer hit 10 minutes. He dropped the Lute both times, luckily they aren't lore because I was the only one in the zone.
Easily solo'd by a 72 bard, I pulled him with mez, he resisted it but oddly enough he ran to me alone :P the fight was very easy, didn't do much damage at all until 10% when he enraged, just popped a celestial healing potion and it countered the enrage :)
Hi i was wondering if a 65 warrior with about 2k ac and 12k hp unbuffed would be able to duo Icepaw with a 65 cleric with about 9k mana unbuffed? if warrior just tanked and disc'd and cleric nuked and occasional heal? and how well does slow land? and would it be neccesary to bring 65 shaman Along? or could warrior and cleric do this pretty easily?
The only thing you might need to bring cleric for would be because the whole room is up. but otherwise you should be able to probably solo him if you have 12k hps and 2k armor unbuffed =)
This guy was a VERY easy kill for a 70 Druid (About 7.6k hp or so with CV, about 7 or 8k mana with Clairvoyance and other buffs) and a 67 Bst (About 6.3k hp Druid buffed, 4k mana or so with Clairvoyance).
Bst pulled mobs around him while Druid unloaded nukes on them (Believe it was Summer's Flame). After all mobs around him were dead, bst pulled him out of the room (incase fight wasnt over before repops). Bst tanked it (along with pet) while Druid put dots on Ol' Icepaw. Kept bst healed and did the occasional nuke, dropped in about 1-2 mins. Dropped mask.
Took Him Down Easy last night..Only two of us.. Me (51 Cleric) and a 70 beast (Decently Equiped) fight took about 2-3mins..he was easy until he got down to around 10% then he started to get nasty..Was trying for lute sat there for abut 4hours and he dropped 2 waxy flowers and a scroll : \ going to try again tonight..Good Luck All You Out there! Easy... Went up with my 51 bard, casting calm on any see invis and walking past them. Got to his room with the 5 inside, very very tightly packed. Two guarding the room just outside. Charmed one of the two there and had them duke it out. Waited until both were about 26% Then started dotting the uncharmed one off.. afterall wasnt here for the XP. Dotted the other while I meleed it down. Medded up and peeked into the room to find the Pher. Calmed all but the middle one, and charmed the one on the right corner and had him follow me to previous room. I cast snare on the middle (pher champion see invis) as he walked up i sent my pet after it. I let them duel until my pet died and charmed the one on the left corner and sent him after ithe champ. After both were killed I regened back to full HP and waited approx 18mins 9:32-9:50 PST exactly. Killed the two guards the same way. Then just kept charming pets until named dropped, took 3 charms and chants to drop him. Had my wizzay there for a ride out and extra fire power if my bard got into trouble, but didnt need it. Did NOT encounter any traps at all.
As for a walk through once with the Icepaws, walk up the ramp stay on the right side of the rooms taking your first right. Go forward one room then go up the ramp to the right. Two prophets where there for me, i calmed them while on the ramp and walked up into the room, turn left and walk up the other ramp to the camp spot, turn left and named spawns in that room with a ramp leading down into them.
Lute of the Howler dropped for me this morning, in about a half hour of camping (Khelkar was not up when I got there, but first repop was him). There was a trap that popped in the center of the room directly up the ramp from Khelkar's room, visible and easily bard-disarmed.

he DOES still drop Lute of the howler, believe its his uncommon drop, with the crystalline silk mask as common and iceflame as rare. spawn time on mobs is (in lower dogs camp at least) exactly 19.5 minutes spawn of name is TOTALLY random. ive gotten him 3 times consecutively (dropped Lute 2 of those, yay for non LORE loot!), and ive camped him for 10 hours seeing him only twice. dispell trap is not a full time occurence and will be in different places at diff times. goes off roughly every 2 ticks when active. sometimes its off, sometimes its on. ive had it shut off during a camp session, ive also had it start up in the middle of a camp session. have looked for a pattern in these occurences, ie mob spawns, game time, RL time, etc and have found none. /shrug
hope that dispells some mystery, GL and happy hunting! ^^
the patch that introduced the 2006 fabled mobs also brought about the changes of traps.
for one they are visible as small circles of runed stones.
and secondly, these traps in velks, no longer cast annul. they now cast telekinesis and only once in awhile. think casting is actually a proximity trigger as opposed to just chain casting as they used to.
well seeing how i just got ittoday 11/1/05 it still drops i camped it for about 2 hours before patch went under at 4 got it . so yea it still drops the dude was lying to u and im very happy solo'd camp with a 70 mage np
was told this morning that Lute of the howler no longer droped by GM Vix after spending 3 days stright w/ no sleep i /petitioned thinking something was wrong w/ spawn considernig all i ever got was PH and when he did spawn he didnt drop lute...GM told me it no longer droped so.for those still camping it i'd sujest you go buy em before they get really high or something
Can we get some backup to this statement? Such as a screenshot or a log file or something please? Not saying its not true .... but im not saying its true either.
