After the 12/17 patch ( or patch of the 12/15 patch), noticed the number of hounds is tripled in zone. At one point I have 7 I was kiting, due to adds, just from the SE corner, between the entrance and the corner of zone. Alsl seem to drop more fur, getting 9 furs from 25 hounds.

the pic is inaccurate btw. hounds are same as dire wolves, and vey though to see against the snow.
I have farmed the hounds in this zone for both my own shawl and bankroll, and for other folks working on shawl; it is not at all unrealistic to say I have killed well over 200 velium hounds. I have never seen any drop off a hound other than a velium hound fur and cash.

I was having problems landing root on these guys, until I remembered that I have Glamour of Tunare. I land that on them, and the kill goes a lot easier. I keep myself invised inbetween castings. This keeps the Ice Burrowers off me, but won't help for another Velium Hound add. Normally, though, I have enough mana to root any Velium Hound adds, and make them my next victim. Happy hunting.
As of 9/30/03, you can kill the mastodons and Brontotherium to spawm the velium hounds without hurting CoV faction. Just keep an eye out for ice burrowers.

So, a level 48 cons light blue to a level 64, and a 49 cons dark blue. These guys are a mix of light blue and dark blue to my 64 druid, so they -must- go at least as low as level 48.
Maybe I am one of the lucky ones. I seem to get a fur every 4th or 5th hound. But these are easy solos. Good Luck all, hope you get some like I have been..
Velium hounds are on thier own spawn table with a respawn of about 1 hour. I count 4 specific locations where they spawn consistantly every time and a 5th that I only know the general location of so I couldn't time it. Only 1 location seems to be shared with a glacier mastadon, but that seems rare, and there are 5 total spawn locations for mastadons(including the shared location). Furs from hounds and mastadons are very rare, averaged 1 in 12, with a streak of 25 hounds and no furs, then 2 furs back to back, and even rarer for mastadons.
*sigh* Sorry for posting again in the same mob, but after killing a lot more wolves ... I can say for sure that the furs are rare drop and the wolves themselves are rare spawn.
I've had the furs drop rougly about every 7-10 wolves most of the time, sometimes the random number generator is nice and gives me one every 3 or so wolves.
It is used to make soft fur padding, oh and the wolves have about 9-10k HP each one.
> I've had the furs drop rougly about every 7-10 > wolves most of the time,
Tough luck, in my experience you can expect to see a fur drop every 3 to 4 hounds (got 30 furs off 85 hounds killed up to now for the record)
> sometimes the random number generator is nice > and gives me one every 3 or so wolves.
I couldn't agree more on that one, last Thursday (7/3/2003) I've been hunting in WW for about 45 minutes and 4 hounds in a row dropped a fur for me :) I've also had series of up to 8 puppies without fur though... so I guess I was ultra lucky
>It is used to make soft fur padding,
A very handy way to work on Tailoring (171 atm, got 3 skill ups and 1 fizzle out of 20 combines with 200ish WIS & 160ish DEX) and getting xp at the same time
> oh and the wolves have about 9-10k HP each one.
Allow me to disagree here :) seems to me they've got more like 6k hp. Bronthos/ mastodons on the other hand have around 8k hp
These mobs have very large aggro range, they have about the same as a caster without extended range(200 for most spells).
They have low resists from what I've seen, they run very quickly and hit for 150+ on average, they are somewhat rare . Their furs drop about 1 out of each 3-4 kills roughly. I can safely assure everyone that they do not summon, no faction hits either.
> Can sombody tell me if a 54 shammy cud solo these cos i need spell
I started killing them at 53 as a RNG, so I guess you wouldn't have any problem killing one, but I've never seen a single spell drop off them, and i've killed a lot of them.
These are very good pets. If you can charm, charm one of these. The are very fast so if you charm it without snaring it first do so. Ice burrowers are red to me, and i can kill them easy with a hound pet. Make sure you use pet haste! There furs sell for 100pp max on terris thule. Oh and they can kill a bronto or mammoth in 1-2 mins easy with pet haste and no other help (dots or whatever)
I have only tried 1 so far....as far as I can tell, they do not summon (or at least never summoned me, but I may have gotten lucky).
As for the moving while rooted thing...from what a GM told me, this was a bug that was supposed to be corrected. Ice Giants in Everfrost and HGs in Rathe sometimes exibit the same wierd rooted/snared behaviour (like being able to run at SoW speed when they are down to 5% health and snared!) Last I checked, this bug was supposedly fixed.
A 50+ bard can solo these easily. Did 4 in an hour. That was all I could find, not because of kill speed. They actually die in less than 2 min each. Got 2 skins. They sell for 1k+ on TP server. Uses - Coldain quest: I'm saving 8 for myself and selling the rest. Tailoring: Why would anyone turn these into moccasins or a cloak? With a choice between selling for lots of plat vs. making a mediocre piece of gear, ...
If there are none in zone, kill other things to make them spawn. If there are no mammals left (all killed and replaced by dragons) then either trash your CoV faction, or wait for a patch. They come at least once a week these days.
I will be turning the skins into Soft fur padding [176 triv]. Why... beculse its the most easy/cheap way to get tailoring up neer the triv of the studded acrylia armor [181] that I can find. And I will get to get out and get some nice XP wile gathering them.
Velium hounds are definitely solo'able by a 56 ranger. I've not died yet, and killed about 100 or so. You must snare from a distance, and cast panic animal every 12 seconds or so to avoid getting chopped to bits. Root works ok, but don't count on it lasting very long. They hit in the hundreds, are very fast, and will shred you to pieces of you have multiples on you. Their aggro radius is enormous, and they often travel in pairs. Keep your head on a swivel, and keep fearing them, and you'll be fine. The Ice Burrowers will end your day quickly, with 100hp attacks and that 500hp ice DD they have. I'd say that the Velium Hounds drop furs every 6-8 or so, and an average of 5pp per kill. I've heard they drop a couple of spell scrolls, but I've never gotten one.
I recommend going in between the two great chasms in WW, and isolating hounds there. The zone line to Siren's Grotto is often packed full of Ice Burrowers, and has multiple VHs if the zone doesn't have a bunch of druids or rangers thinning them out. They do NOT see invisible, so you can invis yourself, find a suitable situation, and snare away. Good luck and watch for the Ice Burrowers or you'll be ...loading
I've found at 56th (non-Epic) that these mobs are far easier than I was led to believe. No real problems landing any spells on them, although they do break root a little more often than I would like. Easily out-runnable with Howler or SoE, and once you land the snare it's all over bar the shouting. I usually cycle the full range of dots to drop them asap due to risk of adds (other Hounds and Burrowers).
Usually drop good plat, only 2 furs in about 9 kills though so far. They hit me for up to 166 (911ac). No faction hit - good XP.
i was killing these guys today along with some rhinos and mammoths, and i noticed that in the time i got 3 blue bulbs of experience, my CoV faction also dropped from kindly to amiably. i never got a faction hit message. don't know if this is a bug or what. didn't kill any other mobs.
I funally got the nerve to try these guys today with my 52 druid, with KEI. I killed 4 of them with zero problems. They never resisted snare but almost always resisted root. Didn't bother to try and fear them.
They are very weak aginst fire spells. I cast a total of 2 breath of Ro, 7-8 starfire and they were dead. No fuss, no muss. had about 2 bubs of mana left and 100% hp.
They were great XP, but only got 1 fur. The biggest thing is to be constantly looking around. The Iceburrowers look like thay could ruin my day pretty quickly. It can be kinda nerve wracking hunting there but I will definately be going back soon!
I see alot of misleading information here so i'll give you my experiances with them as i have been soloing them for the last two lvls.
I find if i kill other mammals in the zone these will eventually spawn. This is a fact, because i have been alone in the zone for over 2 hours, killing nothing but mammels and have seen many spawn. After i see one on track, I invis up and head towards them. Once i got them on target(they do not see invis) I back up to just inside snare range and cast. The aggro range on these is huge and they are usually coming at me while i cast. Snare 8 times out of 10 will land, if not i just turn around and run. In Greater wolf form they keep up, but will not catch you. Once snared, i fear kite away, ranger fear doesnt last long but only costs you 10mana, so mana is almost no concern when fighting these. I have had other hounds add while doing this and have rooted them, and they do not move while rooted (yet to see a mob that does). They can hit hard, in the upper 100's, and try to flee when low on hitpoints. Other hounds will assist them simply becasue EVERYONE is KoS to them. Any other mammal you fight in this zone will not assist, even the same species. I also have gotten lazy and just had SoW on, and still stayed ahead of these things.
Hope this clears some stuff up for anyone who wants to go give them a try.
