after getting into a ghoul group for hours and seeing little experience, i left and killed an elephant conning blue and it gave me half a blue of experience with lots of mana to spare. I'm a wizard which was encumbered and still didn't get hurt much.
Heehee these are fun to charm!! I usually take a dark blue, charm and buff the heck out of it, and then the elephant can solo rooks, while you take xp, for sitting there. I even took a yellow /con harrier no problem with my 'pet' . When charm wears off you can either recharm, or kill it and get xp. Good way of soloing, and then you don't have to worry about splitting loots or cash or anything (yes, I'm a greedy druid--trying to save up for a horsey!!)
I have a lot of fun soloing these guys as a level 14 necromancer. Here's my strategy...
1) Your pull area will be the bridge, so keep summoning pets and have them /guard here at the base. This is a good spot, as if you are in trouble, you can just zone to get away from the elephant. It is also wise to bind here so that your corpse runs will not be very long. 2) Find an elephant (not a red one) and pull it with Engulfing Darkness. If it sticks, you may have time to turn around and cast Heat Blood on it as well; however, should it get resisted, run like hell to the bridge and have your pet attack the elephant. Be careful, of course, not to run into any other elephants along the way, as they will probably join in. 3) Since they hit real hard, you need to keep them feared and darknessed until they're down to a sliver of their health, otherwise your pet will likely be killed. 4) While the elephant is feared, stack the rest of your DoTs on it (Poison Bolt, Leach, etc.), but try not to bother with Lifedraw unless you were hit a few times, as you need to save mana to recast Fear. 5) Should the elephant aggro on you when Fear wears off, just keep out of its melee range until your pet taunts it back or it starts to run away due to low health; the combination of DoTs, your pet, and melee (if you wish to bother) will take the gargantuan gray ungulate down in no time. 6) The tusks (the elephant can drop up to 2) sell for about 2gp apiece to the centaurs. Since your trips will take about 1-2 minutes, try not to sell the tusks unless you are nearly encumbered.
Tonight two wizzes, a 14th and myself, a 15th pummeled elef's with ease. He was 13.5 at start, finished at 14.25 just over 2 hrs later. I ended at 15.5 - not bad at all. We ping-ponged calves, elef's and even tackled a bull. Wish they spawned faster, but highly enjoyable... and good points.
Guys, these have to be the easiest things to kite in the world, all u need is a druid, shaman, or a necro in ur group and the two of you can take on reds! great exp!
