Seems pretty simple to me. If you want to raise faction standing with him, kill something he hates: GNOLLS.

I am a lvl 12 High Elf magician. I am trying to get the flask of nitrates from Gerael Woodone in surefall glades, but won't because he doesn't trust me yet. what do I have to do to get the nitrates?
try to compleate some of the druid quests, or kill Gnolls in BB (if they give Protectors of Pine faction hit, dont remember)
I went grouped to BB with a level 49 bard and he used his aoe DD spell to kill hundreds of gnolls for me to help my faction. I would tag them with my staff of temperate flux first so I got the faction hit also. Now I'm kindly to this guy and can do the quest.
