Tradeskill tag

This item now has a tradeskill tag, anyone happen to know what it is for?

Sowhats the cast time from the helm and can it be recharged? that will determine if its crap or not. I sure high end warriors wouldnt mind questing a clickable item that fills a buff slot.

I don't know of any way these can be recharged, but since they are made primarily to raise smithing skill cheaply (for those of us who don't have thousands of plat to spend on it) they tend to be fairly inexpensive. You could probably just buy a new one if you needed to, or, since they arent lore, buy a few at a time in the bazaar. I have been selling mine for about 20p and will probably be going lower since they aren't a hot item. For newbies this can be a great way to get some decent armor for your level if you don't have a lot of cash. Now that swirling shadows are no longer no rent we will probably be seeing a lot more of this stuff available.

May seem not worth it but...

On a PVP server this item would have some value with a MR of +6. I would buy one. I am vigorously spending all of my plats on blacksmithing. One day..........

If you want the MR get a Blackened Alloy Coif. AC8, STR6, SVM/F/C/D/P 6. It drops in Runneye off of Misty. I use it on my main when I need resistances, still lets me have some str ).

Skull shaped barbute. Off the top of my head I think it's 10mr, 35hp, and maybe 12ac. Buyable on Rallos Zek for less than 200pp.

I stand by my previous point. Tradeskills need a huge upgrade for the amount of effort they take. For that matter quests are usually inferior than dropped items as well. Maybe it's just me but even dragon/god dropped items should be somewhat inferior to player made and player quested items.

Being one of a large number of people on a raid, and then winning the roll (or having more guild points) isn't near as exciting as painstakingly getting your skill up, gathering the materials, and finally succeeding at a tradeskill/finishing a quest. The material rewards should be much greater, or at least compellingly different than random drops. Just my opinion.
Worthwhile?

Considering the time and and plat it takes to be able to get most tradeskills up, you would think the results would be a little more worthwhile. While I won't say this is garbage, I will say you can pick up much nicer and cheaper than it would take to find someone who would bother to make it. I think that if Verant is interested in making tradeskills profitable or worthwhile they need to make the stats much higher (perhaps with AC much higher than can normally be found on looted armor)or give them unique stats or abilities that can't be found on looted armor at all. Just my opinion.

I would also like to see the stats upgraded, but the end results wouldnt be the reason for me to try to make these. There is one simple fact about the Shar Vahl progresive tradeskill quests that make them all worth while in the end..... They dont cost you a cent, and they get you to 200+ (Some all the way to 250. Before Luclin, that was impossible. They may take forever to get your skills up, but some careful pre-planning and gathering of materials can help you shoot through them. It helps to get through the early stages of the quest to just spend a little money and get to 100 in smithing first, though.

I would rather spend a huge amount of time gathering materials to make useless armor that doesnt cost me a cent to make then to blow a fortune on a single attempt that most likely wont even give me a skill up. Then when I get a chance to make a really awesome and expensive attempt at other stuff, I am far less likely to fail.

I have to disagree. The amount of time you have to spend farming these materials is staggering. If you were to spend that time farming silks, crystal silks, pelts, etc you could sell them for cash and do the expensive stuff. At 255 wis you will do between 1-270 attempts for each skill-up (post 188). Mining the materials for just one attempt takes about 45 mins in total. That means that at 30 trials per skillup average roughly 22.5 hours worth of farming per post-188 skillup by doing shadowscream. That makes a grand total of 1395 hours of farming to get to 250 (thats 58 days of your life pure on-line time).
If you wonder how I came up with 45 mins, well- grimy owlbears in paludal spawn every 10 minutes, and you get 1 per every 5 that spawn on average. For the shreiking substance you get one per every 8 dire sonic wolves in TM on average (I've gone hours with no drops, and I've had them drop on every other wolf- it goes in spurts). At lvl 45 these things take about 4 mins to pull, kill and recover. The shadows drop on 1 out of ever 20 skelies you kill- they're level 8 so they go down fast though. ~3-5 mins per swirling shadow. You can kill the lesser shadows in Twilight Sea who drop multiple at once, but unless your really high level and good at farming, your recovery time will result in still 3 mins per shadow. 10+32+3 = 45 mins.
I'm hoping they fix smithing soon since right now its rediculous. I've been at 188 skill for 2 months and have been spending most of that time farming - 96 non-trivial combines so far and counting. Had I spent that time grinding I would be several levels higher by now. And at really high levels cash is much easier to come by.

I've been told of faster ways to get shrieking and wailing substance in Hollowshade by taking advantage of the Hollowshade wars, but I've never tried this. The same person who told me about that said that he had 279 tries between skill 234 and 235. I dont know if I have the stomach for that.

Ive tried killing almost everything in Hollowshade to see if any dropped these. Even the quest mobs dont seem to (Although its been a while and might have changed).

I agree with you that these things need to be fixed. Some of these ingredients can only be camped by 1 or 2 people at a time and you have to camp them for days at a time to get enough to make a dent in your skills. The alternative is to waste TONS of money hundreds of times over and most likely fail in the attempt so you cant even sell the stuff to get a little money back.

This requires going through a series of quests in Shar Vahl for a quest Anvil and Humming Mallet.

You then create a Humming Orb from

1 "wailing substance" from dire wolves (no drop)
1 "shrieking substance" from owlbears (no drop)
1 metal ring
the anvil and hammer

Then combine:
1 Humming Orb
3 Swirling Shadows (no rent)
1 medium banded Helm mold
1 water
the anvil and hammer

This is Not trivial at 245

Check www.eqtraders.com for details on quests.
