OMG I cannot believe what is happening. Price of this research component is currently 12K and up on Quellious. PLEASE folks, lets be reasonable. FYI, even a master researcher with fully evolved trophy can fail a combine. The spells/tomes that can be made from this item are not worth 12K (and potentially doubled or tripled due to failure). My guildies will simply live without this spell and hold out for the next level of the effect, and you can sit holding those pages forever! Price for this item should be somewhere between 2k and 3k IMO. Sellers make some plat and spells/tomes get made for those who need em.
You know, it's interesting you mention this. The Sony Devs gave people the ability to research spells that others could not possible get. Let's take me for example. My necro is level 75. I saw this spell for sale in the bazaar, Dread Pyre for 20K. Which incidently is what I paid for Lich, way back when.
Now, If I remember right, Dread pyre is a result of a DoD #5 quest.
Which, absolutely no one does anymore. They're all like "NEED SOME T5 Essences!!!" Well, my necro doesn't need any T5 essences right now. He just want to burn some AA's at 75, and bring the pain. Now, I can make 3 - 4 k an hour just farming gems. Which I do, from time to time. Because this game requires money. I happened to have 50K in the bank, and I happened to see this spell for sale. I happily bought it. To make back that 20K will take me something like 5 - 7 hours, also during which, I'll make a few AA's and end up with all sorts of cute trash to sell, besides the gems. However, the only other DoT I had of this magnitude was Ashengate pyre. Now, what did buying this spell accomplish? It made my DPS go up by a few metric A$$ tons, that's what it did. It's a whole new world of pain, because with epic and dot crits maxes, it's some good DPS, and all for a measly 20K. Would I pay it again? Absolutely.
Now, let's take a look at the level of mob this paper drops off of. Those mobs are level 70 (ish). Which makes sense, because so is the spell, roughly.
So, what's my point? You want to buy it for 2K....and there's someone out there who will pay 20K for the spell. Now, if you told me "But, the spell is for myself!" then I would understand. That's why I think research is FLAWED. You should be able to make a spell you desperately need with easily dropped components. Like the pawduster, or Lord Begurgle. You should be able to camp SOMETHING that would make you uber. But, crap don't work like that. You've eithr got to buy the component from someone, or farm it yourself. And really, by the time you get your research skill up to the level necessary to make the spell....and by the time you get the components to drop....you would've (I would've) spent a lot more than 5 or 6 hours to do that.
20K...it's a no brainer.
And if they sold it for 2K...you'd just have someone (who understands what it is for and its REAL value) buy it for 2K, turn around and mark it up for 4K....or 8K.....or 12K....
Personally, I think all spells should be able to be bought at a vendor, or quested. Make some Uber-Duber spells that can only be researched, or that fall from a raid. Otherwise..what good is a caster, if he can't do any damage. Or mez a mob? Or make you some kickass pet weapons?
Sony should really take a look at what spells are available, and put a heck of a lot of them on some kind of "task" thing. When content is no longer explored...and you absolutely need a spell from that content to be a "valid" caster....Then casters are broken.
Incidently, I'm a researcher myself. And I wouldn't pay that for it either. Why? Probably the same reason you wouldn't. If > I < fail the combine, it's 12K down the crapper. If someone else fails it, it's > their < 12 K < down the crapper. Why do that, when I can just buy what I need for 20 K, and don't have that quicering moment when you hit "combine" and watch 12 K worth of dough go poof. And by god, you REALLY needed that spell. It's not even for sale!!!!dangit!!!! It was for ME!! Why should soloers be punished for soloing? You gave us mercs. A merc is a tool for soloers! Why not give soloers their freaking spells????
