Just finished this quest last night. First, what a great quest. The reward is definately worth the effort. The RPG expert link below was a very helpful addition to the information here. My only regret was that I spent so much time farming a Blood Wolf Harness. (As specified in the RPG Expert walkthrough.)It wasn't used during the Wolf Tamer hand in. It was handed back, with the message that it wasn't needed. I read somewhere (could have been here) that turning in the gem twice is enough to get the harness of control - Well, it seemed to work for me, so I won't complain. I did the hand-in late last night, and I didn't even mention it to the zone. (There was only one other person in zone, and they were too low to solo Korf.)

For those who will attempt this with a faction mule - Getting to the room with the broodmother is fairly easy. Get SoW'd and inviso'd. I timed the movements of the mobs, so that I only had to pass one ancient shardwurm to get in, and then I ran directly between the two "guards" for the broodmother. All in all, pretty easy. I camped my mule there, still inviso to wait for when I was ready to do the quest. (Which ended up being just a little later last night.)

Faction madness
# Feb 28 2004 at 8:17 AM Rating: Decent
Ok im having a tough time understanding the factions here. Ive been killing coldains and handing in heads to the cpt in KD. Im now amiable to some giants, apprehensive to others, dubious still to the Wolf Tamer and he wont give me the harness, and some giants past the Tamer look at me threateninly and killed me when i thuoght i was safe and entered the wrong room. I thought there were only 3 different factions in KD (kromrif, Tomax, and kromzek) but apparently theres more. BUT, now that ive upped my faction with the giants, im kos in Thurgadin, so how do i hand in the bottle of Karsin Acid? Im assuming I have to kill giants to re-up my coldain faction and become kos again to the giants. BUT after that, i have to go back to Kael and hand in Giants Gem of Persuasion to the tamer. What the??????? I dont get it. Everytime i need to hand something in it seems ill have to kill for weeks on end to keep switching my factions around. What am i doing wrong here? Is there a way to raise Thurg faction WITHOUT ruining giant faction?

How bad of a faction hit is is? If you were for instance max ally with coldain, what would it take you down to by killing this guy?

...kinda odd...?
# Dec 15 2003 at 10:09 AM Rating: Default
Anyone think it kinda odd that the Dorf has this on??? All he does is run at first, then when you snare and fight he is pure melee (with some decent hits) ... but never has he casted any spells at all, let alone a DoT.

Unless he somehow stole it from someone else and had no true use for it [:boggle:] ... I know the one inside the cave before you do the BM turn-in summons, and casts (I did the turn-in to the BM while she was still standing out front once because she just would not de-spawn, even after more than 10 mminutes ... no Korf or his buddy outside.)

So, as a Druid, I tracked Korf and found him deep inside the cave and tried a snare, DoT, nuke ... sucker summoned me, beat me to a pulp, and I believe he landed a DoT or something too. So, just to warn people:

Do not do the turn in to the BM unless she is in her cave and do not attempt to kill Korf *inside* his cave unless you are in a decent group of healers and melee (if I did not need my factions in Thurg with my DRU and if I did not need the right factions with my Warrior, I would attempt to see what nice loot they may have on him, hehehe). GL to all, this is a fairly easy quest if you have the correct factions or know someone that does...

BTW: My Warrior (Lidium on the Ayonae Ro server) has dubious factions with Kromrif/Kromzek & Coldain (I killed Dorfs outside Thurg for a few hours until my faction raised with the giants and then went after the Acid and such from there... I would be glad to MQ the wristguard for anyone for a few, so PST to any of the following toons on Ayonae Ro: Miegre, Lidium, Ergeim, & Miegromper (the main toons I play atm).

Just did the quest for my 51 necro. The BM walked to the dain mining camp, killed the dorf standing outside, then walked off after about 10 minutes and I began to think it was bugged. Well, about 10 more minutes later, the dorf popped outside and the BM came back. The dorf started running just as the quest said so snare, fear, dot, and a 62 ranger playing as my pet slayed the dorf pretty easy. Took bad dain hits and looted, sure enough he had the bracer! So, now my dots once again do more dmg, and Darubious is happy!!

The burning affliction nerf makes this thing about as useful as a mana preservation you get 0-20% more damage on each dot and that averages out to about 10%. with mana pres you get 10% off every spell. For rooters and dotters affliction efficency is the way 2 go now you can save 25% on your dot as opposed to the 10% here.
RE: nerf
# Sep 20 2003 at 8:12 PM Rating: Decent
Changing Extended Affliction to Burning Affliction is an improvement in my opinion.

Extended Affl increased the duration of your dots by 20%. Nice for snare, fear, root, etc. but a limited benefit on most other dots since the biggest problem with most dots is that the fight is over before the dot does its full damage. And even on those short duration dots (less than a minute), it doesn't give you a 20% improvement. For example, a 7 tick dot extended 20% is 8.4 ticks. The game does not give you that last 0.4 ticks. So you only get 1 more tick which is less than a 20% improvement.

Burning affliction increases the damage per tick by 20% so that even if its a short fight, you always do 20% more damage than you would have without the focus item.

Um, it stacks with mana pres / affliction efficiency.

Burning affliction adds damage to your dots (random amount per tick), it does not reduce the cost of the cast, that is covered by affliction efficieny.

Burning affliction was not a nerf, IMO, it made the foci actually worthwhile, my 59 per tick dot now reguarly does 70ish damage per tick, whereas affliction efficiency added 1 extra tick.

So, how is that a nerf?

As you level, and your dots become more powerful, then this foci will be VERY useful.

RE: nerf
# Aug 19 2003 at 9:51 AM Rating: Default
This is a very usefull Foci effect. I have been buying the Rallican's braclets for my necro, but since they are lore its hard to find them in the bazaar. Not to hard to find a mage willing to cast it, just a hassle. This is by far the easiest piece of non-no rent equipment to get. Every DoTer should have it.

It is a 0%-20% increase in your damage PER tick PER DoT spell. I would say the average is closer to 15% rather than 10%. I always see some bonus, even if its just 1 point. Plus, if there is a DD component to the DoT that also gets a bonus.

as far as getting the acid goes if you dont know the area you have to wait to get it off the orcs (ry'gorr) but if you do you can go to the geo's as they are called i killed about 30-40 orcs and nuttin i killed one geo and bam there it was i also got a gem that sells for 81p with cha of 37 so i think that is the way to go.

mean? I take it it's NOT hit point only spells if it works on slow and such...of course, often the effects include a limitation that doesn't make sense.

It means offensive duration spells dealing with hit point adjustments are allowed (i.e. lifetap dots)

* game patch alteration addendum...

All Extended Affliction has now been changed to Burning Affliction, allowing up to a 20% damage bonus on both the initial DD component (where applicable) and per tick as well. I think BA is much more useful overall than EA was.

# Feb 21 2003 at 2:44 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, this is NOW true since the latest patch. Before then, it would also work on non-damage debuffs.

Really, I've lost interest in this item now because of that. My debuffs, especially Malo-line, are a lot more important to me than a few hundered extra points damage. I don't like to solo, so for me it's more about making it easier for the rest of my group to dish out the damage than it is aobut dishing it out myself.

bracer says no drop
RE: Faction
# Dec 06 2002 at 12:38 PM Rating: Excellent
The bracer is no drop. But you get the rallos zek mule to turn in the giants harness to the broodmother and the broodmother will walk over to Korf Brokenhammer. After you turn in the harness and the broodmother starts walking away, you camp and log onto your main, who should be camped at the caves where korf and his pal spawn. It'll take a couple minutes for the broodmother to show up, so you have that time to prepare yourself. She'll come in from the north.

Korf himself is a wimp. He was blue to a level 52, and hit for 100+ damage. But when I got him slowed he was easy. Took 1 plague, 2 ebolts, 2 venom of the snakes, and some melee from me. And I can't melee that great, being a shaman and all. :) The only spell he resisted was at the end of the fight, when he resisted my root spell.

Here's how I did the quest.

Bring the rallos zek worshipping alt to crystal caverns. Get your main there too. Kill orcs with your main until you get a bottle of karsin acid to drop. Log onto your alt, loot the acid, and go back to thurgadin. You should bind here in thurg by the way. Go down to the area where the paladin and cleric quest npc's are, in that little castle. Across from it is a dwarf in a bar named Erdarf Restil(-370, 455). He gives you a gem of persuasion. Go to Kael and find a frost giant tamer, under a bridge in the south part of the city. Loc is -1100, 1720. Give him the gem of persuasion and he'll give you a giants gem of persuasion. Give that back to him and he'll give you a Giants Harness of Control. NOTE: You do NOT need a war wolf choker, or blood wolf harness to do this quest!!

Go to great divide(have your main camp in front of the cave at the loc -6200, -3200.) and find the shardwurm broodmother. Give the broodmother your giants harness of control then camp and log onto your main. You'll see Korf Brokenhammer and another dwarf outside the cave.

****DO NOT ATTACK KORF YET!!****

Wait for the broodmother to come along, and she'll attack Korf's friend. Korf will de-spawn then re-spawn, this time with the wristguard on him. He'll start running south to southwest-ish. Just root him or something and kill him. I think if he gets too far he'll despawn.

Hope that helps everyone get their coldain militia wristguard. :)

You can also give the sceptre of the coldain ancients to the dwarf in the bar and get the gem as well. I found it easier to lev and invis my mule, get her down to near the queen in CC, log my main, kill the queen, log mule, loot sceptre and boogie out of there. The drop rate on the acid was much too long for my impatient self. I found it easiest to enlist a friend to help invis your mule and get you around. When my mule had the giants harness of control, I just parked her at the broodmother until I was set up and ready at the mines. Timing was really not a problem. From handing in with my mule to relogging my main (buff and med to full before you log mule to do turn in), I had plenty of time to make and buff a pet and med to full again before the broodmother made her appearance and Korf began his run...

He does in fact despawn if not attacked. It sucks. Spent 4 hours to get set up for him only to die to wurms in the caverns shortly before my friend unwittingly turned in the harness. He spawns, I'm nekkid but in howler form. He starts running, I didn't catch him and poof. 4 hours down the tubes.

Splurt-type spells?
# Oct 28 2002 at 3:54 PM Rating: Decent
Splurt type DoTs start wtih small damage per tick and increase with time, so that by the end of the spell it is doing massive damage per tick. This includes the Shamen Epic's effect, Curse of the Spirits.

If this item would allow the damage per tick to continue to increase, in could in theory double the damage caused by Splurt-type spells. Does anyone have any experience with this? Somehow I don't think that Verant would allow us to combine these two effects in such a powerful way.

I've looked at the leggings quest I dont know how many times but once I got some elysian legs I thought that the dire wolf drop would be no use to me. Id never even come across this item until someone told me about it. I think ill try and get this as a replacement to one my my rowyl's bracers. I get around 30 less mana but better resists and of course the EAffIII an extra 20% on my dots will save me much more than 30 mana over a long solo kill like an elysian skele.

Were looking at 6 Winged Deaths (350 mana) for the price of 5. Which is an extra 1287 damage for free.

I beg to differ. This item is best for ANY class that can cast a reasonable DoT (i.e. Druids, Necromancers (although +Int would be better in this case) and Shamans), not just Shamans. I suppose Clerics could get some use out of this as well when using the Undead DoT's.

Please note, however, that this is Extended Affliction, as opposed to Affliction Haste or Affliction Enhancement. (Is this last one correct? I'm not sure. Please forgive if it's wrong.)

And the saves just make it even better!

It effects most ench spells these days. Our dots are our most efficient damage and it's nice. It works on slows, cripples, tashes, and some mezzes. With mezzes it's random enough though that it would mostly matter there when we're in crunch mode, with so many things under that we only remez as mez breaks rather than early as usual. Of course that's also when it's needed most *grin*. So yah, these days extd affliction quite nice for enchs, and there's 4 classes to drool (enchs, shammys, necros, druids). Where we really REALLY drool though is affliction *haste*. Faster mezzing is a Very Good Thing (tm).

Lonaleb's comment..... proof that just because you have scholar after your name, doesn't mean they necessarily KNOW anything.....

there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of items in the game that are usable by monks, as well as any other class, that that class would not use for various reasons, i.e. stats are unsuitable, too heavy, etc etc etc., ad infinitum et nauseum.
If you're a monk and have half a brain, go do the bracer of benevolence quest. While the fight is certainly tougher, it is a MUCH easier quest to complete as far as running around and getting the items, and the result is much better for a monk. Not sure if you can do it twice, as I have only done the quest for the talisman... but fairly sure the bracers are non-lore, have ac 15-17 (again not sure) and some decent stats, and won't tip the scales on da monks.
<slap> Lonaleb.... I swear if I see some silly monk competing with a caster for the spawns on this quest, I would completely lose faith in the intelligence level of my fellow gamers.... oh wait... it has already been lost

It adds 5 to weight but also gives 5 STR back to cover it. So, the weight gain is zero. - However, the STR gain helps in your hitting. That makes this a nicer item that was balanced to not let you carry more loot but fight better.
