If you're doing this just for the cloak, I'd recommend getting a polar bear cloak by talking to Karg Icebear instead. Polar bear cloak is AC 5, SV cold +15. Just a thought.
I started trying to make this as a level 6, now I'm one BLUE from 9, and I have a kickn' cloak to boot. It took WELL over 64, as I failed at the second step multiply times, but people will buy the spare fur's and I still have three quarters left over. :)
All i can think about is how great this is at giving my iksar monk something to do while he kills greens for faction. With a current tailoring skill of 10, i figure I should be amiable by the time I am able to make the cape. :)
Between this and /gems, playing EQ just became more tolerable.
Unfortunately i thought this would be a great monk item...but with the 4 stones weight this is gonna be a murder on my ac... =/ while doing this is spent about 20 to 25 hours working faction...finally dubious!
Personally, I think this quest is one of the best newbie Rogue quests going.... Hand the cape back to the female trainer and you get your own MAGIC fang.
There are very few low end magic piercers for newbies to buy... And this thing beats the crap out of the Dagger of Dropping. Yes, it isn't a dragoon Dirk, but its a great weapon for its attainable level. The bonus is its free and relatively easy to get.
formula for gnoll fur cape- 4 gnoll fur bits= 1 gnoll fur patch. 4 gnoll fur patches= 1 quarter. 4 gnoll fur quarters= 1 gnoll fur cape- all in all it takes 64 gnoll fur bits to make the cloak barring missfires.
Ok about this low end quest. You can not finish this at 1st level. I have a skill in tailoring of about 25 and fail about 90% of the time on the first section of the quest. Your tailoring skill is going to need to be rather good to finish this and yet ac4? For the time it takes to do this quest it's almost not worth it. Though unless you want a cheap way to increase your skill in tailoring then go for it. It wont cost you anything but your time.
My tailoring skill is around 30. At that level it was trivial to make the Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle. Even at this level it took me about 100 Furs all together (including my 2 failures) All in all not a bad days work. It’s an EZ way to bring your Tailoring level up to mid 20’s. And here’s a tip. Make a Macro button saying “WTB Gnoll fur – please send tell” and you’ll be surprised at how many players will just give you Gnoll fur. I think it’s defiantly worth it just for fun, Good Luck Suth a level 19 Human Monk.
Indeed, as an Erudite Magician and then a gnomish magician hunting in blackburrow I found that gnoll fur can ususally be had for free or cheap. It's often left on corpses to decay or destroyed, and it a great way to get your skill up so when you leave you can kill giant spiders in the karanas to make your raw silk without failures.
