Pallis IS better high end group tank than SK
# Jun 17 2004 at 12:35 AM Rating: Default
someone mentioned above that SK was the best high end group tank.

and that palli stuns dont land.

simply wrong

stuns do land**** but that doesnt matter you still get the aggro from the stuns even if they dont

palli will hold aggro as good as SK and grab it faster and hold it for less mana

not only that.

a palli is better for aggro and simply has better group qualities.

REZ
Group Heals----save groups and raids all the time
LoH --- even before improved save raids and groups everyday asd well
The mobs dont hit when they are stunned so pallis take in less damage as well

not to mention being able to heal during offtime saving cleric mana

if a palli held aggro as well and even had one of these qualities they would be better group tanks

but they do have all of these

Spoken like someone with no real insight into a SK's true abilities.

More than ever, SK's and paladins are coming closer together, at least in terms of tanking quality. Your analysis that paladins take and hold aggro better, and with less mana, than SK's is total bunk. First of all, for aggro we have Voice of Thule, <12% aggro modifier>, then spam Clinging Darkness, level 15 spell, costs 20 mana, and because its a snare/dot causes insane aggro. 3 castings at the beginning of a battle are all I need to keep aggro throughout. So 60 mana, and I'm done with aggro issues. How much does a paladin use? (and that's not a facetious question - I am curious... will look it up after I'm done writing this post)

Also, you may not be entirely correct that paladins get better group abilities. While the ability to rez is extremely useful, and not something we can do, we SK's also get a group heal - Zevfeer's bite, heals 200 hp and - here's the kicker - 100 mana. For comparison, KEI restores 14 mana per tic, or 140 mana per minute - so having an SK using Zbite constantly is like an added, lesser C3, which as you can see would be useful for all casters in group.

Second, SK's get a group atk buff, Aura of Hate, which increases your entire group's atk rating by 135. If your group is full of dps, this is devastating (especially with rogues!)

Also, on the issue of stun mitigation, I would like to point out, and this has been said many times on the SK boards and elsewhere, that while our lifetaps may not be on par with paladin's stuns, we have another spell that adds to our lifetap's efficiency - the Mental Corruption line, which is a proc buff that drains 50 hp from the mob and restores 50 mana to us. With this, and some FT, our lich spell <we don't need C, unless its C5 :)> , we have enough mana regen to lifetap constantly, thus offsetting damage dealt by the mob. Not to mention that with the Soul Abrasion AA, the damage and healing done with our tap procs can be increased.

Please do not take this post as an affront; I also believe that pallies are excellent tanks. But please don't put down SK's - we have a lot of hidden talents and abilities that go on that you can't see. Its easy to see when a pally stuns a mob, or rezzes a fallen member; these things are obvious. An SK's input to a group or raid is a little more subtle - but that doesn't mean it is any less than a paladin's.

In many ways your both right... but there are a few things to point out...

It is very true that Paladin stuns do not have to hold, in fact they can be resisted and do almost exact agro. But then again so can Shadow Knight's spells.

Agro is a pretty wierd thing... but after almost 4 years of Tanking I have learned a few things about it. The agro gained by a resist is directly related to the agro that would have been generated by the same spell. This being said, for the most part all snares and the initial shot from all DoTs give relatively the same amount of agro (obviously DoTs continue to generate DD repetative DD agro based on the damage the are doing). This is the reason SKs can Chain(spam) "Clinging Darkness" for very nice agro at little mana cost. So yes, this is the SK's version of the Paladin's Cease/Desist Low mana agro spells.

Lifetaps, however, should not and generally are not considered SKs alternate to stunning... they are the alternate to self heals. SK lifetaps are like Paladin heals... good to throw on when your feelin the heat and think a couple extra hundred HPs will hold you till the next big heal... Also... lifetaps generate about the same agro as a DD + a heal, so although they are decent they are not enough to hold agro in a nuking situation... so you will have to choose between getting agro and tapping...

You have also severly downplayed the effect of the Paladin stun... There is 1 reason Paladins don't tank before Warriors on raids and that 1 reason is boss mobs cannot be stunned. Stuns are a 100% slow that can be chained for (65 Pal with all spells) 15-18 Seconds (with a small break before that mob can once again be stunned for 8 more seconds... Enough time for a mob to be slowed/debuffed while not only cancling out damage but gaining extreme agro... If you think a Shadowknight's lifetaps can cancle out Unslowed hits for 1400 for 18 seconds (not even worrying about agro) then your living in dream land...

Depending on the situation... a Paladin will have a couple hundred more HP because of Brells but its really up to the individual's gear. In the end the Paladin is the better choice for stunnable mobs... but for unstunnable or highly resistant mobs the Pally and SK are honestly about Equal tanking. Also do not forget that although Aura of Hate is a very strong tool for SKs... post-Luclin spots seem to resist/nullify it ALOT.

With that said I would like to address the fact that SKs believe they are a DPS class (and I quote) "on par with Rangers and Rogues." People that think that either don't know much about SKs, or don't know much about Rangers and Rogues.

YES SKs are the DPS side of the Knight, YES SKs get Nukes and DoTs... YES the average Shadowknight will outDPS the average Paladin, especially on low resistance mobs. But the fact remains that SK DPS costs a lot of mana, with no Medding in an active group environment, and that SK Melee skills ARE IDENTICAL to Paladin Melee skills.

People then bring up SKs that have FT15, and 74/30 Weapons... Well Guess what guys... an equivilent Rogue/Ranger has Equivilent gear directed towards doing more DPS... So stop being confused about the fact that you are a DPS class...

You are a Tank class with spells that will help the group kill mobs faster, and you have your place in EQ but your not what people are looking for when they say "DPS" =P

#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 07 2004 at 1:37 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) sk's and paladins make great tanks, but warrior makes the best one hands down, they have more ac, better bonus from the ac, best mitigation and dodgeing by far, around 2k hps more when fully maxed. and if you say well oh pally and sk can get agro alot better then your only partialy right, 1st agro doesnt mean that much on a boss mob, thats why only the tank goes in for the 1st 30 seconds, there is no chance in hell anyone is going to pull the aggro off that person, adjust time on dificulty and length of the fight. and also there are plenty of ways warriors can get tons more agro than pallys and sk's, raex chestplate with darkblade of warlord with anger 3 in it and shield of strife with the bash mod, nothing is going to pull agro off you, not to mention you have all the discs to generate agro as well. oh and they get better resists in the long run too. THATS WHY PALLYS AND SK'S GET SPELLS !!

Hi, when you reach puberty tell me, please.

Simply stated that SK's make the best tank on high end grouping scenarios that do not require a warrior. This is simply because in high end grouping scenarios the mobs are yellow-red and the paladin can't stun them, which is one of the biggest advantages paladins have as a tank, especially on mobs that die fairly quickly, most of the damage is soaked up through stuns

RE: wow
# Mar 29 2004 at 9:30 AM Rating: Good
Ok... Here are some facts from a 63 Paladin. High end Paladins have the ability to stun up to lvl 65 mobs unless they are imune to stun. Regardless of whether the stun sticks it still increases agro. I often use desist to maintain agro and it is a very low level stun. The stun component is a bonus. The real use for stun for a paladin is to maintain aggro. If the Paladin has their tanking AA's and a good heal rotation you are in business with the recent exception of GoD. Neither Paladins or Sk's can effectively Tank the high end trials of GoD. Paladins are not really a good Dps class. SKs have a slight edge there as they have good damaging spells but they are very lacking in heals.

RE: wow
# Jun 08 2004 at 3:39 AM Rating: Decent
aggro comes from the stun, regardless of whether the mob is stunnable or not. also, paladin stuns are EXTREMELY fast casting (i.e. force of akilae at 1 sec cast time, cease at 1.5, and stun at 1.5). next time you wanna flame, might want to know what you're talkin about, kthxbye

Well I'm a 65 pally with 150+ AA's and I'm not EP Flagged yet and I regularly tank in GoD trials. I have been flagged for the first 2 trials while tanking them and go there for experience quite often. I can also stun up to level 67 mobs with Divine Stun although its a 0 second stun. And I too use use stuns knowing the will be resisted for aggro control.

RE: Improved healing focus

Unfortunatly no, I think it is that AA's work more on an innate level (always on) vs item effects that have to pass a pile of rules to be effective (like spell casting reinforcement works on heal over times, where extended enhancement does not because of the min duration limiter). I'm more toying with the idea of getting something with a lifetap proc to play with outgoing and incomming HP using SCF and HG, tons of fun to have both go off at the same time (which I've seen a total of one time with garou on). Hey speaking of garou, I've got Healing Adept 1 and it only heals for the amount of damage dealt (34 at season 59), shouldn't that be 2% better or 34.68hp? Guess they always round down eh?

I won this off of VZ today. It's an improvement over my Sword of the Lost Crusades, insane ratio. Would have been cool to have AC in place of AGI since I use primal to proc Avatar, but you've gotta be a spoiled ******* to complain about this one =p

All in all I'd rather have the BBB off of Inq Seru (for the rune proc), perhaps the Emp swd, not sure.

But it sure is sweeeet, I hit a couple crippling blows with Holyforge in CoD this morning for 900's. The typical range is 200 to 500. Btw, the bonus damage when I equip it is 39.

I got this weapon last night /em chucks his windblade. I can't believe the DPS on this thing , it is insane! My 2Hb skill was 0 when I got this and in 90 short mins got it up to 124. and I was already hitting for 300+ damage , I cant wait to see what damage I do when I get 2hb maxxed out. Knights blessing heals for 180 points of damage (at level 65 which I am) This weapon is the best upgrade I have ever gotten. I cannot immagine ever needing anything better.

Thank you to RA for being so gracious and allowing me to raid with them for these past few weeks. And thanks for this new weapon! I cannot believe I got so lucky on Rot loot.

BTW it looks like a giant brick on a stick with spikes. Neat Graphic IMO

This expansion should be renamed Planes of AssloadsOfPaladin(only)Weapons.
Not all have been pally only but a ton of em are, spose they're trying to get more people to play paladins instead of sk's so they can just remove the class instead of trying to fix all the problems the class has.
So far i've seen 3-4 pally only weaps, half droppable. 5ish pally+others weaps, and 0 sk only, and about 2 any_other_class only weaps.
Maybe it's just me but i'd think that they would give an even amount of weapons to both knight classes rather than 34624356234521345 weaps to pallys and 0 to sk's this exapansion..

There is no need to worry about Paladins.

When Verant goes and studies class balancing, they look at the classes at the bottom of the Nerf pit and create awesome class-only items as compensation.

Just imagine how gimped pallies are that we need to have zillions of uber weapons dropping in every tier in PoP.

But make no mistake, even the most insanely crazy godlike weapon in the game will be rendered useless in the hands of a paladin. You see, our offensive skills are not very high at all, and even when we are raid buffed, we will only strike an opponent about 40% of the time.

Here is typical pally melee spam:

This is not just my findings.. ask any 61+ paladin. I happen to have every melee skill (even h2h) maxed, and chain-cast yaulp (adds attk). I put a nice chunk of AA into combat fury, double riposte, increased double-attack, and increased tripple attack. A guild pally joked that I was trying to become a rogue. It turns out that all those AA points only gave me more opportunities to miss my opponent.

It make the acquisition of an uber weapon a bittersweet event since we know it will really not make a very big difference.

the hit % for both knight classes is approximately 54%. The only thing I have to say about balance is that there is definitely a paladin bias over sk's in this particular zone. If someone could point me to a more SK friendly end game zone, it would be appreciated.

The best wieldable 1hs in the game is SK only. The rancorous skull of <some name that looks Polish> has int on it but no wisdom. Plus there are what? 4 or 5 planes left? This proves that it's paladins that are getting the shaft. Pfffffft...all the hybrids have a right to complain IMHO. But it's about the AA system, not items.
