I know it's already listed that they drop from an accursed lookout in BFM, but I just wanted to add that the drop rate from them is decent.

This guy showed up on island while camping shadows. He did not like me and started a fight that I finished. Besides a Shadowstone Idol he also dropped 2 swirling shadows.

What is the exact in-game name of these mobs? Also, please provide a level range if you have one.

They're definitely called "a greater shadow" (no EQB link). They're a little over "a lesser shadow", I'd guess they're around 40 (green to 70). They proc a lifetap which can be pretty nasty if you're near their level. They have the same appearance as the lesser ones.
They seem to have around 2khp, but their lifetap proc (spirit tap) can hit up to 200+ and goes off pretty often. They max hit for 75-85 (I expect the exact max hit depends on their exact level), they double hit, and some dual wield.
Drops are research items (various words, runes, pages and weird mage bits), spiny weapons (same as on many other luclin trash) and swirling shadows, plus a bit of small change (less than 5pp).
Swirling shadows are also dropped by "a lithe shadow" and "a dark shadow".

Adds are deadly here. On my 44 cleric, I got an add. 2 shadows + 2 hits each + lifetap each hit = 840 pts of damage. That is not pretty.

not sure of exact levels, but in order of hp, here is what i have found to drop these in Twilight:
a lesser shade
a greater shade
(various named shades, including a lithe shade, a moaning shade, a groaning shade)
then a named humanoid-type mob popped, forget the name, but no ss on him

I was under the impression that these swirling shadows where no rent and poofed when you logged. Is this still true? I am getting ready to start my lvl 35 troll alt on his plus 222, thank you enchanted velium bits, smithing. I was going to make the hummming orbs with my main toon, I think they are tradeable, and then I was going to also farm the swirling shadows with my main and then put them in the shared bank and log my alt on and pull them out. Of course this will not work if they are no rent, just looking for some more information before I waste alot of time. Thanks all.

Originally these were no rent items. That was changed long ago.

These items are NOT no rent. So your plan will work fine! Just remember the humming orbs are not stackable, so xfering them through shared bank will be a bit of a PITA. Good luck! :)

If you can take the hits (I have no trouble as a 65 rogue), then I definitely suggest farming these off the shadows on The Twilight Sea's southernmost island, as opposed to Shadeweaver's Thicket. The shadows in TS drop them about 50% of the time, and they usually drop in 2's. I get about a stack each time I clear the island, and it's a nice, condensed space to cover. Sure beats aimlessly chasing after lesser shades in the Thicket, or paying lowbies outrageous plat to do so.

Drops are 1-2 a shot..took me one spawn to get a stack...20 respawn..mostly off the " Greater" shades.

3 times now I have loaded 20-60 of these into my trader not knowing why they sell. To be honest I dont care. But I had them priced at 20 each and sold before I could walk away from the computer. I upped it to 25 and again sold right there before my eyes. Tonight I priced them at 30 each and sold 37 of them within 2 minutes of clicking the trader up button. All I know is I am getting more of these and rifing the money train til it stops.

I've been hunting them in Shadowweaver for a while now. They dont sell well bit thats not what I'm really after to though. Theres better selling drops there. I see alot of price gouging but thats greed. I always try to under cut. Most people go for the lower prices. But thats me.

The Greater and Lesser Shadows in Twilight sea drop this item commonly. I have gotten 2 and even 3 per kill sometimes. There is also a named spawn that drops inty gear; many differnt pieces with about 4 inty per piece
What level would this be? Low enough for my 40 chanter to not get beat on?
ive tried this on several servers. they allways sell at the bazaar for anywhere from 25 to 60 plat apiece. im basially a noob, but have managed to mildly twink my chars farming in shadoweavers thicket. my basically stategy is thus. upon starting a new char. go to shadowweavers thicket (so much easier to do if you have PoP) kill xakra silkworms and look the shadeling silks until you no longer get xp from them. then either go the bazaar and sell the silks (2 to 10pp each, but generally closer to 3pp) and get some decent gear. or go home and do your newbie quests. then go back and start farming the lesser shades. the swirling shadows go for 25 to 60 pp in the bazaar, generally closer to 40/45. I have manged to farm over 6000 plat by level ten with this method more than once. keep in mind prices vary server. and, it can be very time consuming. you could easily level much faster in a good group and doing the research to learn where to hunt.

Im glad you were able to get such easy cash, however anything more than 35pp seems to be price gouging. When you consider that you will need about 2 to 3 thousand of these in order to bring your smithing up from 188 to 243 using shadowscream your asking smiths to fork out 150-180k just on this one component in order to become a smith. /shrug not that it matters, people will continue to charge alot for them. Just dont complain when you buy stuff from me next time and wonder why i wont come down on price.

If you're starting shadowscream armor at 188 to skill up, you're nuts. LDoN armor would be a better choice up to 210, and you can actually make a profit if you are careful about what items you make. Then using a geerlok, make ethereal rings to 212, and you can make a huge profit here. Then enchanted velium bits to 222; if you farm the velium, expect to lose approximately 20p per combine. Then shadowscream to 240; if you farm everything, it is very inexpensive to make but very time consuming. A final note on all tradeskills: Always, always use a geerlok or better and stay as close to trivial as you can because, per SOE, a successful combine increases your chance for a skill up by as much as 100 percent.

Yes, minimum effective skill to attempt is 220, but if you have a geerlok, as was suggested, you can try them with an actual skill of 210 and still get 2 skillups.

Prices vary on demand and supply some ppl will always purchase if price <100 and no other available. It's greed from both sides demanding lower prices and demanding high prices, in the end the market will come to a balanced situation.

I won't, you are free to ask and elsewise i will arrange my guild to give a try to get what i want/need or maybe find the other salesperson that sells it for a better price, jusst like you are free to do so yourself.

I was in Shadeweaver's the other day farming Swirling Shadows and I realized the easiest way to keep yourself hunting A Lesser Shades, no interruptions. As the previous poster says, go to the area near the tunnel closest to the PC zone. If you're a tracker like me, set tracking to distance so you only see them within that area, it's tempting to go searching all over the zone, but that's how you miss them. Keep checking tracking and go after your A Lesser Shades first and foremost, after a while you'll probably be hitting them before they even move after popping. If you check tracking and see no Shades, then go kill a Skeletal Hunter, these are most definitely the placeholders for the Shades, it was a very rare occasion when I didn't get a Shade pop right after killing a Hunter. This way you're constantly moving, there is NO down time. I spent about 3 hours hunting and had 2 stacks of Swirling Shadows when I was done. I hope to get 8 stacks as soon as possible, I have a buyer for them and will soon have enough plat for the horse I need for my Cleric. :)

These are very plentiful in Shadeweaver's Thicket. To find the "A lesser shades" head to the Paludal Caverns zone area in the NE of the zone. Just to the north they spawn along with some other mobs on the hillside. At any given time you can find about 10 to 15 of them up. They have somewhere in the 100-150 HP range. and i see about 1 swirling shadow every 5-10 kills with the silk being incredibly common.

I can't believe the prices that you can get from this...it's really easy to farm, why do people pay so much?
The reason I often have to pay is the horrible drop rate. I've been farming the shades at 65 using tracking in Shadeweaver for 4 hours and have had a total of 2 swirling shadows drop. *shrug. how else can i get them?

yes the items are easy to farm but most people that pay high prices for it can earn that kind of money in less time that it takes to farm the items, plus they get xp.
Per the patch message on 3 Mar 03, these are no longer No Rent. WOOT! Now will be much easier to do the Shar Vahl smithing.
The swirling shadows are used for the smithing quest in Shar Vahl. It is used later on in the quest to make Shadowscream armor.

But what is it for...No rent so its gone after you log off, I've searched quests by item with no luck. Does anyone know what this is used for?

I've gotten a few now from the Shadows in Twilight Sea
These drop in the shadeweavers thicket off of the lesser shades that wander near the newbie area. There is a static spawn area of them near the north eastern corner of the zone near the cave to get to the Paludal Caverns zoneline.
