I have been killing these things forever and I have so far looted 8 unrefined sapphires, 5 of the diamonds and have not yet found an emerald as a drop..They can't be that common of a drop. Unless I have bad luck in this zone (WL).

All unrefined gems that you need are NO DROP. That means that yes, you will have to go there yourself and get them, cannot be MQ'd or bought.
A shimmering geonid in Wakening Lands. NOT the Crystal Caverns geonids. All the unrefined gems needed for this part of the shawl quest drop from these mobs.
