I camped the area at -3000, -600 near the east entrance to the geonid caves. In about 3 hours I was able to get 4 saphires and 3 emeralds, but no diamonds yet. It seems that the shimmering geonids can spawn anywhere a geonid or a geonid shaman spawns. Also, I never say any unrefined gems drop from the placeholders - only from the shimmering geonids. And every shimmering geonid I killed dropped 1 unrefined gem.
Not to say that there aren't exceptions, but this was my experience. Hope this helps some of you.

Camped these guys for a couple hours a couple o times and I can say from what I've seen Diamonds are the rarest. Of the geonids I camped, I didn't seem to notice a placeholder but I wasn't looking and needed something to do while I waited on repops so I killed as many as I could. Was using my chanter to DC a geonid and a druid box to keep him healthy. Of all these guys I brought to an untimely end I got 9 emeralds, 7 sapphires and 2 diamonds. The diamonds were my first and last loots. When making the faceted version of the gems I failed 2x with the sapphires. This was with a 252 in jewelcraft (250 plus GM device). Sorry for anyone who fails with the diamonds, but it is possible to fail.
reading all these misleading posts on the GEONIDS page, disregard all of them... I got ALL THREE different kinds of gems from ALL placeholders... regular geonid's spawn the Shimmerings, all near entrance too there are no special camps they all drop random gems, got all 3 diff kinds from regular geo placeholders at ENTRANCE - did all combines no problem with 184 jewelrycrafting base... more with geerlok
I've got the seventh shawl on and the solstice earring, and mental clarity 1, for a total of ft 3.
I root dot these guys with swarm of pain and drones of doom. When I'm at 100% I run up and melee until i get down to 80%, then i back off and continue root /dot till i'm 100% again, rinse and repeat. I waste my mana on one kill. so its slow, but it works. I've killed 4 shimmering and one regular geo, and my faction remains apprehensive (it was as such when I got here).
I don't waste my mana on self buffs, I just keep sow up and chloroplast, but i cast that and re med the mana before the spawn.
One ranger's .02.
edit: just had one drop a 'words of obligation', and a 'pearl ring'.
so though it be rare, there is vendor fodder on these guys.
Ok been camping these guys today, about 8 emeralds & 5 sapphires, no diamonds. I do now believe that certain camps may not necessarily drop only one kind of gem, but may drop a certain kind MORE FREQUENTLY.
For instance, the sentry on the right of the entrance to Phenocrysts room... the shimmering that pops there has dropped like 5 emeralds in a row for me, nothing else. I suggest if you are having trouble you try the camps proclaimed to be for the various gems... It can't hurt, right?
well, i'm on these guys right now. yesterday I whacked a shimmering, medded, and another spawned. I whacked it, and both times it dropped the sapphire.
today i found another up, which also spawned two shimmering before popping a regular geo, and the first time it was another sapphire... I was starting to worry, but the second kill got me an emerald.
so... there's only three gems, and i guess you killed like... 13 shimmering? no diamonds is some bad luck, but i think it might be evenly random.
I can confirm what others are saying, that there are no set spawn locations or gem locations for any Shimmering Geonids. I have hunted in the caverns for exp and for five different people's shawls and lots of gems for my own armor sales in bazaar and probably have killed about 100-120 shimmering geonids not to mention all the regular geonids and shaman geonids. They all have their own individual spawn locations. You never know what the spawn will be and which gem they have. All three types of gem are equally likely to drop. The geonids never roam and they all are on the same spawn timer so you can reliably count the seconds on when repop will be. I forget how many minutes it is right now but they are all on the same timer. (Not counting Phenocryst) Any spawn location is just as good as any other for spawning a shimmering geonid. I forget what the exact numbers are, but from the hundreds I've killed I'd say that every spawn location has about 10% chance of spawning a shimmerpop, 75% chance of geonid and 15% chance of shaman geonid. As for shimmerpops, just plan for 1 every 8-10 kills or so. Sometimes you go thru wholesale slaughter and dont see one, and sometimes you get like 2 out of 5 kills. With those numbers and figuring each person needs 8 gems, figure about 60-100 geonid kills before you get all the right gems you need. Everybody always gets a couple extra of one kind or another before getting all the right ones they need. Just loot em and keep em in case you fail a combine you just need to go dog-hunting in WWastes some more and not more rock-hounding in WakeningLands. I usually always just go to the north cave entrance to avoid all the other junk in the zone like slimes etc and just start pulling them in order as they are spawned. You very quickly become KOS to them but if your working on your 8th shawl quest dont worry about it. Its easy to just cast/click invis and run by em whenever you want to. None see thru invis. If you arrive at the cave and have tracking and see that there are say four shimmerpops; you can just invis and run up to the ones you want and just kill em and gate out or whatever. Most ppl I know, just start slaughtering em and pick off the shimmerpops on the respawns. If you are of lower-ish level and soloing you can still do the quest but just concentrate on the first three or four spawns and give yourself lots of medding time in between them so you dont get caught behind enemy lines during respawn. For your situation if you get several shaman ones in a row it could be tougher for you since they will be casting back at you whereas the regular ones are just a straight melee fight and can be lesser level mob than the shaman ones. The shimmerpops are all just straight melee. Oh, I forgot to mention that if you pull the shaman ones away from their spawn spot to kill them, then they will quite likely attempt to gate back to their home unless you got some good stuns going. This usually doesnt bring a train but it heals the mob, then he heals himself fast, then occasionally he comes back with 1 more geonid so now you got two after you. :(
OK, I killed in kind of figure 8 ... started in the most northern area just south of the northern T. Killed all... the shamman are not PH for the shimmering gios.
Random loc for shimmering pops. All 4 gems were dropped from the Shimmerings in the locations in the figure 8 or in the first fork in the path.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO A CERTAIN LOCATION to get the shimmerings to spawn.
To confirm the random spawn, I went there solo last night after the patch and there were 6 or 7 shimmering geonids up (3 in one room almost stood next to each other). Others were scattered about. I killed 9 altogether and got 6 emeralds and 3 diamonds, which was a pity cos I only needed sapphires grrr...
Update: Day after there were no shimmering up so I started killing at northern-most entrance till they popped. Got my 2 sapphires in 3 kills :)
Ok heres the real deal there is no static place holder. We tried thta after an hour of nuthin we burned the whole place, and boom shimmeries everywhere so all this try this loc crap dont work.Ohh just FYI myself (61 ranger),a 55 ranger a 65 chanter and a 58 cleric owned the place taking 2 and 3 mobs at a time.We even droped pheno for kicks.(he drops poo so dont bother). Also the faction hit from these geos is MUCH worse thet the ones in CC.I farmed CC for ages and wasnt KOS i was KOS here in 15 minutes.
Well it worked for me, I hunted same spot for the saphires and had 5 drop one after the other - that is what set me thinking (forgot to note the loc sorry).
Went to the Diamnod camp and I got 2 of em, went to emerald camp and got 3 of em. Maybe I was just lucky but I doubt it.
The shimmies have a shaman placeholder - keep killing them and a shimmy will pop.
Please post your results if you try this and lets nail it down.
Camping them at the moment and there do not seem to be any static placeholders. Killed shimmering and shammies and had regualr geonids spawn back in their place. Did not take much notice of where each gem dropped as far as loc.
One tip I have is that before you become KoS, you can train the tar goos on the geonids. The geo's will attack them and keep aggro so long as you proximity pull. Make sure you stand back as when the tar goos die, a number smaller ones can spawn. If a geonid does not attack they will just stand there and aggro you if you get too close.
Tar goos might not kill the geo's but can sure bring thier hp's down a bit.
The shimmering geos spawned at many locs and seemed like random spawns to me, with what seemed to be about a 10% chance of spawning each time.
I had 3 emeralds and 2 sapphires drop at the emerald camp (and no diamonds).
At the diamond camp, I had 2 diamonds, 2 sapphires, and 1 emerald.
Keep posting your unrefined gem results here. Maybe we'll get enough data to find out if this is random, if there is indeed a camp correlation, or if there is some other pattern.
I think each spawn site drops a different stone, I had five saphires from the same spot. I will post loc of each stone drop as I get it (please post if you know a loc)
Fighting these right now, so far I've gotten: 4 Unrefined Diamond 3 Unrefined Emerald 1 Unrefined Sapph
Been fighting these for about 3 hours now, I'm a 65 necro tho so my 61 pet pretty much eats these with ease, Touch of death IS handy in here tho. I was able to take down 9 before I had pops behind me. Oh, and During these 3 hours I've seen 3 shimmering up at once, meaning there can be more than 1 up at a time.
these guys are 2 easy...soloed with ease all of the geos in cave where the 6 spawns are..a shimmering can pop in any of them..never had a resist on slow and didnt even bother tashing...there on a 15 min timer and was just enough to be able to take one after the other and when last one goes down..rdy for the first to repop..in 3 hrs i had enough gems to do each shawl combine twice and around 1500 plat in loot( sellable gems)camped in halway just out side cave and pulled to there...shammys were no more difficult than the normal ph or the shimmering...only diff is i pulled the shammy with a recant magic insted of slow...then let pet have him..i just chain bedlam on pet and move on...give pet a serreted dagger( procs snare everytime)..had a wizzy friend join me for 30 min or so..he told me best dd to use was lightning based as others were resisted.still con lb and db to me at 62..got slow but tolerable aa
Did these as a 56th druid over the course of a week. I'd zone into WL to check if a shimmering was up. I would invis and track them into the cave, drop invis, harmony any nearby and just root-rot them. wh00t, i just got my last sapphire right now, 1 more diamond to go. So far i've seen: 5 emeralds 3 sapphires 1 diamond Flowing Thought 3 Here i come.
WELL..... from what i have heard they can be used to make these BP's not sure on recipe i plan on trying to get one for my freind and idea on drop rate of these diamonds-or spawn of the mob would be helpful or send a tell to bubblepop on Sol ro server PLEAZE AND TY /wave
Myself and a friend did the geonids tonight. 57 druid, 51 shaman. We did the start of the Phenocryst focus first, and got to kindly with the geonid before we started hunting them. It hasn't been too difficult. They do resist all of the shaman dots, but the Wrath of Nature and Winged Death stuck, as does root and snare. Malo and slow landed fine. We invised in past the tar goo and the Fae dragon, then set up camp near the Phenocryst cave in a fairly unpopulated area. so far, pretty easy, no scares. Didn't pull any shaman though. pulled in an area of about 4 spawns, that had a shimmering nearby, we just cleared up til that one, and started over. had a shimmering every round, have done about 3 rounds now. Two unrefined diamonds and an unrefined emerald so far. We harmonied with Harmony of Nature to begin with, and kept doing that on the ones that were closest to the last pull. ***edit*** 2 shimmering on the 4th round
As all geos in WL these geos have very high FR / CR / PR / DR but low MR. They resist 95%+ of my DoTs except epic. Same goes for poison / cold base nukes. Even after malosini. The low MR helps to slow them. Only way for a shaman to bring them down (solo) is to use epic and dogdog. Not very fast but doable. Much better solution is to bring a partner.
I was able to solo one of these with my 52 SK by snaring it and fearkiting just outside the cave. No resists. No adds out there either. The fight took all my mana & Harm Touch. I plan to do it again with more INT gear so that I don't run out of mana. Less AC is no problem if I can keep it feared. I got about 1/4 blue for the kill too!
I solo'd with my lvl 60 mage with epic with NO problems here today.. took me bout 2 hours to get all gems ineeded for quest. Not bad exp etiher bout 1 1/4 yellow AAex
Aargh, 3 hours with ench plus cleric (6-8 spawnpoints ) got me a whopping one gem. Did they nerf the drop rate? Did I choose s poor spot? Or was it just bad luck?
Hunted these tonight for a short while for the first time with some success. These seem to have a very high magic resistance, but in a group with a 53sk, 53 warrior, 52 druid, 52 shaman and a 51 cleric we were able to kill fairly quickly. In about 8or 10 kills we looted 3 black no-drop stones (sorry don’t remember the name), 2 emeralds, 1 fire emerald, 1 unrefined diamond, 1jasper, and 1carnelian. For the Shaman types, fear was a necessity to avoid gates but it stuck very well. FD might work well with a monk but with a SK it was unpractical at best. Tar goos will agro on them and get owned. Also of note was a crushed black marble.
