Witching Night |
---|
We are pleased to announce the first live event for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. The Witching Night will bring to life one of the Warhammer world's most mysterious and dangerous times of the year, when the veil that separates the realms of the living and the dead parts, and tormented souls wander the land in search of a peace they will never find. For some, it is a time to cower fearfully behind locked doors, praying to their gods for protection. For others, it is a rare opportunity to practice forbidden rites of dark power.
Read on for a summary of the special features we'll be adding to the game in this dark season.

For 2008, the Witching Night Live Event will run from October 29th to November 2nd.
The constant warfare and the approach of the Witching Night have awakened ancient horrors from their slumber, daring brave warriors from the armies of Order and Destruction to conquer them in the name of glory!
Four new Public Quests will be added to the game, spread across all tiers and pairings. Unlike the game's current public quests, these will be set inside of the Open RvR areas, allowing players to compete directly against each other to earn influence that will earn them rewards offered by one of the new Herald NPCs we'll be adding to the capital cities.
These new public quests are different in two important ways. First, they're located in RvR lakes, rather than in PvE areas. In fact, Stage I of the PQ is the entire RvR Lake!
In particular, the locations for the new public quests are as follows:
Each PQ starts with a contested Stage I requiring you to kill 100 enemy players, and the enemy has the same task. The first to reach 100 spawns Stage II which is in a specific spot, requiring you to defeat a Festering Unclean One. The Stage II mob spawns immediately and only the Realm that won Stage I can kill him and claim the prize, but the opposing Realm can still try to screw it for them. The chest will drop close to your Warcamp and will remain up for 10 minutes.
Also, because of the special nature of these Public Quests and the rewards that players can earn by participating in them, the quests will reset less frequently than you might be used to. Expect a few hours to pass after a Witching Night Public Quest is completed before you'll be able to try it again.
These Restless Spirits can be found all over. They despawn as fast as they spawn so use your shortest attacks to pull! They tend to spawn in the same general spots, and usually 3-5 in an area so find the center and pull from there!
Witches and cultists long in hiding have come out to perform unholy rituals that capture the souls of the dead for some unknown, nefarious purpose. They gather around great cauldrons, chanting the names of blasphemous entities. Those who stumble across these secret cabals can free the trapped spirits of the dead and then claim their rewards for themselves.
Look for these Covens of Withered Crones in each of the affected zones. They will be dancing around a Cauldron of the Dead. Kill them and click the pot to spawn up to a dozen Restless Spirits!
The wearing of masks has long been the custom of Witching Night, and WAR will offer four such costume masks that players can obtain by participating in the event. These masks will be difficult to obtain: one is an Elite-level influence reward and the others are very rare drops on enemy players and the witches and ghosts who will inhabit the land for only this event. All four masks can be worn by each of the game's playable races.
Special Cloaks! |
Mark Davis said in a Dev Diary blog, "One of the many things I do is working out a plan for our live events. Just recently we all had time to look up from our computer screens to realize that Halloween was right around the corner and we'd like to provide some fun stuff to celebrate the occasion! So, you know what would be cool? How about a sneak peak at what we're prepping for the Halloween season - known as 'Witching Night' in the Warhammer universe when the divisions between the living and the dead grow thin, and the power of Shyish, the Purple Wind of Magic, waxes. Evil cults, witches, and necromancers use this time to their advantage, easily raising the dead and calling upon them to spread wickedness across the land.
I love those moments in Public Quests when, on the final stage, the enormous boss monster stomps into the area and the final, epic conclusion begins to draw near. What will that boss do? Will he cast a nasty DOT? Perhaps he'll throw us all back into the aggressive monsters waiting along the fringes? It's a great adrenalin rush! Also equally, if not more so, are those moments in RvR when you're attacking the keep doors while the enemy pours down boiling oil, siege weapons are firing on both sides, and any moment you'll storm into the Keep where the final outcome will be decided! You know what would be cool? What if we combine the two? In the skirmish areas around the entire world during the Halloween holiday, there will be boss monsters lurking for players to kill. They'll have cool loot on them, of course, so players from both sides will want to take them down. I'm sure Order and Destruction will play nicely with each other and share equally with each other for the spoils of the fight — yeah, right! What else would you expect from a Warhammer holiday? Trick-or-treating? Nah! Beating people over the head? Oh yeah! In addition to the awesome conflict happening out in the RvR areas, we've got some unique encounters cooked up for anyone wanting to do some PvE Monster slaying. I don't want to spoil all of the amazing stuff we've got planned, but rest assured that it'll be 'cool,' rewarding, and very Warhammer." |
