I have a level 17druid that needs someplace to hunt. Someone suggested Unrest, but the way it looks is that I'll be dying twice as much there as I've been dying to Xytl and Gix in WCommons. I thought maybe the Gorge. Any thoughts on how successful I might be soloing here?

There's some bad ass fucker Troll in there that Ogres are KOS to. I went into Grobb to make some Pots and the bastard killed me twice so far. Never seen him before ever. I'm 37 and he smooshed me all over the place.

just checkin to make sure u know exp is the SAME FOR EVERY ANIMAL it is always based on level though dungeon mobs give slightly higher exp and sometimes killin specific stuff common to those zones like killing orcs in crushbone

Its a good place for your level, but experience is nothing awesome. However, EK is just close by, and is a great place for you i believe. You could solo Crag Spiders and diverse animals.
In the Gorge, Minotaurs are the right thing to fight. Muddites Elders give very little exp.

As a fellow druid i 2 had leveling problems. This being my first char, i really didn't know where to go! Someone mentioned HighHoldPass. I went there and found myself at lvl 20 in 3days! 1day/lvl. the best part is, i only played about 2hrs. a day!

i have been camping the orcs for probaly 4-5 lvls now. i have only seen the shiney brass halberd drop ONCE and the shralok pack THREE times. but NEVER have i seen that dam priceless idol that can get me money hungry.

Yes, the RainCaller is what you heard right but, i do not think that the Bow drops there. It is the best bow in all of norrath (the follow up quest of the trueshot longbow.
