each zone has a exp modifier- the hotzones just have a higher then normal exp modifer set.
yes the double exp bonus effects all zones including the hot zones.

Double xp is really just a +100%. With normal xp on it's 100+100=200%(this is the "double xp" that is claimed). But, if you have 2000AA(2000% bonus left) you only get to add 100% to that. It'll look like the following:

2000%+100%=2100%
If you have 4000AA
0%+100%=100%

You will see more of an advantage to use all double xp days for normal xp. So just level up and AA later.
