Horrifying Terrorist Attacks on the U.S.

This is not game news, but is more important. I am putting this up here because many people are trying to figure out what is going on and this way we can share what we know. Here's what I know so far: - At about 8:45 a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. 14 minutes later, andther plane crashed into the second tower. - Another plane crashed into the Pentagon soon after that. - A bomb went off at the State Department. - Both World Trade Center Towers have now completely collapsed, presumably killing everyone who was unable to evacuate in time, and also the firemen and police who were at the towers trying to help people evacuate. - Another plane has gone down somewhere in Western Pennsylvania. Possibly just a coincidence or possibly an attempt to hyjack it to another target. Words cannot express the horror.

wake up to the world

As many of you I woke up to the world for the first time yesterday. Though I knew that terrorism existed and horrific things have been accomplished by terroist acts, I lived in my shell and pretended that nothing like that could strike so close to home. Being from the midwest I feel more secure than most, cuz hey, we grow corn! But this incident might as well have been in my back yard because it has given a caffeine injection to my psyche. How they got on the plane anonymously and how they were able to take control of them is beyond me but one thing is certain, this cannot be allowed to happen again... anywhere! Whether the Palestinians did this or it was an anonymous act with little reward (there were american trained pilots among the terrorists) I fear it is the start of something greater. I am not opposed to war I just feel that alot of talk of killing is all for not because we have no idea who the real criminals are in this situation. I am just asking don't be so quick to judge one another when we are far from the truth. Then again don't put alot of faith in our presidency either, if son is like father at all, we can expect another war.
Messed Up

This was messed up. I live in Brooklyn, N.Y. and I was sitting in class on the 5th floor of my school and the whole room saw a plane flying REALLY low out in the Manhattan skyline and then it disapeared. Five seconds later all you could see is smoke starting to fill up the skyline. Everyone rushed to the window to see wtf happend. About 15 minutes later we saw another plane flying really low and the same thing, more smoke. And these were BIG planes. These planes were huge, they were commercial airline flights.
Its just messed up.

Just for the people that have never been in New York and never have seen the Twin Towers imagine the 2 tallest buildings in the world, both 200+ stories high, being hit by 2 planes that were amazingly small in proportion, and hours later tons upon tons of a building coming down on itself for 200 stories. Messed up **** man.

TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
This, from a Canadian newspaper, no less, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was
given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon
Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text
of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most
generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of
the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and
forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying
even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who
propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the
streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in
to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes.
Nobody helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about
the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why
do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the
moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk
about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American
technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times and
safely home again.
You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store
window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued
and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are
breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home
to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through
age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad
and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both
are still broke.
I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to
the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during
the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired
of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with
their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at
the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is
not one of those."
Stand proud, America!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the
United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the
rest of the world would realize it. We are always blamed for everything, and
never even get a thank you for the things we do.
Maybe each of you can send this to at least one person and they might send
it to one of their friends until this letter is sent to every person on the
web. I am just a single American that has read this,

I SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ IT SOON.

Justice vs Vengence
# Sep 12 2001 at 5:04 PM Rating: Default
I've read a great deal of the posts here. For the most part I'm in agreement with all. Those responsible should be made to pay for their cowardly acts of war. At the same time I am very dismayed to see that some feel that we must "find those responsible" before we act. Is there anyone that can say we dont know that it was terrorists that committed this atrocity? Why does it matter which terrorist cell did this? Every terrorist that exists out there should now be very concerned and very scared. Should we put down one savage dog only to let its counter part bite us again later? Thats exactly the kind of logic that continues to put people at risk. We cant afford to keep doing one day, simple little strikes that dont accomplish anything except slow, rather than stop, those evils that wish us harm. "Know thy enemy". I think that finally American and the world is finally able to see the enemy that the few have been warning about all these years. I just pray that now that we know the danger, those that have held us back and continue to try will get out of the way and let those of us that know what needs to be done, do it. Lets stop this talk of "finding those responsible" cease. We already know them! My prayers and condolences go out to all those that have lost loved ones.

My own opinion is that while we should determine who is responsible for this horrific, evil act, we should not stop there. International terrorists effectively declared war on our country. Now it's past time for us to declare war on them. I say Release the hounds...open season on ALL terrorists and their sponsors, with NO bag limit. Let them know fear, let them rue the day they decided innocent people were 'legitimate military targets'. I really hope that soon terrorists will be added to the endangered species list, shortly followed by a quick addendum to the extinction listing.

As i sit here and read each post, some strike home, others amaze and sicken me. Like most of you,my first reaction was utter disbelief at what transpired yesterday. The loss of life is unfathomable at this time, and my heart goes out to each victim and their families. I for one have set up a date to give blood.Even this small act helps those in this terrible time in our nations history. So everyone please give blood,it only takes a minute and god knows they'll need every drop we can spare. As for some of these posts.Just like the rest of you i am extremely angry. I was in the army and will gladly return to help find and punish those that set this event in motion, and those that either are harboring or assisting these monsters. BUT. Like so many have said.We need to help those in need, set things right, investigate and determine who did this. THEN and only then should we take action.I believe it should be a swift, severe action, but not at the loss of innocent lives.I understand war, innocents can not be expected to die,but we must try to minimize the amount of innocent lives loss. Is'nt this what this country has always strived for? So in this time of grief, let us pray, not only for the victims and their families, but that we make the right choices in dealing with the dogs that have stirred the slumbering dragon.

My heart goes out for all of those who were affected by the events of the 11th September 2001.

If there is any justice in the world, let the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity go to hell and all those that support them deserve nothing less than hell.

The attrocity has touched much of the world with shock and horror at the barbarism tht is still rife in this world. I pray to god that we can irradicate these vermine.

I am too saddened to say any more. :(

An NPR report I heard was interviewing an Arab moeychanger that said (and I am paraphrasing here) that now the United States would know the suffering that he and his people knew.

No... I'm afraid you are wrong, friend.

You only thought you knew suffering. It's a damn shame that it has to come to this, but I am absolutely sure that you and your people will know suffering on a level unprecedented. Killing is wrong... and killing in revenge is wrong. But, my friend, "your people" have done a very terrible thing. And you will know very soon the price that you will pay. I will pray for you and all "your people." May your suffering be swift, but know that it's definitely deserved.

God help us all.

Can you imagine the look on the terrorist face when he gets to the pearly gates and he's got to wait in line behind all of his victims. Then can you imagine the look on his face when its not Muhammad that greets him but a little Irish priest name of Father Mckenna. Then imagine his face when the little priest hands him the original Koran and says..."Em could ya do me a bit of a favor Osama?". Terrorist:(Blinks in disbelief). Little Irish Priest: Yes well, could you point out the passage in the Koran where it says," Who so shall fly a jetplane into a skyscraper and kill tens of thousand of people so shall he find his rewards among Allah and all the angels in Heaven Yadda Yadda Yadda"...Em could you find that passage for me Osama? theres a good lad. Terrorist: (Again blinks in disbelief) Little Irish Priest: Whats that you said Osama, You can't find it, oh, well, No I don't suppose you would. That's Probably because it's not in there. People are trying to stay the feelings of hatred and vengance with calm words asking us to all be patient and gather the evidence against whomever it is. Thats Fine. But think on this Is not Bin Laddin or however you spell that morons name still responsible for many US citizens deaths in the bombings of the african embassy's? Should we not be going after him anyway and like most people say Woe to those that stand in their way? I am personally outraged and I now have a Hatred that has never burned this hard in me ever. We need to go and eradicate each and every person responsible for harboring and taking these actions along with anyone who celebrated in our hour of tragedy and ANYONE that stands in our way. So to you terrorists your going to die and if it was my way to hell with the geneva convention and torture your *** to death till you tell us each and every terrorist or hiding area. To those in the countries that are harboring and or funding these terrorists that are truly innocent of them GET OUT OF OUR WAY WE'RE COMING FOR THEM!!

Thank you Allakhazam for your words. I have read the posts and I am angry, just like most Americans are right now. I happen to stand firmly behind the President when he talked of those harboring being just as guilty as those that committed the crimes. As far as my opinions on war is concerned, I do not endorse it in anyway shape or form. If it does indeed come out that Osama Bin-Laden is indeed guilty of these horrendous crimes against our country, then I say by all means allow Afghanistan feel the wrath. The Taliban are not innocents..they are committing gender-cide, against their OWN women. Slaughtering them by the dozens on a daily basis. As far as those women losing their lives in a war, I think of it as a release, for them. A release from the oppression, degradation, and mutilation that they have to endure on a daily basis.

Someone posted here, the terrorists have woken a sleeping dragon and it isn't happy. That is a very good analogy but a severely understatement at the same time. I hope America rises up to tell the world that this isn't going to be tolerated and that we are indeed a force to be reckoned with, when it comes to fighting for freedom and civil liberties. Whoever did this committed not only an act of war, but also one of rape, they came to OUR soil and violated us all.

Those who are guilty, may whatever God you believe in have mercy on you. I know I don't and hope America won't.
The issue
# Sep 12 2001 at 4:03 PM Rating: Decent
The issue is this:

For the past several years, the U.S. has essentially turned a blind eye toward Middle Eastern terrorism in the interest of maintaining international stability. Now our very homeland has been savagely attacked by an enemy too cowardly to lay claim to the assault. Osama Bin Laden has already called for the death of the United States. He is the well-known orchestrator of attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa, and the USS Cole. The United Nations has made strong requests of Afghanistan to deport him, to no avail. If Bin Laden proves to be responsible for this attack, how can we distinguish between him and the country that offers him sanction? We can't and we won't. By choosing to protect him, the country of Afghanistan will soon be no more. Thousands of innocents will die, just as thousands died yesterday -- that is the nature of war. In WWII, thousands of Germans who were unsympathetic to the **** party died. To the people of Afghanistan who do not support the acts committed yesterday, I strongly suggest you flee. Otherwise, you will be soon be victim to a fury the world has never before seen.
RE: The issue

The issue is also this. Guilt and blame are not clear. We assert, as Americans, that people accused are innocent until proven guilty. In the case of an individual, due process requires a courtroom or a confession or both. In the case of a country, it requires a formal declaration of war. Let's not give up one of the things that makes our country special simply because we are hurt and angry.

We Americans pride ourselves on the strength of our nation. Politically, financially, militarily, and due to the freedoms we possess. We hold our level of civility close to heart, as we try to remain above the actions of terrorists, dictators, and tyrants.
The problem with the high road is it creates a image of weakness, of too-much-tolerance, and makes us appear unwilling to act. We have more rights assigned to a criminal than is ever due, we have a legal system that is far too slow and is easy to circumvent. In short, criminals take advantage of us.
High time to show that we are not above losing our 'civility' and resorting to the barbarism of bombing our enemies back to the stone age.

In one attack an organization (who ever they where)killed more people in a single strike than in ANY attack in any war, save the bombings of Hiroshimo and Nagasaki. I dont know who did it, but we will know, and when we do more people will die.

Fact : Who ever did this was highly sophisticated in their planing and execution.

This indicates a remarkable level of funding and planing. Hell, think about this one, they knew exactly which 4 planes were full fueled AND only partially passangered. This indicates somebody was on the inside either feeding information to the terrorists or they ARANGED for the planes to be mostly vacant, fully fueled and ready to become weapons. I rather doubt Bin Ladin had the resources in place to pull this off by himself. So somebody with a great deal of cash and covert resources assisted. This would tend to indicate a nation's assistance in this attack.

You can whine and ***** that this man is not a country. You can moan and cry that the vast majority of the arab world didn't help him. That doesn't matter. He is being sheltered and protected by Arab nations. He is funded by Arab nations. If an assassin was caught in the Arab world, who proved to be an American, trained in America and being payed by our government; the Arab world would be howling at the sky for retribution. Bin Ladin is their Assassin, payed for and trained by the Arab world. WE are howling for his blood.

Now if it proves that this man's organization did not do this, if we find someone else destroyed all those lives, then our anger will go there. But he is an Arab weapon just as surely as a
Marine is an American weapon, directed and allowed to kill by one or several nations. If it proves that he did kill all those people, if it is proven that you have funded this man, expect to die. If it is proven that you have hidden this man expect to die. If you get in the way when we come for this man, expect to die. And all of you who serve him, expect to die.

If you are an innocent in this, get the hell out of the way. You may be killed simply for being a
citizen of the nations that aid him, and i will cry no tears for you, i have enough of my own dead who were killed simply because of citizenship in this nation.

The Arab world often seems to embrace an eye for an eye. I would expect our variation of that to be an eye, hand, ear, tongue, legs, liver, for an eye. This weapon of yours made his example, now we need to make ours. And the nations that hide this man should know fear, for you are dead.

When i heard this on the news i grieved. I grieved for those that had just died, and i grieved for all those that are going to die as a result of this. I am done grieving, i have past that. Now there is only the messy task of putting down a rabid dog and any other animal it has infected.

Rule of Law, Rights of Humanity
# Sep 12 2001 at 3:49 PM Rating: Default
At times like this, when we are shaken, jarred, violated, and grieving, it more important than at *any* other time, to remember two things. First, that we must help our fellow Americans cope with this tragedy in any way we can. When we unite as a country, history has shown us repeatedly, there is little, if anything, that we cannot accomplish.

Second, we must *always* remember the thing that has made us and kept us great: that we are a free society based upon the rule of law and common rights of humanity. This means, among things in this current situation, that we must carefully and rationally gather evidence before we blame, and we must, when we do identify the perpetrators of this atrocity, be as sure as we can possibly be. Only in the careful separation of the innocent from the guilty may we show ourselves undiminished and unbowed by this horror. In hasty vengeance, we show ourselves less than we are, were, and can be again. Remember that it is easy to mobilize anger, and that actions committed in anger can be inhuman, disgusting, terrifying, and destructive -- as we learned, to our horror, yesterday. Let's not give in to that side of human nature in responding to this injury, for in so doing those who hurt us yesterday achieve their true objective: to hurt our national psyche so horribly that we are no longer ourselves, and we leave by the wayside the commitment to justice that makes us who we are.

So, for all of you howling for vengeance, stop. Cry instead for justice, and bend yourselves to help the injured.

For all of you who intend to play tonight: give blood first.
PLEASE think before you act

I'm sure there is nobody who could be reasonably described as a civilised person who could fail to be shocked, saddened and outraged by the events of yesterday. But I cannot be the only one who trembles to read some of these posts.

Certainly, America and the world must hunt down and punish those responsible, but in the name of all that you hold dear let it not be the "nuke em" solution that seems to be so popular.

Surely there must be enough of us who lived through at least part of the Cold War, who at times went to bed at night not knowing if the world was going to be there in the morning? For whom the threat of the nuclear bomb was a living and very real nightmare? There are people here talking about levelling of cities. In retribution for a hell of a lot less.

Stop and think about it. Does ANYBODY truly believe that America could explode a nuclear device on any country in the world without running the risk os starting something that nobody in their right mind could ever want? If there's one way to ensure that the democracies of the world suffer even more tragedy and loss than we have, this would be it.

The one good thing that may come from these dreadful events is that maybe, just maybe, the world will pull together and work more determinedly than ever before against the forces of terrorism. The thing that most deeply terrifies me is that, if the forces of the United States overreact in the name of retribution, it may spark a conflict of truly global scale that shall not end until entire cities lie in rubble.

Justice must be delivered to those responsible - for Gods sake don't let it spill over onto the innocent, or we become no more than the evil creatures that committed this act.
