Once you have Dogmeat, return to the Overseer’s room. Tell Dogmeat to fetch an item for you. He should bust open the container, and hand you the Cryolator gun waiting inside. Ha!

I might have to try that at some point, don't want to be to OP early. Also I have not used my power armor since I got it. I built this first toon around AGI, PER, LUCK, with enough INT to get scrapper and rank 1 Science!

Doing the sniping and sneak thing mostly. Couple times I had big **** battles and thought "I should have used power armor here." But just went with what I had.

Favorite new thing: Taking Psycho and he goes RAAAAWWR like the Hulk and just rampages. Totally gets me in the mood for carnage.

Not sure if I'm just unlucky or what, but the very first "mission" I get to clear Concord of Hostiles after getting the Power Suit... a Deathclaw spawns in the middle of the raiders.

It takes almost my entire Gatling Gun ammo supply to take it down.

I reloaded and tried a few different routes to see if maybe I was triggering it, but it always seemed to spawn on the far end of town and bum rush me through the raiders I was killing.

Don't kill all of the raiders. When the deathclaw shows up they'll start fighting it instead of you.

Triggered event. As soon as you get to the crossroad in town it pops once you have power armor. Don't sweat it like Turin said it will kill raiders. Then you unload on it, there is lots of minigun ammo in turrets later so no need to conserve really, if you like the gun. Consider Concord part of the tutorial really just letting you know how power armor works.

Also I rolled an alt already who is taking over. Found I did not really dig my sneak build. Power armor and "I smash you now" hip shooting and bashing seem pretty great. So second toon with "what I've learned" is just plowin so far. Even getting into linking my colonies and whatnot. Also my base in Sanctuary is dead sexy.

Also I walked in and was like YOU ALL DIE NOW in Corvega in power armor as apposed to my sneak build which was like YOU ALL DIE EVENTUALLY after I nearly run out of ammo and slink around.

I reloaded a save before getting the power armor so I could try the fight again and use some strategy and VATS rather than just back pedal and blast it til it died.

I haven't entered the Museum yet in the new save, I got side tracked cleaning up Sanctuary before they join me there. I have to look up how to build stuff properly because last time I placed some Generators and it wouldn't let me place defenses because it said I didn't have enough power, but I did.

I also figured out I could scrap out all my extra gear for stuff and store items in the workshops. That really lightened my load. I was lugging around 500+ lbs of stuff between me and my dog. Now I'm back down to a reasonable amount, and have a lot of resources ready for building.

You have to run power lines from the generators to the devices you want to power on. As for the museum I picked off the bandits from the front balcony before getting the armor, popped a few shots at the unwanted guest and then hiding in the nearby storefront and shooting it through the window. It can't come in so it was an easy kill.

If you need fusion cores there are two areas West/North-West of Sanctuary that have them. The Robotco Junk Yard and the U.S. Army base beneath the satellite disk near it.

So, I spent some time trying to build up Sanctuary. I officially hate fences. I wanted fo fence off the whole area to force raiders to come across the bridge, but they just won't go where I want them to.

I just use walls for fences but I did not do the bridge thing, I just build walls around where the settlers hang out. And turrets, love turrets.

I am abusing the river though for all that sweet sweet water. My purification plants yield 85 extra purified water a day. Water is caps, ammo, life. I could build more plants but I don't want to break the economy any worse than that so keeping it around there for now.

Oh yeah, it's a life consumer for sure. it Skyrim's the hell out of you too.

Start off wanting to attach a new thing to a gun. Realize you need Muttfruit to make more adhesive. Forget a deathclaw killed everyone at the Muttfruit farm early in your game. Restart farm, zone to north settlement to send people to new farm and establish supply chain. Realize north camp needs more water, beds and defense. Get that done but realize your out of copper to attach a power line you wanted to attach. Zone to vendor to trade water for caps and look for copper. Sanctuary needs help with raiders. Go drive raiders out of underground bunker. Find downed plane, explore get new quest from log tape.Realize you should expand the sanctuary garden to include all 3 ingredients for adhesive. Go get muttfruit from the other farm. Plant Muttfruit, with taters and corn. Need settlers to attend new sanctuary plants. Warp to settlement in south, send travelers to sanctuary. South needs more beds. Make beds. Super Muttants attack south. Kill mutants. Warp north. Assign settlers to plants. Wait one day. Pick veggies. Finally make adhesive.

Got to make gun attachment and realize your out of oil now from building turrets in the settlements you went to for muttfruit.

Also there are quests.

I just used the console command to go to the secret dev area and picked up all of the materials I'll ever need. Farming in games has always pissed me off...

Fallout 4 is sort of annoying me. Maybe disappointing me? This whole town building thing represents the worst aspects of game world building where, apparently, Ms. Unfrozen Wasteland Lawyer is the only person who can manage telling Bitchy McCrabbypants to harvest wheat or Gypsy Drugbottoms to man the guard post because none of these retards can figure this out themselves? And, somehow, my law degree and six weeks of parenting have taught me how to lead Habitat for Humanity and build water filtration plants and weld bed frames? Without me, they'd all just mill around aimlessly until they succumb to hunger or irradiated raccoons? No wonder they went from twenty people to four -- they're all fucking morons.

I don't need complete "realism". I can accept, I guess, the fact that two hundred years in the cryochamber has apparently withered away my regard for human life (in my first two minutes out of the Vault, I casually shot some dude in the face and went through his pockets for loose change). It would be nice if the game world at least pretended that I'm not the only one who doesn't drink paint chip and mercury smoothies all day long. Or maybe laid a little groundwork making you seem plausible.

Anyway, I played for maybe 90 minutes last night and spent 90% of it building shit for hopelessly incompetent people who should, by all rights, be a thousand times more qualified than the woman who was a 1950s homemaker three days ago (not counting the two centuries spent frozen). It was less satisfying than I make it sound.

One man's trash. Unless I'm misreading your post, you don't have a problem with the building up a settlement idea, you have a problem with the micromanagement it requires. As a borderline obsessive-compulsive, I enjoy the micromanagement, I just wish they made it clearer on how to do it. It took me a while before I was able to assign people to do things - and I didn't figure it out on my own, I managed to come across a post explaining it somewhere.

I like figuring things out, but I see no point in forcing me to figure out non-game-content things, such as how to exit power armor Hold down the "e" key? I can't think of any other command in the game that is press a key for an action and hold that same key for the opposite action. I'm not saying it's a dumb idea, just that I had no reason to suspect that would be the solution..

But, and it's a big but, I was expecting a lot worse. I couldn't even play NV once I left the starting area. I had to search around the internet to find various fixes to play FO3 to conclusion, and even then I had the bug that won't allow you to continue past the final (punch in the code) quest in the main quest line even though I had the Brotherhood of Steel dlc. I haven't crashed once with FO4 and I've put in about 40ish hours so far. I haven't seen any bugs yet other than one last night that could have just been a burp in my internet - it returned me back twice to the same point when I was trying to enter the trucking yard near the Abernathy Farm.

I feel that I've already gotten my money's worth. So much so, that I went ahead and pre-ordered the Season Pass already.

I don't have a problem with the general idea of adding a settlement to the game or assisting people in their endeavors. I do have a problem with the tacked-on feel for it here where everyone sits on their thumbs and stares up into the rain because you're apparently the only one who understands "roofs". The game starts with a "fish out of water" concept, skipping the Vault experience for a "Yesterday you were living the Post War dream and chatting with your spouse, today you're in a post-apocalyptic wasteland two-hundred years in the future" plot that could be interesting but instead gets (so far) two lines of lip service and "Welp, let's go shoot some ghouls and collect some caps" you implausibly being the only one who knows how to convert six coffee pots into a bed frame. It all feels rather shallow and slapdash so far even by Bethesda's pretty lame standards for writing.

Of course, in standard Bethesda fashion, I'm still enjoying clambering over the countryside and poking my head into houses and abandoned factories but, God damn, I wish they could hire some friggin' half-decent writers and world builders.

While the settlement building isn't really doing it for me, I'm loving the crafting system for weapons and armor. I found a laser pistol called Old Faithful that does double damage when a target is at full health. After messing around with it on the crafting bench, I've turned it into a laser sniper rifle with night vision scope that still has the double damage mod. I've started popping heads off just about anybody I run into long before they know I'm there.

Yeah, Bethesda's writing has been pretty bad recently. Oblivion was the absolute nadir, I think Skyrimw as a little better but still towards the bottom of the barrel. I was going to say New Vegas wasn't that bad, but that was a different studio, so...

At least there are fewer bugs these days.

I don't really get too hung up on trying to resolve video game plot logic. I did not think I would enjoy the crafting and settlement system but I found it to be pretty fun. It's completely optional after the beginning.

Yeah. The main thing people had against NV was that it lacked as many interesting things to trip across as FO3 had.

Well, that and those damnable invisible walls (which I guess is more world building). Thankfully those could be modded out on PC.
