I put 20 hours into Terraria so far. Just for kicks, I wanted to see how much of the world I've explored, so I downloaded this map generator. I've never been so dejected and now regret starting on a large world.

My world so far. Sadly, using this took away some of the exploration factor in the game.

Just take your guy and start him on a small world. You'll keep your stuff and it'll be easy enough to get your house/NPCs back.

Took on my first boss today(Eye of Cthulu). Damn wiki suggested I would need about 110 shuriken, and I ran out of those before it went all eyeball mouth o' doom on me. Thank god I had the enchanted boomerang. On the other hand, it also said I would want to have 10-20 healing potions, and I only needed one(though, to be fair, I did use an ironskin potion, which combined with my shackle and full set of silver armor, gave me quite a bit of damage reduction). Either way, got enough demonite to make a sword and an axe, so woot at that.

What size world is that?

Do you mean axe-axe or pickaxe? You'll want a Demonite pick to cut through the Corruption and reach the orbs.

You can summon the Eye of Cthulu with a "Suspicious Looking Eye" made with six lenses at a demon altar (those weird spiky things you find underground).

Congratulations on your win!

The axe. I don't have the scales I'd need for the pickaxe, and since I'll get more demonite getting the scales(not to mention I was still using a copper axe), I went ahead and made the axe.

That's sorta actually how I summoned him. I found an eye in a chest, so I set up a multi-leveled set of platforms and called him down. Still haven't found an altar, though I have enough lenses to make several Eyes.

That's a large world. The purple is the dungeon, grey is corruption, green is a jungle, and the little bit of red in the center are my beautiful tunnels.

I started a small world just to see the difference. I was shocked to find silver ore after 20 mins and gold ore after 30 mins of digging/building.

That's a pretty nice generator. Looks like I've actually explored quite a ways on my large world...but still haven't hit lava yet. ><

Necropost to put a period on it all.

The future of Terraria has been highly debated as of late, not just with the community, but for us as well. The last year has been a crazy ride! When I started on this game, I just had a few ideas of what I thought would make a fun game. I had no idea that it would receive so much attention. I want to thank all of you for supporting us and making this game's success possible.

After a lot of internal debate, we have decided that it is time to move on. My wife and I are due to have another boy soon, and I want to spend some time getting to know him. I also want to spend the time recharging and bettering myself as both a programmer and game designer. I have learned a lot from working on Terraria and plan on using what I've learned, building upon it, and moving forward with another, even better project. However, we are still planning at least one more bug fix for Terraria.

For those that haven't already heard, Finn "Tiy" Brice has moved on to form Chucklefish and is heavily at work on an exciting new game called “Starbound”. It's looking to be a lot of fun, so make sure to check it out if you haven't already!

Thanks again for all your support, and I am very much looking forward to providing you with something much better than Terraria in the future!

They'll still be selling the game and stuff, of course, but it's now "done" in terms of development and updates.

I bought this game but just couldn't get into it like I did Minecraft. I think a major reason is I just don't know how to play the game that well. I mean I figured out how to make some basic weapons but that's about as far as I got.

Terraria is largely better than minecraft in most ways, except that lack of a third dimension. Unfortunately that's a pretty big deal.

The items in terraria are more plentiful and more interesting. The environment is far more threatening. There are significant challenges like boss battles to be met. And some of the fundamental game play seems more solid.

But without a third dimension the landscape is vastly less interesting to explore and building structures just doesn't bring the same sort of pride.

The adventuring is so much better in Terraria, but the creativity aspect is so much worse. Makes both games worth playing, but if you combined them... well, I don't actually know what you'd get.

Finally got around to playing the game abit more and have gotten more into it. The game is alot more fun on the adventure level than Minecraft but haven't had much desire to build anything like I have on Minecraft. Like others said both are good games in their own way. I got the Eyeball defeated but can't take out that damn Skeleton boss that guards the dungeon yet. I need to learn how to make buff potions I think.

I found the best way to fight the skeleton is to have an adequate arena prepared before hand. You need many levels of platforms to jump and fall between. It also helps to have a friend with you and a nearby bed so that if you die you can respawn nearby without him reseting.

Also saving up to buy the minishark helps a lot. Stack up on your favorite ammo, practice on your aim, and you should be able to kill ol skele before running out of ammo. In the chance you do run out he should be low enough to allow a short battle with your favorite weapon.
