Introduction of Aegolism at lvl 60 obfuscated the purpose of many cleric buffs.

To those who didn't follow the timeline, the idea was that Clerics would buff with 3 spells - Courage line, AC line and Symbol line. So you would need to stick 3 separate spells. Later on with Naltron's Mark and Marzin's Mark the symbol line became group spell alongside Heroic Bond (which is Courage line).

Aegolism line was a reward for lvl 60 (which was highest at the time) to allow clerics to do all 3 in 1 spell. The problem is, EQ has moved on since. The addition of Temperance is a good example, which is a lower version of Aegolism.

You do get slightly better HP/AC buff by using separate lines rather than 3-in-1 line.

In this day and age of EQ, I wonder what the point of these separate spells are. Nobody nowadays bother using 3 separate spells. All I hear is Temp, Virtue, Conv etc etc... For example, in 40s Clerics hardly ever do Resolution + Shield of Words + Symbol of Naltron (which was the only way in the original EQ). Instead, everybody uses Temperance which is 3-in-1 spell, albeit getting a little less HP/AC.

EDIT: Ok, so bearing in mind other class' buffs some come into good use, but still... something about it feels patched up. Lack of group version of AC buff, for instance. Overall it's a design mess.

In theory, all these spells still have purpose. In practice, they are all redundant other than the main ones you hear being asked for in POK. It's very strange then that developers keep insisting making separate spells.

Stacking

This is the deal:

Aego spells are designed to cover the symbol AND the pure HP buff (HP Type 1 category) AND the AC Statistic category buff.

Symbol spells are designed to stack with a spell like Bo9 or now Stealoak (10) because the 9 acts like the HP Type 1 category buff. You may ALSO add the AC Statistic buff to this.

As of the September 13, 2004 patch this spell no longer costs a peridot to cast. Clerics rejoice.

NO NONONO and NO

How many times do folks have to tell you - SYMBOLS DO NOT STACK WITH ANY OF THE AEGO-SPELLS ie - TEMPERANCE, VIRTUE etc -

Reason is if they did you would be a freaked out TANK!!!! SoE is NOT going to let us lumber around grunting like gorrillas an dragging our knuckles on the ground from all the hitpoints and armor class we are draggin with us.

Correction: mistakenly added:

Ward of Gallantry CLR/61 4: Increase AC by 54

Anybody know if this stacks or not?

Yes, all cleric symbols will stack with any cleric pure ac buff. What they do not stack with is the combo spells that combine the effects of symbol + ac + Faith/Heroism(i.e Temp, Aego, and Virtue).

There's a little confusion about what kind of HP buffs work well when you have a druid and a cleric in your group. Here is the low-down on what is the best combo:

The Cleric Aego/Virtue line will not stack with the Druid Blessing Of The Cabbage/Blessing Of The Nine line. However, the Cleric Symbol line will stack with the druid spells.

For comparison, this means that:

Hand Of Virtue: AC:72 HP:1405

Bot9 + Symbol Of Kazad: AC:86 HP:1528 ManaRegen:8

So even melee are better off with the Bot9/Symbol combo.

The most mana-efficient and effective raid-buffs are Kazad's Mark plus Blessing Of The Nine.

Meanwhile, the breaking point for clerics is whether or not Fo7 is also available, as Bot9 will also not stack with Zealot:

Zealot + Virtue (1855hp 108ac 8mana/tick)
beats Bot9 + Kazad + WoG(1528hp 86ac 8mana/tick)

But:
Bot9 + Kazad + WoG + Fo7 (1972hp 86ac 75str 70dex 8mana/tick)
beats Zealot + Virtue (1855hp 108ac 8mana/tick)

p.s. The clerid/druid combo may be a better raid-buff combo, but it is by no means more mana-efficient. Ward of Gallantry is also needed in the combo to boost the ac to 86, and at 425 mana/cast it far surpasses the cost of an MGB HoV. Only casting on the melee that truly need it will help, and most casters still prefer the extra 100hp and 8mana/tick over the ac lost by not taking Virtue.

Does it stack with virtue??

So what's the point of this spell, then? Why would anyone want to cast this and not virtue or even BOA/aego?

The point is, stacked with PoT9(druid buff) and this symbol you end up with more HP than HOV. In addition when you combine the PoT9 and Symbol you get mana regen.

Some casters prefer to have PoTG or PoT9 than Virtue/Aego. When grouped with folks like that, group versions of Symbols is all i use. It is pointless to give them single symbols, unless you expect heavy AOE damage :) It is quite usefull for anyone who prefers to have the PoT9 (Protection of the Nine) or PoTG (Protection of the Cabbage sp.) for their mana regen benefits. In most XP groups i stick the best symbol i have on the Enchanter, Tank, Puller (depending on situation) and slower (if not chanty) and group Symbol the rest. Trust me it is a very nice spell to have :) (Even though i'm stuck at Naltron's Mark atm :).. All in good time )
