Got this spell last nite. Tried it out on the Spirocs in Tim Deep. While I do not rely on it as a snare because the snare compoenent does not last long, I consider it a wonderful new DD spell and a very nice upgrade to Torbas for only 210 mana. The DD is 549 hp at 49, Torbas is only 220. The snare effect is a bonus IMO. Moreover, it does not overwrite or conflict with the Dark line. Consequently, you can have (and I did this last nite) two actual snares on a mob at one time. I love this spell.
Pretty sure this spell has a random duration...

This spell seems to do a resist check every tick. Sometimes the spell will last for a little while, but sometimes it will just wear off right after you cast it. The randomness of the duration makes this very unreliable as a snare spell or a melee debuff, but as far as necromancer direct damage is concerned, it does a good deal of damage for the mana. Since this spell has a recast delay similar to Ignite Bones, you can rotate the two spells for fast nuking damage, but be prepared to deal with resists.

Insidious Retrogression - our 49th lvl DD/Snare/Debuff appears to be allowing mobs to attempt a resist each tic.
That's how snare components work. Nothing new about the way this spell works. Multi-effect spells do tend to break earlier.

Just a correction, that's not how snare components work. Snare spells have a set duration, they don't have a resist check each tick like root lines. The druid and wizard snare lines both work this way, as does the necro darkness line and druid and necro epics.


And...

Multi-component spells (even Snare spells) check to see if they break at regular intervals. Most spells with a Snare component have been specially coded to bypass that check. Some have noted that, for example, the Necromancer epic weapon effect worked the same way until it was given special coding to change that.
Whether or not Insidious Retrogression should be changed, I don't know. I've certainly passed your concerns to the team.


So...

After some confusion, they're not quite sure whether it should test to see whether the Snare component breaks each tick. But, it definitely is testing is at the moment.

(As an aside, the damage is DD? (I've never actually cast it! I was under the impression it was a DoT. (Like the L49 Darkness spell. Which, since I thought it was a DoT, is what I have been using, if I need to DoT for damage.) Also, assumin' it is a DD, if you snare with Dooming Darkness and then cast IR, will the damage still be dealt? Or just a message to the effect the spell did not take hold? (Oki, maybe I should just test this for myself! *Grin*))

I guess we'll have to wait and see whether the Snare component is changed. Personally, I probably won't have much use for it, if it continues to test every tick...

But, that should explain the random duration thing...
