Languages

Almost every race in Norrath has its own unique language, and with a little practice you can learn them all.

What is the best way to develop your different language skills? Which languages are the most and least useful to learn? Who should be developing their language skills, and why?

Post your strategies on how to best use the language skills, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

My hubby and I just learned each others language. I got to be master in Lizzardman, and he has now mastered Halfling. You do NOT, have to put points into the language to be able to get better. You just have to spam each other a TON....hoping to learn a lot more.

How did you and your husband learn each others languages? Did you have different accounts? I tried to make another account but I couldn't. Please let me know how you and your husband were playing at the same time. Thank you in advance.

Hail a spiderling,

i play only on Tallon Zek, and if someone doesn't speak your language, you probably shouldn't be talking to them anyways.

Do you have to wait for a language to become avalible at your guild before you can learn it or can you learn any language at any time if you find a teacher?

You have to wait until it becomes available at your class guild. After putting 1 point into it, you have the choice of speaking and practicing it.
Only way to learn them all (rare languages)
# Jun 15 2001 at 12:40 PM Rating: Default
Only way i've found is to have many friends willing to learn one rare language each up to 92 (91 for excellant rating, and you teach one below what you know i think)

then you all get together and trade.
this takes a long time. i'm the elder teir'dal guy and at 22 i've only found 21 points across my levels to spend (although i've heard you get more free points at higher level to spend on what you want).

Or you can wait 'til you're high enough so that every one can be practiced at guild, then you can put one point into each one, teach a friend each to skill level 1, have him/her put another point into each, and teach someone, 'til, if you're popular enough, someone will have learned every single language fluently by only having put one point into each. Then he teaches everyone else in the line. You can vary how many people/points/languages of course. I'd think it'd be kinda cool to be fluent in every language. It could be a guild project. Just a thought. Anyway, be safe, all. Have fun, and leave some time for RL=)

It is my aim to learn every language in the game. I have learned most of the player speakable languages, that's easy. What I don't know is how to learn NPC languages, other that saving up 100 training points and stuffing it in them. There must be a way, and if anyone knows it I would be happy to learn

As a Bard [level8 wood elf out of Kelethin] language skill should be paramount. I am on Xegony and have learned Dwarvish with some bad Barbarian and Gnomish. I would share any languages I learn with others.

That just sounds odd, but anyway. I am a bard on the Druzzil Ro server and I would be interested in learing (and donating for) any languages you would care to teach. In trying to roleplay a bard I want to learn all the languages of the land and can now speak all of the common languages at excellent. Please leave me a message or send me a tell in game.

Also, below someone mentioned that you could teach yourself a language by training one or two points in it at your guild and then speaking to yourself in group say. I didn't think you could speak in group say unless you were in a group, and therefore not alone... Can anyone explain or expand on this?
Thanks,
Nystir Blackrose

Hello!
Yes, you can teach yourself a language, albeit very slowly, by simply using it in conversation. A more efficient method is to get together with a person who desires a language you have and has one which you don't, and trade.

I wish I could help you out, Nystir, but I have left Druzzil Ro for another server. :(
I had a TON of languages and would have gladly spent the time teaching them to you for free. As it is, I ended up giving away everything I owned and deleted the characters I had. My friends were the lucky recipients of around 100K plat worth of stuff.

Whenever you get the little message saying "Your language skills have improved" you have increased in skill. You hafta zone to be able to speak the new language or see your rating in it in the skills section under persona.

Has anyone noticed the large amount of language a Dark Elf Necromancer can speak when they start?
Right when they start at level 1 I could speak over 5 speeches and now i believe its 7 or 8.

I would love to learn new languages. It is interesting to see how your faction changes. Also, check out the different prices when you speak to a vendor when you speak to them in their own tongue. Anytime you see me, ask if I have time to teach you a new language. I bet I will make time 8~) Both of my characters already know more than one language, so let's see which one we can trade, OK?

If there is anyone on E'ci willing to teach me, I would be willing to donate. I already have all of the player race languages, along with faerie, gnoll, goblin, orc, froglok, and there are a couple others I think. Unfortunately, I am not proficient in most of these languages. I would also like to learn additional ones. Please send me a tell sometime.

One other question: What is the language "Combined" and who speaks/understands it?

More Language RP

I would like to see languages play a bigger role in EQ.

1. I like the idea of language affecting faction (you get better faction when you speak in the NPC's native language). At a MINIMUM, Verant should implement this. There should also be a faction hit - speaking Teir'Dal within earshot of good-aligned NPCs should give you *worse* faction.

2. When you create a character, you should get your native language plus one other language of your choice, unless race/class dictates the second (e.g. Rogues always get Thieves' Cant, and Half Elves speak both Common and Elven, Erudites get Erudian and Old Erudian). Neat Bonus: let Half Elf Rogues get three languages (all predetermined), and let bards get a third language of their choice.

3. Any language should be learnable at any time (from a guildmaster NPC), but not necessarily in any city - e.g. you can't learn Erudian in Freeport from any NPC.

4. People often pay for binds and SoW. Why not have people willing to translate for pay? (Someone else here suggested this.) EQ is the ultimate exercise in capitalism, and I like anything that adds to the usual game of "killkillkill".

5. There could be spells (most likely Enchanter) that allowed fluency in certain languages for a limited period of time. For balance, perhaps this should not stack with the racial illusion spells.

6. I would also like to see Druid/Shaman spells that allowed conversation with wolves and bears!

I love teaching and speaking all the languages of Norrath(24 in total). I speak them all at excellent now and have them all on their own hotkey. Makes it easier to change between languages that way. I try and speak to each person in their own Racial language while traveling around Norrath. it makes the game a bit more fun. I only use "Common" when speaking ooc and if I'm in a group.
I wish people would use the languages more, but if you do, be properred to take a bit of crap from the "Human" players. It annoys the hell out of them when they can't understand what you are saying, especially the Newbie humans.
My standard answer is "If you don't like it, learn the language or shut thy mouth." Just keep roll playing and have fun with it.
If you see me on Drinal, send me a tell. If I have time I will teach you any language you want(Donations for my time welcome)

Krynn says in Elvish,"Safe journey and good hunting to all."

Note: You can make some money from teaching. My best so far is a 100pp donation from a 52 Necro. I taught him Halfling and Gnoll to Excellent. 100pp - Not bad for 30 minutes of sitting and teaching.
