Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

My recommendation - about a million metal bits. They won't skill you up, but you'll need 'em. Then combine 1 metal bit and 1 water in the forge to start making toolboxes. You probably won't be able to sell them to players, but the merchants will buy 'em back for about a silver or two less than your component cost.

Is there a place in Qeynos to buy sharpening stones?
RE: sharpening stones
# Apr 06 2001 at 5:28 AM Rating: Decent
Nope Sorry to say, but you must travel to Erudin to find sharpening stones. I used Erudin to start skilling up my secondary blacksmith character. As long as you have the cash, this place is great for skilling up. But just remember, Erudin is like a ghost town. There are no customers in Erudin that are looking for armor. But if you find one, you are lucky. Most Erudites I've seen in the game play the pure spellcaster classes. Unless they are clerics, there is business for blacksmiths here. But the area for skilling is sweet. It is nice and tight, with a short distance between the shops selling metal for metal bits, water, molds, sharpening stones, and the forge. I spent much time here as a Eruditian cleric. But as soon as I hit skill 115 from skewers, I moved back to Qeynos. The store in Qeynos hills sells sheet metal and all the medium banded mold you will need. Qeynos is a good place to sell banded, as well as everfrost and halas. I've gotten great profits and used it all for skilling up in Qeynos area.

I'd have to agreee with what Tenniel wrote, but depending on your cash flow, you might want to start out with Metal bits instead of weapons. The premise behind this is that you're going to have to make them eventually anyways, and the components are easier to find than rusty weapons.

First of all, if you are liked in Freeport... move there. I know everyone has their choices, but I know for a fact that Freeport is the easiest place to start smithing for two major reasons:

1. Everthing you will ever need to get you from skill 1 to 175 is right there in Freeport.

2. MOST information on blacksmithing you can find on the net, is based on freeport. This is very important.

First thing you should do to start off in blacksmithing is put in 1-15 practice points in Blacksmithing. The more points, the better. You will be sharpening rusty weapons till they are trivial at skill 27. The hard thing about this is finding rusty weapons. You can find them on decayed skellies or buy from vendors for about 1 gold. Once you have sharpened the weapon, it becomes a tarnished weapon if you are successful. To sharpen a weapon, place a rusty weapon and a sharpening stone into a REGULAR forge then hit combine. After you are done, sell the tarnished weapon back to the vendor and go sharpen more rusty weapons. If you want more detailed information on skilling up, you can go to this website and printout this 91 paged manual on Blacksmithing. I refer to this as the Smithing Bible because without it, I would have never reached skill 175.

http://www.sbchuzzah.com/Smithing-I.htm

There are 3 very important attributes you should know about.

1. INT- The higher the intelligence of your character, the faster you will skill up.
2. WIS- The higher the wisdom of you character, the better success rate you will have.
3. Patience- I believe this to be the most important of all. Be patient, it will come. Good luck :)

# Apr 03 2001 at 3:51 PM Rating: Default
There's actually a shop in East Freeport called Hallard's resales (not sure if name is correct) where the vendors in the buiding all sell unlimited amounts of rusty weapons. So there is no need to go hunt decaying skeletons and orc pawns to find those rusty little blades. This is yet another reason why Freeport is the best place to work on your smithing skills

I am still stuck at 175 WTHell. But I have had good success with fine plate since last patch. Here is what I have done:
bracers made 7 failed 2 time
vampbracers made 1 didnt fail
greaves- made 1 failed 1
breastplate= made 1 didnt fail
boots= made 1 didnt fail
helm= made 1 didnt fail

Although my success rate wasn't perfect and I didn't skill up even once, I now have enough money to sell this visible suit and have enough cash to make another one. I have already 8 visible suits orders I have to make for guild members. For cash purposes, I tell them to give me 1k plat, then I give them the suit along with the extra money I didn't use. Of course, I took my labor cut too. This is working out great. I just wish I could raise a skill or two. Oh well, I have a much bigger problem hehe finding and making leather padding.

I went for the mass production aproach... got 24 sheets of material...put them in the bank. gated to FP forge...got 24 gorget molds... ran to bank...got 3 backpacks of sheets...gated to freeeport forge. With 24 attempt, 156 wis, 93 str and 87 int, I failed 3 times, got up to 178 skill...repeated again, failed 2 times and went up only 1 skill to 179. You might want to try it that way...crap I just noticed you were a pally...might want to try and get some of your guildies to help you lug around all that sheet. Anyways...that's my 2cp worth.

What is the highest DMG on a 1h weapon that a master blacksmith can make? (For a resonable cost)
RE: Blacksmithing Weapons
# Apr 03 2001 at 4:41 AM Rating: Excellent
I believe around 8 dmg. But smithing weapons, really isn't worth it. There are so many magical weapons in EQ that have better damages and faster delay times, that it is almost a waste of time running around looking for the molds. I suggest for you to save about 20 or 30 plat and you can easily find someone selling a really nice magical weapon for that price. I have made a few weapons for the heck of it, but they do not sell well at all. The best weapon to make for resale, well not really a weapon, is skinning knives. All tailors need these to down grade the quality of the pelts used in making tailored items. Believe me, you will need one also. You will be making leather padding using LQ cat, wolf, and bear pelts when you start making Fine Plate. Hope this helps you a little.

I hate to drop a secret to some possible business rivals, but what the heck. hehe. I have been using Everfrost for all my leather padding. There, the animals and spiderlings are plentiful. I just sit in the 3 igloo area and tailor away. There are polar bear cubs, spiderlings, and white wolfs everywhere. And sometimes, the polar bear cubs drop HQ bear skins which are easily sold for 30plat. Leather padding is a pain in the butt, but I have seen players selling stacks for 200pp. I would rather save the cash. Skilling up with fine plate is not easy. Good luck to you.

Magic Banded Boots?

The magical boots are good only for kicking magical creatures. That is a bonus for young melee classes that dont have alot of magical armor, unless it is a twinked young warrior. A good example would be the Will-o-Wisp. They cant be hit with anything except magical items. So basically thats what these boots do.

Gauntlets and cloak are not that easy to make, nor are they cheap. You should try making mantles first. This should take you to 168 or so. If you reach 155 and see that even with 40 combines you do not increase skill (even if mantles are not trivial) change up to cloaks. I skipped gauntles all together. And as for your INT and WIS, they should be just fine. I was making progress at 85 WIS and INT the same rate as when I raised my INT and WIS to 95. Hope this helps

I know what you're talking about on the sharpening kits - they're listed in the official stratgy guide that you buy at the computer game stores.

Never found one myself and gosh knows I've looked high and low through the game and across every web site I could find on smithing - gonna guess that they were probobly in a beta version, used to be around and were removed, or are supposed to be around but haven't been installed yet like the steel bow staffs listed in the fletching book.

It'd be really nice if they'd put them in though - god knows how much easier it'd be to level your smithing if you could just sharpen weapons in the field.

I'm not sure what a "sharpening kit" might be unless you mean a forge. And the Rivervale sewing kit is made in the Rivervale Forge by a hairfoot (halfling, as others call them). I have a list of forge locations as well as mold locations. I don't explicitly list the recipe for the Vale Sewing Kit but you can either find it or figure it out using the regular sewing kit formula as a guide. I believe it takes High Quality ore but otherwise it's the same as the regular one. If you're still having trouble, visit my web page and complain to me. =)

Best place to smith is Freeport. How to get faction there (if it is even possible for a troll), you need to use Allakhazam's awesome site here. Notice the "Faction" button over on the left. Once you're done, give Alla some money.

Note that some races have "faction caps", unless I am mistaken. Failing a good rep in Freeport, your other option is Neriak. Believe it or not, I have similar problems as a high elf. Seems like not everyone is fay-friendly, especially around Qeynos. I'm not taking the easy way out and trying to make them like me, though. =)

Note that Neriak sells the SMALL sectional molds in Toadstool. If you find a place where they sell plate molds (any size) in Neriak, please post here. Thanks!
Stuck at 175
# Mar 27 2001 at 3:37 AM Rating: Default
Akkk I am stuck at skill 175. I am making Fine Plate now. So far, I have made 5 bracers with one failure, and a failure on a pair of sleeves. I didn't skill up at all. Making fine plate is a real pain. Finding the cash to fund skilling is one thing, that is why I am in Lake of ill Omen saving cash and gain all the levels I put on hold while I was smith training. Second, ahhhh leather padding. Not easy to come by unless you are in Everfrost. I go here when I really need to mass produce leather padding. I started making leather padding when my tailoring skill were in late teens. My success rate on padding is like 75% at skill 19. In Everfrost, there are tons of spiderlings and pelts to go around. You can use any LQ cat, wolf, or bear pelt. All padding is the same size. I've seen someone selling peather padding stacks in EC for over 200pp. Third, MQ ore. You can get kinda spoiled in HighHoldKeep because the guy there sells MQ BLOCKs, so you don't need to worry about making blocks from large bricks. And also, you can load a ton of blocks of MQ ore in the bank, considering it is 100 feet or less from ore vendor in HighKeep. Otherwise you will be like me, walking forever from steamfont windmills to felwithe. Unless of course, if you have gate :) Akk I am a paladin, we have no gate hehe.

I was looking at the stats. It seems that for the price and the AC, ornate chain is not a bad armor selection. The only real bid difference I can see, is that fine plate can be dyed. I know that fine plate has a few AC more than ornate chain, but considering how much heavier the fine plate is, the AC gain with fine plate may not be worth it. Hmm just a though,

whoa...Ornate chain takes HQ ore...which is drop only. I hear you can farm it from vendors in Everfrost/Halas, but that doesn't sound reliable.

And you're not stuck. You're just coming to the (painful) realization that the days of taking 50 plat and getting 10 or more skillups from banded are over. Most skill with and average int/wis will get 2-4 skillups per 20 combines...don't be surprised that you didn't get one from 6 attempts. Fine plate is the finest non-cultural armor we can make, and it's a bread winner when you get your skill high enough. Until then, it's going to be painful.

For leather padding, don't forget that you can reduce high and medium quality pelts with a skinning knife, although you might more plat if you sell the HQ cat and bear pelts to tailors.

Paddint itself costs on average about 5 plat, so if you're paying more than 100 plat a stack, you're paying a high premium. But it also takes a long time to hunt 20 pelts for that stack, so don't argue with the tailor selling it...they're just trying to make a living like you are.

As for funds, try to get a grant. Find a friend who wants make a gift of a full suit or outfit a twink to fund you. I made a full suit as a wedding gift for a friend. I got a large advance to purchase the materials (using the Steamfont-Ak'Anon-Felwithe-Kelethin route), a decent profit, free advertising, and a whole guild as customers after.

Hilt mold can be found in Butcherblock from Kaila Rucksack, outside the Warrior's Guild in East Cabilis (as can the dagger blade mold), possibly in Emerald Armor in Felwithe but I don't think so, definitely in Vilithe and Bardo's Imported Goods in East Freeport, probably at McPherson's in Halas, from Merchant Nluolian in Kelethin, from Putad or Ungia in Neriak's Foreign Quarter, pretty sure from Ironforge Estates in Qeynos, and from Spinner in West Karana.

Dagger blade molds are at Ironforge Estates in Qeynos, Everhot Forge (upstairs) in North Kaladim, McPherson's Bloody Weapons in Halas, Emerald Armor in Felwithe, and outside the Warrior's Guild in East Cabilis.

My uncertainty in the hilt molds is because I do not have them listed as being available at Emerald Armor, McPherson's or Ironforge's but I seem to remember forging a sword or two a long time ago and I wonder where I got the hilt mold. As usual, if you find one somewhere that I do not know about, post here. Thanks!

So where can a Troll get large banded molds? I'm just gonna powersmith till I get there, but I'd rather powersmith with large molds so that I can actually use any peices I get lucky with.

So, short of moving to Oguk or commuting between there and Grob, is there anywhere else that a Troll Shadow Knight can go to get large banded molds?

BTW, hope you're twinking, this stuff is expensive for a primary. =)
