The Ogre

race logoThe Ogre starts off in Ogguk and starts off hunting in the Feerrott and Innothule Swamp. Ogres are considered an evil race and are killed on sight in the good cities of Norrath. What is the best strategy for playing an Ogre? What zones and cities should you take him to and which ones should you avoid? Which factions should you work on improving, and which factions should you be wary of decreasing? How can you safely play your Ogre in the good areas? What are the best quests for the beginning Ogre? Where are the best shops? How should you role play your Ogre?

Post your strategies on how to best play a Ogre, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Advantages of ogre shamen over iksar

I play an Iksar Shammy, 40th level, and I'm seriously considering deleting and making an ogre shammy instead. Let's look at the advantages vs. disadvantages.

Ogre:

1. Hightest STR and STA in the game, highest base abilities of any race, period.

2. Can slam an opponent (free attack), which can disrupt spellcasting.

3. Are unstunnable from the front (a HUGE plus).

4. Are welcome in the other evil cities of Norrath.

5. Have more armor choices, such as the powerful Jaundiced Bone items, which are off-limits to Iksar.

6. Higher innate WIS than trolls.

7. The new "out of combat" status has apparently rendered useless the iksar/troll innate regen.

Iksar:

1. Are welcome in Cabalis (but almost nowhere else!)

2. Can forage (but shammies summon their own food anyway!).

3. Are small enough to fit into smaller rooms (but ant potions are cheap!).

4. No longer have racial experience penalties (same with ogres!).

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I have an Ogre Shammy. No-stun in front is very helpfull (especially solo).

No need ant potions, shammies get shrink spell.

KoS is not really a problem these days. You are not KoS in Neriak. Do giant quests in South Ro and you will be non-KoS to most of Freeport. Not many other old-world places you need to go. Crescent Reach is not KoS. You can get non-KoS to Cabilis with work.

No complaints with this choice of race.

Thank Rallos you is bigger now but stick to one character and get them into at least the 30's before starting all those others... Killing is easy and others have said it in previous posts...

At my level I love getting a bunch of friends together and killing things in greigs end... at low levels i loved killing frogloks in upper guk (L8-18)

Hey, there is no problem with not being KOS in hummie cities... just dont burn your bridges to neriak. On the flip side since POP who cares... use the book and do all your business in POK and go hog wild grouping with Darkies and trolls and dumb lizards Kill every Guard in sight in the commons. Guards dont drop good loot anyways... and some quests for good loot are started in KOS zones.
I got to L12 in Black Burrow and am No longer KOS to qeynos quards.. surefall is a diferent story. Dont let this fool you either, to go from north qeynos to south you must walk past bard guild, they dont care how many gnolls you whacked they will still fight you... if you kill them you become KOS again only this time you are deep inside a hostile enamy city full of high level guards :) I got to L16 in Crushbone and am no longer KOS to kelithin guards... of course the merchants still hate me Kelithin is a pain in the rump, and you dont fit inside any buildings. So who cares about faction? Your adventuring group thats who... nothing is worse than trying to drag some Hummies and elves through the feerott to Rathe and haveing them squished by the wandering boucers near the bridge! Ok it is kinda funny since they always laugh at me in commons for same reason.
Also If you actually improve faction with guards and merchants it makes loot dumping and banking that much easier. you can only carry so many back packs.

Paludal Caverns until 24 or 25. If you don't have Luclin expansion then go to Lake of Ill Omen in Kunark. Another option is Lake Ratheater. But its hard to find groups there. You might find a group in South Karana at the Aviak Towers (aka Karana Fried Chicken - KFC).

i'm wanting to make a shad but i dont kno if i should do ogre or iksar. ive got a friend that says an iskar is a better choice overall, but im turnin into a large-race fanatic and im thinking ogre. im really just goin for whichever is better all across the board, not just one thing or another that one race gets thats special, which to both ogres and iksars. (im bad about checking up on these things so send any info to nottoonrml@aol.com)

I think Ogre's Should steer away from the sk class,Yes they have the innate stun resistance, and high str and stam ,but they have LOOOOW agility (AC suffers cause of that) Aslo they have LOOOOOOW Int. wich sk's have to be the most mana dependant hybrid.Only reason i am posting this is because i have played both of these race class combo's and beleive it or not my dark elf sk does more dps than the Ogre.yes the ogre does more melee damage but with the huge amount of extra mana ,the dark elf can sink so many of those spear of disease line of spells it isn't funny, anyway that is what i have abservered, but i wouldn't worry about who is best, just play what you like ,it's all good =)

The big advantage of ogres is the 'No Stun From Frontal Attacks' ability. For a tank class this is priceless. Regen is nice but you can get regen gear and it is likely you will have a healer in your group. The other 'down side' of Iksars as tank classes is the inability to wear most forms of plate armor. There is a lot of gear that has great AC that Iksars can wear but its mostly higher level stuff. Its not a big downside but can be a mild inconvenience.
RE: shadowknight
# Jul 14 2005 at 12:36 PM Rating: Default
Stats aren't really an issue at high end anyways. I'd say the stun factor much outweighs the possible loss to stats. Agi only raises AC indirectly and is like 7 agi for one point of AC (or something equally ridiculous) and as a hybrid class you get less mana per int anyways so you can make up for it with pure mana on your items.

Then again, my SK's pretty well twinked, but I definitely don't have any issues with being an ogre. That stun resist is hugely noticable too in comparison to the small amount of stats I've lost.

As an add-on I'd like to say that the 60 (that's right) points of strength more that ogres start with over iksars as well as the 52 more stamina are much more esteemed than the agi and int, in my opinion. The regen can be easily overlooked as well.

Trolls now begin in Neriak. :)

Ogres are stronger, more hit points and can not be stunned from the front.

Trolls are a bit more agile, and can regen.

Choice is yours.

Let me tell you about an idea i had one day. I was running through Grater faydark and i had accedently attacked a nexus at the wizzy spires. Needless to say that i was killed Instantly. I was extreamly mad because i lost my exp. Through my hatered i studied the creature and i devised the most extravagant scheme ever. I was wondering if my fellow Citizens of norrath would aid me. Darkies and Lighties come together in a mass horde to take one down. "What's in it for me" a person might ask. Well i think that not only the feeling you get from uniting with all of the inhabitants of norrath to squash a common evil but a great possibilty of an uber pay off and Extream exp or maybe nothing just a cold hard defeat.I am not really sure if they drop anything or if they even give exp. They are most likely the least killed Npc in the game. I have heard of one or two being killed but to my knowlage no loot has ever been identified. There are only a couple of reasons why i have not been able to find the loot items either 1. The uber guild who took one down came up with an awsome item that they dont want to get nerfed because of 1000000 crying lowbies saying its too powerfull so they did not add it to new item lists 2. None of them have ever been killed 3. Normal Loot for lvl of mob 4. No loot :( Now i am not really sure yet of the master plan but i am thinking along the lines of a massive head on attack group attack at random with no aperant stratagey.A person could even make a mule char and lvl to 5 or 6 toe just for this battle.Toe to Toe with the Unchecked Evil of the world. Or i have got a more methodical aproach. Either way i could be just stupid or really tired but that is my idea and i am willing to set up shop on any server. e-mail me at massive_nexus_strike@YHAOO.COM if you have any ideas, you want to join (( lvl is of no importance 1-65 doesnt matter Class either warriors clerics shaman monks i am in need of warm bodies :) )) or you just want to flame about how stupid i am either way i will welcome your emails and i will try my very best to email you back .No matter what it says. More information on nexus is always welcome. E-mail me and give it a chance.

Happy hunting and good luck.

I was wondering if I maxed out the base Stamina (150)on a Ogre warrior would it make that big of a differance as to the base stamina I have on my Troll warrior(122)as in HP's at, say lvls 55-65? I'm lvl 55 now with about 4 no-drops items, not sure if I should remake him or not

Sure, it will make a difference. Probably net you another 115 HP with a STA of 150 at level 60. Is it worth working up another PC? Up to you but I think not. The big reason I like Ogres over Trolls is the 'no stun from frontal attacks' feature.

The regen is nice for trolls. Throw in a couple of AA pts into extra regen and you probably will make up the difference of 115 HP. What would 115 HP gain you? One or two extra hits from level 55+ mobs. The regen will likely do the same.

So, my thought is don't give up the troll just because of HP.

ok.. i got 2 ogres, and never cared about faction, even before i got luclin and only had the trilogy.. my first char was an ogre war, and he grew up kiling guards in ec, my bst still tries to take on Slate, doesnt succeed, but he tries =P
the only prob i have found is for quests, like war epic, when i get him to that lvl, i will then need to do factionwork, but till then, who cares =P i was born KoS for a reason, so why not stay KoS
Newbie Zone and No Drop Armor?
# Jan 09 2003 at 2:27 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I've toyed with a few different ogre characters up to level 9 or so. My current character is an ogre shaman.

The Feerrott is not that bad a newbie zone, though it can't compare to the North Qeynos or Paineel newbie areas. (Why does it not compare? Plague rat tails and no drop newbie armor items that sell to vendors for good money. Need more? Easily located mobs and numerous mobs that DON'T add. Until (If?) the ogres get the no-drop newbie armor and the associated money that comes with it, you're better off going to Qeynos or Paineel if you have POP.)

However, assuming you don't have it:

For your first few levels, hunt froglok tads and lizard man broodlings. They drop cloth armor, so there's no need to spend any of your cash on that. The lizard men drop lizard meats, which you can give to your guild members or use for baking. (See the link near the bottom.) A caveat: The froggies and lizards BOTH add, so be careful that you don't end up with more than you can handle. The tadpole fleshes can be redeemed to the Shaman guildmaster for a positive faction hit (and no negative ones, IIRC) and a spell scroll that sells for more than the fleshes do.

You can find your targets (and bats and snakes and beetles as well) southeast of Oggok. Follow the path to the south from Oggok until it splits. Then take the east road to the split near the altar. Then proceed south until you hit the end of the path. Bash stuff. Sell when you must. Wash, rinse, repeat until about level three or four.

After a while, you'll be tough enough to handle the spiderlings and spiders in the northeast part of the zone. Like the frogs and lizards, these will swarm you, so be careful. Occasionally you might even find a low level marsh bear cub to pound. These can be used for tattered armor, which isn't much, but is better than nothing. The loom is in the shaman guild along with the pattern merchant, so save those ruined pelts, and buy more if you see them for sale.

Once you get tough enough, you can start to hunt the bear cubs, and the lizard men camps on the Oggok side of the bridge (Probably about level 6 to take a three-lizard camp solo). Make sure to kill the mystics first - they can heal the others as well as blind you, and can quickly make a sure thing into a sure defeat.

Around level 9 or 10, you can head across the bridge to try your hand at the lizard men warriors in the camps, but they're likely to be too powerful without aid. (When I tried this, there was a Bouncer that was walking from camp to camp and killing ALL of the lizards in the camps! I reported this as a bug, but I haven't checked it out again since.) You can also check out the undead camps in the northwest and western ends of the zone. Make sure to con these, though - some of them can be nasty. There's also rumored to be a larger concentration of the full grown marsh bears in the southeast portion of the zone, though I cannot confirm this. There is a (half elf bard?) on the east side of the zone in the south, and she loves to hunt ogre newbies, so be careful.

Stay away from the temples on the south side of the river near the Cazic-Thule entrance. The lizards on that side of the river fork are NOT for newbies, and will filet your liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Ditto for the southwest corner of the zone. There's a portal to the Plane of Fear here, and spectres (Two? Three?) that guard the cavern leading to it. If you're a newbie, just understand that spectres are death incarnate to you, and stay away.

Most of the wandering monsters on the Rathe Mountains side of the zone are either non-agressive or too weak to pose a real threat to an ogre of the appropriate level one-on-one. (Your mileage may vary, of course.) Giant bats and lizardmen scouts were the two that I saw most often. (Non-aggressive and too weak, respectively.)

Once you've reached a level where the lizardmen and bears no longer give you any xp, it's time to leave. You'll be back, though. There's always those lizards to kill outside Cazic-Thule, and a good ogre never misses a meal...

Lizard-On-A-Stick! It's good!

And a question: Who do we bug at SOE to get them to remember to put in the Ogre newbie armor quests? (And the Erudite, Barbarian, Troll armors as well!) They're certainly having no trouble remembering to work with the bughunt that is POP, but they've forgotten what they were working on BEFORE it came out!

Well, after comparing a lot of notes with my friend's Troll BL and my Ogre BL we have decided that the Ogre 'No Stun from frontal attacks' is a lot more useful than the regen for a BL. Regen is nice but a little redundant when you have heal spells. Even our lowest heal spell brings up health faster than troll/iksar regen.

Yeah but what no one thinks of anymore is the roleplaying and having fun aspects of the game. As a 55 warrior I am lovin life withthe no stun ability but when i start My beast lord it will be a troll, 2 reasons, I've never played a troll before and I want a pet alligator. The bear is neat but you dont see many troll BST.. usually only Barbarian and Vah Shir.

I don't care for the newbie area in Oggok, but it's to the left along the path after you leave the Oggok zone, past some huts. Once you get to level 4 or so, move to Grobb. I find that to be a much better area (Bashers, free food on the ground, better visibility)
