This task is offered by Magus Burlshin in Shard's Landing. He's found at the crystal druid ring just north of the zone-in from Erillion, the City of Bronze.

This task is part of the "Crystal Circle Builders" achievement.

You must have at least kindly faction with "Crystal Circle Builders" in order to request the task (see this quest entry for details about raising faction).

Magus Burlshin say 'Ah it's you _____. You've done more than enough for us. We couldn't possibly ask you to gather any more crystals or do any other [tasks]. Besides, we've become a bit worried about the [effect] they have on people. And not just people, but all living things.'

You say, 'What tasks?'

Magus Burlshin says 'We understand that these shards are related in some way to the power of Fear, and it's clear that long contact with something like that will have an effect on people. But there is something more going on here. Shards found in the, well, older portions of Norrath have reacted differently than those found in the new locations we've recently discovered, like this one we call Shard's Landing. We'd be grateful if you could [help us] understand what this difference is.'

You say, 'Help us?'

Magus Burlshin says 'Of course I've used up every scrap of crystal I've been given. Besides, we'll need crystal from specific places to test what we're looking at. Here is a simple testing kit... well, simple for you, extremely challenging for me to make for you. I'll need you to head into the heart of the strange places discovered since the Fear Fall. Use the testing kit to ensure that you have a shard with enough of the oddity we seek, then bundle them in the kit and bring them back. We'll talk when you return.'

You have been assigned the task 'Shard Experiences'.

Magus Burlshin would like you to explore the magical essences of the crystals that have fallen from the sky. To do that, he has built a device that analyzes the magical power of objects. All you need to do is get these objects in close proximity of the analyzer. It will do the rest.



Explore the crevasse where the enormous crystal is lodged 0/1 (Shards Landing)

Task Window Says: First, Burlshin would like you to explore the crevasse that seems to be where the power of Fear left the Sepulcher of Order. This may require a leap of faith.

Allow yourself to fall into the crevasse in the middle of the Shard's Landing crater.

Test the air in the area where the Alaran Triumvirate died 0/1 (Sepulcher of Order)

Task Window Says: Burlshin suggested that the best place to start would be where the crystals may have been created. Seek out the place where the Triumvirate died and test the air to see if measurable traces of magic remain.

The analyzer hums and you feel air moving around the box. After a moment the box starts to get very warm. A moment later the humming stops and the temperature of the box drops to normal.



Test a fear shard from near the hole in Shard's Landing 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Find a crystal that remains near the potential creation point. Burlshin knows there are some lying about near the large crystal in Shard's Landing.

Fear shards are ground spawns around the hole in the middle of the Shard's Landing crater.

The crystal radiates with life but nothing happens when you draw near it.

The box does nothing at all.

The device lets out a terrible, screeching howl. The tiny crystal shard in your hand shivers and shatters in to pieces too numerous to count. The tiny cloud of fear dust is sucked into the analyzer. The screeching continues for several more seconds before finally, mercifully, going silent.



Use the analyzer on the huge crystal in Shard's Landing 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Certainly the large crystal itself will tell us something about the magics we are encountering. Test it.

Head to the crystal in the middle of the crater and right-click the analyzer.

Magical energy spikes out of the analyzer, striking the huge crystal. The energy disipates the moment it strikes, leaving the distinct flavor of carrots in the air.



Analyze one of the crystal shards found in the newly revealed locations 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Now you need to test shards that have fallen into the newly discovered areas. There is a tendency for the locals to pick them up, so you may have to liberate one.

Get hold of another "Small Glowing Fear Shard" and right-click the analyzer.

The tiny crystal is pulled from your hand, slamming against the box of the analyzer. As you watch, the crystal appears to dissolve into the material of the box. After just a moment, it is gone. The box vibrates slightly and makes a sound much like a large cat purring.



Speak with Magus Burlshin about other crystals to analyze 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Return the the Magus to see where he wishes you to go next.

You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

Magus Burlshin says 'A, yes. Welcome back.' The magus reaches out and lightly touches the analyzer. It seems to shiver a little. 'You are doing very well. I am now convinced that the Alarans or one of their gods are having some sort of influence on the crystals you have examined. I think we could benefit from a careful analysis of a crystal that has not been anywhere near an Alaran. I have a few of them left from other experiments. Take this one for the analyzer.'

Magus Burlshin hands you a "Tiny Pale Fear Shard".



Analyze one of the crystal shards found in older locations 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The shards that have fallen into locations far from Shard's Landing may prove to be different in nature. Test one of those.

For a brief moment both the analyzer and the crystal you are holding fade out of existence. Only the box returns.



Analyze objects until you can find something that matches the magic the analyzer is now tuned to 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Now that the analyzer has mapped out the essences, you need to find a magical power that matches ones that it cannot categorize. Burlshin expects that you may find it in the bodies of Alarans.

Go to the Underground City in Shard's Landing and kill Alarans until you loot a Chunk of Alaran Flesh. With this item on your cursor, right-click the analyzer.

The bloody hunk of flesh dries up as the analyzer intakes all of its moisture. The flesh turns to dust.



Deliver 1 Magical Analyzer to Magus Burlshin 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Return the device to its creator so he can examine what you have learned.

Your faction standing with Crystal Circle Builders got better.

Well, you've certainly been busy. The device has absorbed the magical signatures of the things you have found for it. It seems that there is a slight difference in the sort of magic in those crystals found closer to the Alaran areas than those found further away. It is clear from the results that those found far from Alaris are much more pure, as if they no longer held any essence of any Alaran power that might have remained from the Triumvirate.

The Alaran gods are very different from ours, as is their magic. The device separated at least four types of magic from various samples. Of course in all of them there is a great amount of the power of Fear. And in the crystals found near the Sepulcher and in the air sample you took there, there is a trace of the Triumvirate. These are both powers that I can identify from other items. But there are two sources of magic that I don't recognize.

One is strongest in the areas that we have recently discovered, in both crystals and the Alarans here. It defies identification in a way that I can't understand. It's as if the magic itself is hard to pin down. I know it's there, but I can't identify its nature. The final type of magic we found is in all the crystals. It's completely foreign. The only way I can describe it is as some sort of ethereal magical presence. These are mysteries that we hope to one day understand.

Ive recently returned to EQ and I'm doing the quests and missions now. My 3 characters are level 97, SK/SHM/WIZ. I did this one to get finish the achievement to receive the aug. In case there's anyone that needs to know, this quest is as easy as they get. I started and finished this quest today in about 30 minutes time using the information here. All the items needed are either ground spawn or looted except for step 7, that's handed to you by the magus. I got all my alaran flesh from the overseers in the arena.

You start at indifferent faction with Crystal Circle Builders.
Step 1: Turn in 10 Small Glowing Fear Shard to Magus Burlshin at +50 faction each, gives you the required 500 faction (kindly).
Step 2: Doing this Shard Experiences task gives you +100 faction, total of 600. You will need 1 Small Glowing Fear Shard for one of the task steps.
Step 3: Turn in 28 more Small Glowing Fear Shard at +50 faction each, your total is now 2000 (max), which gets you the Crystal Circle Builder achievement.

The content of steps 5 and 7 are reversed, but the names of the steps are correct. Step 5 requires one of the Small Glowing Fear Shards (as mentioned by Hakir). When you hail the Magus for step 6, he then hands you the shard to use for step 7.

Get a hold of any Fear Shard other than the "Small Glowing Fear Shard" you just used (any lower level Fear Shard should do).

At present, the Magus gives you a shard to analyze. There is no need to bring your own.

Used a Small Bright Fear Shard - confirmed to work at level 94
Clicked on box with success (shard on cursor) at /loc: 496, -238

Use the analyzer on the huge crystal in Shard's Landing. Stand over one of the beam supports to the giant crystal and click box. No need to stand over the canyon wall any more and slip down to zone out. Thats a nice feature glad we don't have to 'Ranger Gate' any more. 'Ranger Gate' = alone or solo in a bad spot with no way out , all options used and the only way out is to corpse. You could run for it, good luck to that. Smiley: clown

Wrong all that does is teleport u to another zone. I still had to fall almost halfway down to get the task update which does not need the box to be clicked. So what ever u thought u were doing when u clicked the box did nothing for this task point. Someone else in your group can compete this for u if u are near by trying other things like clicking the box.

This quest awarded me
1) 7% Regular Experience at level 96...very nice!
2) 4 or 5 AA's, sorry forgot exact amount
3) Charm of the Crystal circle

Chunk of Alaran Flesh is Pre-Lootable . I found one on abandoned corpse in church area and looted well before ever having the quest, because I had heard several people complaining about its rarity.


Confirmed: for step "Analyze one of the crystal shards found in older locations", I used a Petite Dark Fear Shard (looted as drop in Feerott, the Dream). Shard is consumed when analyzer is clicked on.

I have tried a number of other fear shards from other locations. I cannot make this step work. I did not use the "Small Glowing Fear Shard" Any advice?

As of evening 12/13/12, The ground spawn shard seems to be a fixed point 617.63, -328.00, 5.21.
The Alaran flesh dropped from Arena Overseers (2/2) and Silent Hall Clergymen (1/1) Faction hits are significant
I am now Warmly with Conscripted, and Threateningly with the Loyalists which include all guards and wards.

Bugs fixed my butt. C'mon SOE There are many of us that have playing the game for YEARS and spent a ton money How about you stop telling us it is fixed when in essence it is not. I spent $180, 00 on this expansion, and it is the same salami ( although I like Salami) that we have to pay a temendous price for an add on expansion and a new member joining the EQ family pays approx. the same price and get's the entire game. It is the same crap every expansion..... I adore this game it has rehabilitated me after I had a double stroke in 2001, ...and NO I am not going to stop playing because I am stating my opinion... one of the few rights we have left... but this is not a potitical discussion. this is an ethical situation that veteran player's are consistantly flaming about. We pay continually a premium dollar for one expac while Joe Snuffy pay's the same price and gets the entire game.

Now lettuce get to the heart of the matter....BUGS ! I do not have alot of computer experience, I hit the on button it comes on ....WOOT...I hit the on button and nothing happens, thankfully I have a programmer friend that owns his own PC store and he link up with my PC and fixes my problem.... I am blessed. We (SOE) have had bugs out the kazoo in game and a large % have been fixed so the techs deserve the respect that they have earned. But to push an Expac out the door and put it on the market, with having the slightest insight that there may be a problem is not good from my view. Shows me all ya want is the proceeds and the EQ addict's (including) myself buy it anyway. Then a HotFix is conducted,,,,doen't fix problem....so a patch (4 hours) is conducted and not one darn thing is mentioned about the Shard Experience Mission..... AT ALL... which was supposedly was the reason for the patch.

I went back thru all the news about VOA and nothing was ever mentioned of an additional mission to claim one of 4 rewards. I did the pre-launch task where you turned in 20 shards and on the 21st shard turn in (it stated "your faction with the Crystal Builder's could not possibly get any better) which meant I was Max ALLY with the Builder's. I understand during BETA and the EULA... and the non release of information in respect to the expansion, but I was under the impression my reward was secured. Now a vast majority of my raiding alliance are level 98 and higher and I am still sitting at 96 due to wasting my time in trying to get my 2 boxes their reward. Mr, Smeedly thanks for giving us triple station cash on December 21..... when the game was launched on November 28th.... peeps went ape over the bags coming back and I know many players that bought them only to get the crap end of the stick when the announcment was made for triple cash..... I am glad I waited !

Step 1 - Explore the Creavasse where the enormous crystal is lodged.
Make sure you have the Magical Analyzer on you, drop down the fissure (Sepulcher zone) in the center of the crater in Shard's Landing will give you the update. It is easier with Levitate on, but you will fall on the center pillar in a large room. This seems to be a safe spot if you dont move to much. :)

Step 2 - Test the air in the area where the Alaran Triumvirate died.
Click on the Magical Analyzer while in Sepulcher to test the air. Soloable

Step 3 - Test a fear shard from near the hole in Shard's Landing.
The fear shards are ground spawns near the center of the crater in Shard's Landing. If you have one when you did step 1 you can complete this while in Sepulcher. You take the fear shard on your cursor, then right click on the magical Analyzer. Gate/Throne/Clicky out of sepulcher if you complete it there. Soloable

Step 4 - Use the analyzer on the huge crystal in Shard's Landing.
Near the crystal in the center of the Crater, click the magical analyzer. Soloable

Step 5 - Analyze one of the crystal shards found in the newly revealed locations.
Take a small glowing fear shard (one of the dropped faction shards. It may have to be level appropriate for your character) on your cursor and right click the magical analyzer from anywhere. Soloable

Step 6 - Speak with Magus Burlshin about other crystals to analyze.
Magus Burlshin can be found in the SE area in Shards Landing around the translucent druid rings near the entrance to the zone. Around Loc - -1494, -1047, -7. Soloable.

Step 7 - Analyze one of the crystal shards found in older locations.
take a Petite Fear Shard (lower level shard) on your cursor and right click on the magical analyzer.

Step 8 - Analyze objects until you can find something that matches the magic the analyzer is now tuned to.
Go to the underground city and kill alarans till they drop flesh. Put it on your cursor and right click the analyzer.

must have a " small bright fear shard " i tried all other types and this one is the only one that worked. you can use it in the same location where you landed.

I know in Beta the chunk of alaran flesh was part of it, but we are all assuming that this is still the update needed. It may be something entirely different from the Alarans. Has anyone posted anything on the SOE boards to confirm that this quest is not able to be completed due to the lack of alaran flesh?

Just got the task last night and worked through to the 7th step. It reads "Analyze of of the crystal shards found in older locations. 0/1 (ALL)" I purchased a Meager Dark Fear Shard in the bazaar and click the analyzer and it worked. I suspect that any of the fear shards from zones before RoF launch will work for this.

The 8th step reads: Analyze objects until you can find something that matches the magic the analyzer is now tuned to 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

You'll need a Small Glowing Fear Shard (dropped by random Level 91+ mobs). With this on your cursor, right-click the analyzer.



I just picked up another Small Glowing Fear Shard near the big crystal in the middle and clicked and got the update. Didn't need dropped from a mob.

So managed to get 2 small fear shards from drops but I can't find the right spot to click the analyser with the shard on the curser. I need a loc or perhaps this part is broken too. I've also heard the chunk of flesh isn't dropping either.

Working now after patch it seems. I used a lvl 91 fear shard ground spawn (small bright fear shard) for update.

I have also tried this with several types of Fear Shards and cannot get this step to update.

Things I have tried placing on the cursor before right-clicking the box:
-Small Fear Shard (ground spawn)
-Small Fear Shard (loot drop)
-Petite Dark Fear Shard
-Petite Fear Shard
-Meager Fear Shard

Is anyone able to shed some light on how to get past this step? Clearly, I am missing something obvious, unless this is just bugged...

Edit: In order: I clicked the ground spawns, and then the Small Glowing Fear Shard, followed by the ones I tried above. Apologies for any I have confused, I just did not read the right step lol

This step: "Analyze one of the crystal shards found in the newly revealed locations 0/1 (Shard's Landing) " requires a Small Glowing Fear Shard to update

I picked up a small fear shard a ittle north of the crater and right clicked on the analyzer right there and it worked. Now I am just stuck on the Alaran flesh part.

Fall into the crevasse at the very south end. if your a monk or other FD class hit it soon as you zone in..i landed on the top of the temple/pyramid both times i fell in and you can check the air right there on the top, then zone out.

I tried this with mage invis and 5 mobs agroed and killed me before i could click - so if your not FD class dont try far south
