Medium Gears #2 and #3 dropped the most frequently from Ry'Gor Miners and Watchmen near the zone-in point.
Medium Gear #1 and Medium Rod dropped from Tentacle Terrors near the spiders. The spiders all wanted to gang up on me and swarmed me a few times.
Everything runs at 20% and my pet at this level was a liability. As usual, I had healing, clarity, and haste potions on me as well as cleric buff Temperance and shaman buff Harnessing of Spirit.
I was able to solo this as a level 40 Shadow Knight. As I had been wearing an Othmir Fur Cap, the helm was an upgrade for me.

Find James the Watchmaker in the Plane of Knowledge next to the Halas stone.
He offers a task for each one of the hotzones introduced in the April 18, 2007 patch (listed here for reference). You say, 'Hail, James the Watchmaker' James the Watchmaker says, 'Hello there _____! Do you happen to have the [time]?' You say, 'The time?' James the Watchmaker says, 'Yes, the time of day. You see I usually keep a number of watches with me at all times so I always know what time it is but I recently [lost], well, all of them.' You say, 'How were they lost?' James the Watchmaker says, 'I lost them when I was travelling last week. I wanted to visit some of the places in Norrath that were special to me but I seemed to run into trouble everywhere I visited! And wouldn't you know it but everytime I stopped for a bit I managed to lose one of my [watches]!' You say, 'Watches?' James the Watchmaker says, 'That's what I said, watches! Are you hard of hearing? I don't suppose you would like to [look] for my watches? I hate not knowing what time it is! I'm sure I could find something in my backpack to interest you if you found one of my watches!' You say, 'I will look for them' This brings up a quest selector with several quests: One for each hotzone ranging from 20 to 65. Each has a very original name of: "Help me repair my watch! (Level X)", where X is between 20 and 65, in multiples of 5. The task for 30th level: Deliver 1 Medium Gear #1 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Medium Reinforced Rod to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Medium Gear #2 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Medium Gear #3 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge These gears are dropped randomly in the Crystal Caverns. Is this right the AC for the hybrid is the lowest of them?

no, int caster has 8ac
I got the drops off the orcs, the terrors, the spiders, and the stone guys. Seems gear #2 was the most common drop.
