The quest begins in The Gulf of Gunthak. Talk to An Impassive Sea Spirit located about (pos)600, (neg)300 under a broken ship hull.

"You say, 'Hail, an impassive sea spirit'"

"An impassive sea spirit sways back and forth, rocking with the gentle motions of the tide. You are nearly mesmerized by its periodic fluctuation, when it suddenly speaks, 'I watch you as you watch me, and I wonder. Do you realize how to become empty of wishes, of dreams, of hope and sorrow? What do you know, strange one, about the virtue of null emotion? Do you understand how to be as unwavering as the ocean itself? Can you envision yourself as the pebble in the river? Can you mute feeling? Do you [dare to learn]?'"

"You say, 'I dare to learn.'"

"An impassive sea spirit says, 'We will see, Dreamhunter, we will see. If you are a willing pupil then demonstrate that you have begun to comprehend. Bring me something empty that previously numbed feeling and therefore brought emptiness to its possessor. You should not have to travel far.'"

Go to Dulak's Harbor. In the first row of houses to the right as you enter the zone, a Drunken Pirate spawns. Singling him out may be a little difficult. What I did is I went behind the second and third house, in the little growe in the wall and pulled there. The street infront the houses is patroled and the mobs will add if you pull as the patrolman passes. The best way to do it is to forget the pet, invisible yourself, find a drunken pirate in one of the houses, target him, go outside and cast a spell - yes you can cast through a wall here.

The item that you need to get from the pirate is:

Empty Flask
LORE ITEM NO DROP
Wt: 0.5 Size: MEDIUM
Class: SHM
Race: None
Identifies as: Item Lore: Smells faintly of Rum.

The pirates also drop a "Broken Bottle" which is not the one that you need (identifies as: Item Lore: Smells of wine.)

Once you acquired the empty flask, return to the impassive sea spirit in Gunthak. Make sure that you have an empty slot in your inventory, since the item that he gives you upon turning the empty bottle in will not fit in any container.
Handing him the empty flask results with:

"An impassive sea spirit says, 'Well done, strange one. Your perception is admirable.' The spirit hands you an incredibly heavy rock. 'Can you, Dreamhunter, be as [impassive as the sea]?'"

(You get)
A Large Rock
LORE ITEM NO DROP
Wt: 25.4 Size: GIANT
Class: SHM
Race: None
Identifies as: Item Lore: A Large Rock.

"You say, 'I can be as impassive as the sea.'"

"An impassive sea spirit removes his gaze from the ocean and looks at you, 'Perhaps you can be, but I require proof. If you can defeat the smallest elements of the ocean I shall reward you. Hand me their essences and I shall know you have completed the task. When you are ready to challenge them hand me back that rock.'"

Handing him the rock back will spawn "flotsam" and "jetsam," a pair of level 36 water elementals. They spawn near the entrance to the hull and you need to kill them and loot their dropsl; "flotsam" drops a Small Piece of Flotsam and "jetsam" drops a Small Piece of Jetsam.

An impassive sea spirit melds with the murky ocean water, and two elements of the sea appear.

Handing the two pieces to the impassive spirit results with:

"Now you comprehend. This is the way things are, and the way they have always been. Your acceptance of these truths proves your worthiness."

You get the scroll: Spell: Stoicism
Rewards:

This quest CAN be MQ'ed ...... but, only by another shaman. The sea spirit will not talk to non-shammys. I hv MQ'ed 3 times already for 500p each time. What you hv to do is get a flask, do the turn and re - turn in, kill Flotsam and Jetsam, and just let the buyer loot their corpses. They hail(very important) the impaasive spirit and turn-in the pieces. Voila! Its just that easy. So, if u spend a lot of time in Dulak, it doesn't hurt to grab one of these if someone /ooc's a rotting flask. Money in the bank. BTW, this spell rocks for shammys. Makes soloin a heck of a lot easier. Cuts grp downtime immensely. W/ regen and a mount, you can become a mana battery.

Root flotsam and jetsam

I did the quest solo at level 48, but had to do it twice. Everything worked as stated in these posts, but as i was killing the last mob (flotsam or jetsam, don't remember which) he bolted before i could recast root on him. Went much faster than me, and got far enough away that even though my dot killed him, i couldn't find the body to loot. Make sure your root doesn't break when he's close to death.

Easy way to solo Drunken Pirates

I did this quest recently as a 50 Shaman and I soloed all the mobs. Another poster (somehwere, not in this forum) mentioned a specific spot to pull to, which is great. When you zone into Dulak from Gunthak, invis and hug the right wall until you see the water - you should be up against a low fence. This is your pull spot. HP buff and chloro, mem your best dots, slow, and root, and you're set. Do not summon a pet, or he will aggro too many mobs when attacking the pirates.

One pirate spawns in each of the five houses (one on the outside, actually). From your pull spot, invis, make sure no roaming guards are near you, and go inside the closest house and target the Drunken Pirate (DP). Now go back to the pull spot and cast Slow (it will work through walls and at great range in this zone, for some reason). You will not aggro any other mobs and the DP will come running. Root him, dot, and med til he breaks. They seem to break Root over 50% of the time, so be ready to re-root and move. I just keep hugging the wall - be careful of the two mobs behind the houses though.

Then repeat for the next closest house. I didn't pull from the middle house - seemed tricky. The DP outside the next house is easy - just wait for no roaming guards, slow him and run back to pull spot (he won't aggro any pirates in houses while running to meet you).

These were the only 3 I pulled, and I think they're on about a 20 minute timer. I killed the mobs behind the houses a couple times, and even though they're close together, they didn't assist each other. All the mobs here drop from 3-6pp, so it's not terrible. First night I killed about 12 DPs and no Empty Flask dropped. Next night I logged in (just camped in the pull spot - it's safe) and the Flask dropped on the first mob. So I don't think it's as rare as people are claiming, but it's certainly not common.

Got invited to a group headed for Dulak and asked if they could kill the pirates for my quest. They didn't mind at all, but one member said that it would take 2 weeks killing them before an empty flask would drop, since they are so rare.

We cleared the zone-in a few times to figure out the spawn time and the cleric casted soothe on mobs around the first building to the right. After clearing the house area twice, a drunken pirate spawned outside the door of the second house. We pulled it and got two drunken pirates. They died much faster than other mobs. A little faster than the scouts. The first wielded a broken bottle and dropped a broken bottle. The second wielded a Shiv (dagger) and dropped the empty flask which I was allowed to loot.

XPed with the group until it split. I gated and ran back to Gunthak. Fully buffed myself (including EB and Lev) and sold a backpack to make a general inv slot. Went to the loc and found the spirit in a sunken ship. Hailed it, said "I dare to learn", and handed him the flask. Got the rock on my cursor and gave it back to him. Turned around and saw jetsam and flotsam.

Made a pet, gave it haste. Med to get a little mana back and rooted one to check if the other would add. I slowed it, incap'ed it, DoT'ed it with VoS, and made my pet attack it. I ran up to tank it and he was really wimpy. Hit for 96-98 max, but didn't double a lot and missed quite a bit. Feeling very confident, I slowed the other right away and melee'd him to death with my pet.

Turned in the items I got from them to the spirit and got the spell on my cursor. The scroll was no drop and lore.

The Dulak part is the hard part... getting the empty flask. I doubt I could have pulled the pirates and handle the adds I got with them without help.

The turn-in part is easy. I'm not twinked at all and was able to tank flotsam and jetsam with no problem. I have only 141 defense with 604 AC self-buffed.

You shouldn't need an open inventory slot, since the items he gives your appears on your cursor. I also made sure that I had no pet up for any turn-ins, so I don't know if it's still bugged.

Hope this helps!

I completed this quest with my little shammy, but took the cheap route and had help from a 65 Paladin.

We spent 2 1/2 hours killing Drunken Pirates in Dulak's Harbor, where the mob's were dark blue to me, agroed a whole lot, and would've drained my mana had I tried killing these guys by myself.
I don't think it is possible to determine what the Pirate will drop by what he is holding.

Lots of swimming and running is involved in the travel between these mob's and turn-in's. My advice* get your swimming up, have an EB item/fish scales with you, have invis up, and just have patience. I love this spell now that I have it and think it is very worth the couple hours it took me.
Just completed

I just finished the quest this morning, taking about 2 hours total with my 47th Shaman. I want to thank everyone for your advice posted here, it proved invaluable. For me the Empty Falsk dropped off my 5th pirate.

One question though: I noticed that some of the "a drunken pirate"s are armed with a shiv and some are armed with a broken bottle. Now the no drop flask dropped off of "a drunken pirate" armed with a broken bottle. Does the weapon armed indicate the which MoB will drop the "empty Flask"
Pet

I did the flask part of it duo with a rogue, this too maybe 2 or 3 hours.

The impassive sea spirit hand-in and fight with flotsam and jetsam were much easier than I expected. At level 45 with no kei, I simply pulled the right one to me with a slow, then incapacitated and venom of snake. it fell leaving me with 85%hp and 80%mana.
Next one was another easy pull, but since I had so much mana I just nuked it a few times.

I kept my pet up for the hand in, but had already set him to guard near where the sea spirits spawned, so no problems with any hand-ins.

The spell is great! nice spell effects(lol) and hugely useful for getting back mana, and even for healing in group situations.

If only I hadn't messed up my canni2 spell quest... hehe

I see that you are on FV. I am too, if I could somehow get someone to do this quest for me, is it no dorp on our server? could someone do it, and give it to me? I haven't seen any for sale in Bazaar, so my guess is no, but then again, I haven't seen any malo or torpor or quiessence either. I don;t have LoY, that's why I'm curious. I guess the spell would be worth it to buy, but I hate buying an expansion for one spell ya know? hehe

I just got Stoicism last night. It probably took me about 45 mins to an hour, and was worth the time. You can massively Cannibalize yourself, then cast this it and bam you're back in business.
The hardest part for me was getting the flask. I got it off my third pirate, which may have been lucky, but i also i had to run to the zone about three times from adds. I did just what it says and Invised, targeted, then Slowed from behind the houses by a Still, no pet. Pirates hit pretty hard for a light blue and one resisted Turgur's about four times.
Flotsam and Jetsam were nothing. Turned in the flask, then the rock, then made a pet. After i dropped them, i got rid of the doggie to avoid any accidental turn-ins to him. Worked like a charm. Not that i know how a Charm works since I still don't have one!

Park Your Pet!!!!
# Apr 08 2003 at 9:03 AM Rating: Decent
I just did the quest, returned the stone and Voila, no MoBs spawned!! Okay, this is a common theme here! As was posted below (/bonk me for reading it after the fact), it is EASIER to target the pet at your feet than the impassive sea spirit. I was mifted last night when the quest didn't work, but now I suspect that my ever so loyal doggie ate my quest piece. Someone else said, "having a pet bugs the quest". I bet this is the same issue. PARK YOUR PET just outside the broken hull of the ship, which is where the MoBs spawn, and out of "Turn in Range".

Few things to add
# Apr 04 2003 at 3:31 PM Rating: Excellent
First to apologize for few spelling errors in the walkthrough above – it was quite late and English is not my native language :).

Now to note few things:

- I DID have a pet up when I turned the bottle and the stone, though it is easy to give the item to your pet since the Impassive Sea Spirit is very small.

- Flotsam and Jetsam did not agro until attacked.

- I think this quest is doable by level 44 and above solo. Just make sure you use the tactics with invisibility noted above and pull with slow - as Fedarov noted below.

- Sometimes the pirate would spawn in the last house near the docks. Since sometime there are MOBs behind the 3rd and 4th houses that can add, you can pull the pirate behind the fifth house all the way in the corner of the dock.

- Getting the Empty Flask does take some time – it is very rare drop.

- After getting this spell, I broke my KEI addiction ;). I am never OOM.

Hope that helps.

solo?
# Apr 03 2003 at 11:55 PM Rating: Default
is this quest soloable at lvl 47? or should i wait for 49 or 50 for pet and maybe pet haste?
Definatly read this quest
# Apr 02 2003 at 8:20 PM Rating: Default
Do NOT do this quest without reading EVERY word. First, DO use the tip about no pet and using invis, it works! Second, do NOT have a pet cast during any turnin, that bugs the quest. I had to start over because the elemental ate the rock and no other elementals popped.

Ok here's the G-2 on this quest. Kill drunken pirates in Dulak, in the houses on the southwest side of the zone. Once you loot the empty flask, head back to Gunthak, to around 615, -212.

Make sure that you DO NOT have a pet summonned. Always hail the impassive sea spirit before each turni in. After you hand him the flask he gives you a rock. Hand him the rock after you have buffed yourself, but prior to summoning your pet.

Remember to hail him prior to giving him the rock. Once you give him the rock, Flotsam and Jetsam spawn. Now you can summon your pet, HoS and haste, and then single pull with slow.

Why wait till they spawn to summon pet you ask? Because I tried the quest a few times, with no success. After a GM responded to my petition, he checked the logs and saw that my pet was getting the items each time. The pet was parked at the spawn point for the elementals each time, and each time the trade window had the sea spirit's name in it.

I was lucky enough to have my items returned to me, and completed the quest easily. Hope this helps ease any frustration.

OK just did this quest last night for my shaman and you can have your pet up when handing into the sea spirit (I summoned pet and buffed BEFORE handing back the rock) just make sure that when giving the rock back it is definately the sea spirit you have targeted and NOT your pet (this seems to be a common mistake people have made as the spirit is so small).

Also found that pulling the drunken pirates to behind the huts rather than to the boxes/barrels outside the building opposite the huts is easier as you do not get any wandering mobs adding. Just run into hut with invis up and target a drunken pirate, run back behind huts (there are a couple of mobs standing in an indent between the 4 and 5th huts there is another indent between the 2nd and 3rd house with no mobs thats where you want to be) and pull with slow (no line of sight issues).
