I am a Bar. Shaman working on faction with these knights. I am finding the best way is to make a trip to the WARRENS. Kill gnolls and gather their molars. They drop approx. every 5th kill. However, not every gnoll-type will drops so look up the info before you go...or just figure it out when you get there.
Hand in the molars to Tiam Khonsir, a knight located in the Deepwater guild. He will not con you dubiously, but that is ok. Just hand molar to him..one at a time mind you...and watch the rewards. This is also called the molar quest which you can look up. Nice faction(w Deepwater and others), cash, and sometimes ringmail.
I have handed in approx. 24-32 molars and faction is good enough to start obtaining quest.

I have had the pieces forever and am raising my faction right now its amamible but im working on it. I have killed the necro by the docks about 20 times 8 young sharks and the pearl quest 3 times and that got me from dubious to amiable but i cant get the quest. So does anyone know whether i need kindly or warmly.
I did this quest LONG ago, but I'm pretty sure you have to be high-amiable to get the quest started (you DID know there were invisible levels within factions, right ??? ;-)). The long and short of it is: if you are currently low-amiable, you're very close. Go whack the Necro out in Toxx a few more times, or make one more molar-hunt into The Warrens, an you should be all set.

I cant believe that. How ironic that i have killed Elail Brook 20 times and 8 young sharks and done the pearl 3 times. I will try this week to get the faction. I feel maybe the pearl quest and killing Elail 3 more times should just about get me kindly and i will update it here.

I'm thinking of doing this quest with my ranger (almost level 11) just cause i like the look of the breastplate (lets face it, stats suck), but how hard is it to get that shark? are there likely going to be alot of people waiting to kill the sucker? I usually play at odd hours (midnight-2am central, or 11am-1pm central).

I went to do the quest and despite the fact i am a good ranger follow of Karana who has killed many evil and no good creatures, the Erudien Paladins don't like me enough to give me the quest. They actually con 'dubiously' to me, which is like the lowest rating ou can get w/o being KoS... I just forgot the whole idea. I'll just buy the sucker, easier then fighting dozens of kobolds to get the faction i need to do this (i rolled 28 of them and a couple heretics and still wasn't gettin the quest).

You dont get Deepwater faction by killing kobolds only Elail Brook and heretic prophets.

What's the minimum faction with the Deepwater Knights to get the Barnacle Breastplate quest??? Mine is amiable but he won't yet give me the quest. Annoying since I already have all of the items...
UPDATE - killed the necro out by the Toxx docks 8 times (6 minute spawn, didnt even break a sweat at 17th...) and then got the quest and the BB.
Was near the docks killing sharks for XP, saw/killed the Diseased shark 2 more times. Spawn time were random intervals i'd say. The first was a huge wait (1.5 hours or so), the second was probably <15 minutes after. The sharks are not placeholders, since I was mid-fight with one when the Diseased joined in.

Is the shark rare or am i just looking in the wrong place? all i've been finding are sharks and sand sharks
As Oppe mentioned, the regular shark appears to be a placeholder for the diseased one: if the regular shark is around, you won't find the diseased shark.
What I did was to spend my time hunting thieves and pearls for other Deepwater Knight quests, and just check on the regular shark each time I was nearby.
When I saw the regular shark was missing, I went after the diseased shark. I spent maybe an hour or two hunting thieves and pearls, and running back and forth on errands, etc. before I finally saw the diseased one. (No idea if this is a typical time to wait.) Depending on your level, you could try killing the regular shark to see if that speeds up the appearance of the diseased one.
The ordinary shark just seems to sit in one place, in the slip of water near the path leading down to the water's edge. When I found the diseased shark, it was further out: near the dock where you catch the ferry boat.
After I killed the diseased shark, the young sharks just stayed put; I had plenty of time to stay on the shore healing and medding before jumping in to finish them off.
The ordinary shark /conned yellow or red to me at level 12; the diseased one was blue, and the young sharks were all green.

The Diseased Shark conned even to my paladin at level ten. I was able to finish it off, once a friendly druid buffed me a bit.

ok, you guys are wasting to much time, My 22 Druid went to do it for my Cleric and (even tho he didnt have the faction) he got ALL the components in about 10 minutes. the diseased shark was allrdy there when i got there. when i killed him he had approximately 200HP or less (i killed him with 2 spells- DD-112pnts DD-97points)
as soon as he is dead the young sharks drop out of him, about 7 or so that i killed with a DD-112. then i got jumped by about 2 sharks, whenever they were dead the diseased popped right again, so basically the only faction u get while doing it without handing it in is with the little sharks, not the diseased, but im not sure about the rest of the quest. if you need any help gimme a tell.

The diseased shark usually spawns to the left of the dock, although he looks to swim to the same spot where the shark and swimming guard can be found. My guess is that the regular sharks are the placeholders for the diseased.
Killing the diseased shark gives no faction, but he does have a lore shark skin. Several young sharks will immediately spawn. Kill these to get the no-drop "Baby Shark Remains." Killing the babies gives:
-Heretics, +DeepwaterKinghts, +GateCallers, +Craftkeepers, +CrimsonHands
Turning in the combined bag will get you the breastplate and the following:
+DeepwaterKnights, +HighCouncilofErudin, -Heretics
