I went to Western Wastes the other day to get the furs needed for the Crown of Deceit quest. I was a 70 pally at the time, so I did it without tracking.
First, I went along the western shore, but only managed to stumble across a few mammoths.
I had much better luck finding mammoths in the SouthEast corner of the zone, near the zone wall. I killed several mammoths within a small area in a small time, so you might want to try that area first.
I killed 11 mammoths. The 4 furs that I needed dropped on kills 2, 6, 9, & 10.
I was killing these for 6 hours tonite. It seems they are random spawns. The hounds and the rhinos (named something else) are from the same spawn points. They drop a pelt about 1 outta 20-25 kills. I was killing at the entrance to Sirens Grotto.
I suppose its almost pointless to ask about the zone and the mobs, since I usually go there before its answered. I am concerned about the 'lots o' dragons...' and all the roaming mobs. Given there is about a 25% chance to get the pelt... the price must be due to risk and rare mobs? I hope not :)
1. The zone is a pain to get to- you'll need to succor across SG or take a big risk to get through. 2. Lots of dragons here so if dragons dont like you your toast 3. Velium hounds like to add 4. You need tracking to find stuff 5. People just dont do it too often

I Plan On Trying To Duo These With A 52 SK (me) And A 52 Necro. Only Thing Is Should I Try And Make Cloak With The Skill I Have Now, 138, Or Wait Till Im Higher?
I have been camping these things for the wood elf crown, and it seems to me that they all for some reason go extinct, i was wondering if anyone knew of a Placeholder they might have?
dunno anon i just 'hang out' in ww sometimes in fact i notice jarnin is a wizard as well as i am and he can in fact do alot of soloing here. i find this to be a good exp zone as it's usually close to empty except for people passing through to raid DN or tov.... if you think WW is too uber to hang out in then maybe jarnin isn't the one that's a noob.... It's a 50+ version of north karana ffs with the exception of the dragons wich you can safely ignore with a couple hours of faction work
Yes they do and they sell for 1000k and they drop frequently. I have killed a lot of these. And it seems that they drop in a 1-4 ratio. Sometimes with luck you can play for a day, kill 20 and get 12 furs. It mainly planes out to be 1-4 though. Very easy mob, very slow no problem at all for anything you can charm in this zone, or even another class that cant charm. But i dont want WW flooded on my server...so SHHH dont tell anyone =P
Easily soloable by a 53rd level druid ... the problem for me was not the dragons (amiable in wolf-form), it was the velium hounds which will suddenly spawn on you, hit hard, have a large aggro radius, and run fast enough to hit you before you can get them snared.
i could almost solo one of these at 52, but i was kos to CoV at the time and ended up getting beaten up pretty good by the cragwyrms. i had a group inside SG so they came and helped finish it off. I tried these again @ 56 ally to CoV and it goes much smoother and i can solo these easy as long as a velium hound doesnt wander by (these are mean fookers for those who dont know)
Yes, just snare / fear them, make sure of your surroundings because of the agro radious of the velium hounds, and panic animal about every 12-15 seconds. As ranger we may not have a crap load of HP, but tactically we are the smarter of the lot!

As long as your good with CoV, you CAN hang out in this zone. the only mobs that aggro are Velium Hounds and the Ice Burrowers(I did see this weird air elemental dude that was DB to me and coned ready to attack). and after 52 or so as a class that can fear animals(or other mobs) you would be fine. The Main thing is CoV faction. If the dragons don't like you, your screwed as there are wandering mobs EVERYWHERE!!! Good Hunting still good xp for me at 58
Do these drop mammoth meat? Just wondering, for those of us that cook, it seems these would be good exp and also provide food while I'm hanging out in WW.
