I hunted these for the Make Poison trophy recently, and there is a really easy way to spawn them. The scorpions (giant, large, etc.) in the zone go in cycles. Take a character that can track and kill a round of them until there are none up, and then go over to the spot in the zone where the Burynai spawn. Kill those until the heartsting scorpions start to pop close to you. Evidently they are close in level to the Burynai and will spawn among them, but they do not among the lower level mobs in others parts of the zone.
I need the heartsting venom sacks to make Stiffening Ergot (a very good poison) for my 65 Rogue. I figured the fastest way to farm it would be to take my 65 Druid. Here's what I found from spending an hour and a half today (and two hours the previous day).
Q. Where is the best spot to hunt them? I have found the yard and hillside across from Kurn's Tower has the most. It's East of the tower. Outside of the pit. Some do spawn in the pit but too few to bother clearing out that area.
Q. What's the most efficient way of spawning them? I found that tracking down the heartsting scorpions and killing them all, then start gathering up everything else and AE'ing (Catastrophe) helped them respawn fastest. It seems like everything are PHs for each other in the field.
Q. How often do they spawn? Using the above method (with no sit down time), I spawned 52 Heartsting Scorpions in 90 minutes.
Q. How often does the Heartsting venom sacks drop? Out of 52 spawns, 10 venoms dropped. It averaged 1 in 5, which bites worse than the scorpion. :P
Q. How hard do they hit? A. Like 24 damage max if it's lucky enough to hit you.
Q. What level does it stop aggroing? A. It doesn't. It will aggro you even at level 65.
Q. Do the Large Heartsting Scorpions drop the venom? A. NO! In that same time that 52 regulars spawned, 17 Large ones spawned. 3 dropped "scorpion chitin" which is lore/no drop and never anything else. Hunting the previous day nothing else dropped off them either.
Q. How often does the meat/stingers drop? A. They don't as far as I'm concerned. Out of two days of hunting, neither the regular or large varieties dropped either of those items so they should be taken off of the loot list for them.
Q. Anything else drop? A. They drop a 3/24 pokie weapon that's lore/no drop. There are no charges on it at all like some of the older posts are saying so maybe it was nerfed.
Q. Any other clues on how to get more? A. You can check in the bazaar but I've never seen any for sale. Most races are KOS to the merchants in the field of bone so I recommend making an iksar and checking the merchants. Not a lot of newbies hunt there anymore but you may get lucky and find some.
My 18th. Level Ranger was jumped by one of these last night in the Pit. With dual wield and having just recast my self buffs this thing went down in under a minute.
Group of 5 got killed by this thing. 3 level 6 necro and 2 level 7 monks got the hell beat outta us. He resists everything we threw at him, Lifetapp, Darkness, Disease. Got our butts smoked.
These things agro me at 21 ... then again some still show up yellow?
I learned fast never to solo more than 2 at a time and NEVER go into the dry basin without SOW, preferably camoed, full mana, and a quick escape.
There were maybe 6 people soloing this one little area that was festering with 'Sting Scorps and Scarabs and bout all of us were getting whomped. When I say festering, visual range such that I could see the whites of their eyes and we were each being swarmed by no less than 2 Heart stings and a scarab..... maybe I just came after the birthing season.
If you plan to solo these don't do it in the basin, do it just outside when the scorps filter outwards
I just wanted to correct the person who said if you use a telson on a scorpian it will drop a telson without a charge. This is untrue, I have countless times recieved a charged telson after using the telson on that same MOB.
True as a main weapon it stinks but from lv 12 to lv 16 i hunted them non-stop, get the telson and cast it gives you an extra 40dmg to the mob which at those levels is quite nice. Also makes NooB confused when they see a monk cast a spell.
sure its a schitte weapon but the 1 charge of poison bolt is a nice when you are trying to pull scorpions out of, say, a pile of those mean doggies or skeles. and its noticable damage when used on the scorpions too. one thing i have noticed is that if you cast the charge on a heartsting, kill him and get another telsion, it never has a charge. ive done this damn near 10-15 times and every time i get an un-charged telsion. sometimes you get an un-charged one anyway but i have never gotten a charged on after using a charge on a scorpion. anyone else seen that or am i just one unlucky SoB?
The cool thing about the Teslon is, as I monk I can't eqip it as a weapon. But if I keep one in my inventory that has posion bolt in the stats(not all do) then I can right click tap on it and it will cast a poison bolt spell on them one time and then disappears. Great for pulling too.
I forget what it was called, but a Heartsting dropped some piercing weapon that was like 3/24, and expendable with one charge of the L4 necro spell Poison Bolt.
